• Must be open to all

• By mail or electronic

• Bylaws need to be consistent

• Biographies of candidates prepared and vetted

• Succession plan helps here

•Every member needs opportunity to vote

•Use personal contact to identify candidates – Emails, general notices don’t work well!

•Turnout is not always sterling!

•Multiple candidates – careful to avoid friction

• Constitute a nominating committee

• Committee needs to be consistent with your section bylaws

• Select those who have a knowledge/feel for section and its people

• Consult former officers to see who might be desirable candidates for office

• Important to select doers, not just bodies

Fall Kick-off

• Plan a “Welcome Back” Event

– Include students/faculty returning to school

– Provide pizza or snacks

– Talk about upcoming events (fall speakers, NCW)

– Ask attendees what upcoming events they would like to have

– Ask for volunteers to do specific tasks/events

Transition Planning

• Make sure chair-elect is prepared for role as chair

• Current chair needs to spend time and coach chair-elect

• Plan attendance for 2013 Leadership Institute

– Critical for chair-elect to attend

– Consider sending additional representative(s)

– January 25-27, 2013 in Dallas, TX

Invite 2013 Speakers

• Review Online Speaker Directory for possible speakers

• Invite speakers for spring 2013 events – local is cheaper

• Types of talks

– Technical

– Popular science

– General interest

– Science Cafe

• Post event calendar on section’s website

Planning National Chemistry Week

• Establish community partnerships

– Industry

– Local Universities, Colleges and High Schools

– Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts

– Fire, Police, Water Departments

• Identify a NCW and Public Relations Chair

• Get an early start on preparations

• Set up committees for different activities

Your 2012 Annual Report

• Get an early start on your section’s annual report – FORMS is great for this!

• Record activities as they occur throughout the year

• Event chairs and meeting moderators can write summaries in real time

• Compile lists of venues, menus, and people involved for future use

– 4-Hour Courses ($150 member/$300 non-member)

– 8-Hour Extraordinary Leaders course ($650 member/$800 non-member)
