LifeEnrichment
It’s that wonderful time of year! It’s time for fresh starts, andnothing is fresher than green
growing things. You don’t need alot of space or expertise to
begin. From a houseplant to avegetable patch, there’s some
kind of gardening withinanyone’s reach. Our garden areahas been tilled and is ready to bedesigned and planted. We have
tools and gloves in the largeplastic bin outside of the Cedar
Room on the patio. We have hadmuch success in years past withthe bounty of resident’s gardens. With two raised beds for those
not wishing to walk on theuneven yard out to the gardens, everyone is able to plant a salad, some herbs, peppers, or fruit of
their choice. We have lots of sun, water, and soil. A flower gardenfor cutting fresh blooms will bemade available for all residents.
Look for the “Green ThumbGarden Club” meeting on thecalendar. Ask Patti or Karen in
Life Enrichment if you havequestions and where you may
begin to “dig in”.

Relief From MigrainesWith Diet
Some foods may trigger migraines, some foods may prevent them. If
you’ve ever experienced a migraine, there is no doubting what it is. Thepain can be excruciating. Once the
pain is gone, many sufferers feeldrained. Migraines are distinguished
by moderate to severe pulsatingpain, usually on one side of the head.
Sufferers may experience nausea,
vomiting, visual disturbances, andsensitivity to light, sound and eventouch. Specific foods have been
suggested to be migraine triggersin up to 30% of people who suffer
from them. The most commontrigger foods and beverages
include chocolate, coffee, nuts, alcoholic beverages, milk, citrus
and cheese. Some foods may evenhave the power to keep migrainesat bay. Fatty fish, like salmon, arehigh in Omega 3s. Also a diet high
in folate, found in dark leafyvegetables and lentils, are effective
preventers. The best way to findout if you have a trigger food is tokeep a food diary, eliminating onefood at a time. If you suffer from
migraines and would like some helpwith putting together a food diary or
have questions about yourmigraines, stop into the wellness
center to talk with Diane, theWellness nurse.

Hip, Hip, Hooray for OurMoms & Dads!
In 1963, John F. Kennedy designatedthe month of May as “Senior CitizensMonth”. It is a time to acknowledge
older people for the contributions theyhave made to our country and familiesby recognizing older people for their
knowledge and insight as they createdthe foundation of our families. May isalso the month that we take the timeto appreciate our mothers. In today’sworld, moms are not only the womenwho gave birth to us, but they can be
the grandparents who for somereason have stepped up to raise theirgrandchild, the father who played the
role of both parents, or the aunts, uncles, and family friends who have
gladly taken on the role of a mother orfather in a child’s life. Families areunique and as I consider our family
here at Cedarlake, I would like to say,“Thank you and Happy Mother’s Day”to all our residents and staff who aremoms and dads or have taken on a“mom or dad” role in someone’s life.
