Drink Up!It’s National
Iced Tea MonthThe days are getting sunnier,
and summer is on its way: It’s theperfect season to enjoy a nice, tallglass of iced tea.
We may think of tea as arefreshing treat and nothing more, but the popular beverage holdsplenty of benefits.
Antioxidants. All teas made fromthe Camellia sinensis plant—whichincludes black, green, white andoolong teas—are high inantioxidants, which can rid yourbody of toxins and may helpprevent cancer. Home-brewediced tea has the highest levels, but even bottled teas contain justas many antioxidants as fruits likeblueberries and strawberries.Adding lemon or lime to your teaprovides even more antioxidants,as well as natural sweetness.
Other nutrients. A good source of
fluoride and disease-fightingflavonoids, an 8-ounce serving ofblack iced tea also provides between20 and 35 percent of the dailyrecommended amount ofmanganese, which helps maintainbone strength, heals wounds andsupports metabolism.
Hydration and cooling. Heat strokeand dehydration are importantconcerns during the summer, butdrinking unsweetened iced tea canhelp you stay cool.
Stress relief. A British study foundpeople who drank black tea hadlower levels of the stress hormonecortisol. So grab a glass, kick backand enjoy a relaxing summer!
