CRUISING!!
Detroit Princess Lunch Cruise
The Roots of Country MusicIt’s been called honky-tonk, hillbilly
and Western. Country music hasgone by many names since it wasborn and encompasses a varietyof styles.
Historians say country emerged asits own genre in 1927, when theCarter Family and Jimmie Rodgers—both from Bristol, Tenn.—recordedtheir first songs. In tunes like “Canthe Circle Be Unbroken,” the CarterFamily’s sound, known as “old-timemusic,” blended gospel, folk, bluesand mountain music. Rodgers, calledthe father of country music, was alsoinspired by blues and the Southern
folk tradition, but added thedistinctive vocal techniqueof yodeling.
In the following decades camenumerous subgenres, each with itsmemorable stars. Bluegrass hadBill Monroe and Earl Scruggs; GeneAutry and Roy Rogers found fameas Hollywood’s singing cowboys;and Ernest Tubb, Hank Williamsand Lefty Frizzell performedheartbreaking honky-tonk.Crooners like Eddy Arnold, JimReeves and Patsy Cline definedthe Nashville sound, while theBakersfield sound (Buck Owens,Merle Haggard) and outlaw country(Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings)offered grittier, edgier tunes.
Regardless of each new twistto the genre, country music hasstayed true to its roots of simplestorytelling and a heartfelt, authentic sound.
Country music emergedas a genre in 1927

Gateway to the WestOverlooking the Mississippi River
in St. Louis is the tallest monument inthe United States, the Gateway Arch.Completed on Oct. 28, 1965, the Archis the centerpiece of the JeffersonNational Expansion Memorial.
The memorial was dreamed up bySt. Louis civic leader Luther Ely Smith, who wanted to commemoratePresident Thomas Jefferson’s visionof westward expansion and theaccomplishments of early pioneers. Also known as the Gateway to theWest, the Arch is a symbol ofAmerica’s growth following theLouisiana Purchase and the Lewis andClark expedition.
Finnish-born architect EeroSaarinen designed the Arch, whichis made up of 142 stainless steelsections and stands 630 feet tall—more than twice the height of theStatue of Liberty. The Arch receivesabout 4 million visitors a year, andmany opt to ride one of two trams tothe top of the monument.
The Gateway Arch has housed theMuseum of Westward Expansion at itsbase since 1976. Plans are currentlyunderway to modernize the museumexhibits and expand the site’svisitor center.
