Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones on September 18,1851.

The first issue

"We publish today the first issue of the New-York Daily Times, and we intend to issue it every morning (Sundays excepted) for an indefinite number of years to come.“

The third largest local metropolitan newspaper after the Wall Street Journal and USA Today.

Its motto, created by A. Ochs in 1896, is printed in the upper-left hand corner of the paper and says: “All the News That's Fit to Print."

The newspaper was originally published every day except Sunday, but on April 21, 1861, due to the demand for daily coverage of the Civil War, The Times, along with other major dailies, started publishing Sunday issues.

Since then it has a

regular Sunday publication.

3 sections of the NYTimes:

1) Opinion which includes editorials, letters to the editor and Op-Eds (“opposite the editorial page” - opinion pieces by outside writers, placed on the page opposite the newspaper’s editorials – space previously reserved for obituaries.)

2) News which includes national, international news, business, health, sports, technology, science, etc.

3) Features which includes arts, travel, fashion & style, theatre, movies.

4) Sometimes a Metro section is included.

The New York Times company Nowadays the NYTimes

newspaper and magazine are owned by the NYTimes Company whose core purpose is to "enhance society by creating, collecting and distributing high-quality news, information and entertainment”.

Its chairman is Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. whose family has controlled the newspaper since 1896.

The Times remains the largest seven-day newspaper in the United States, with:

print circulation of 1.4 million Sunday and nearly 1 million daily in 2009

Audience and delivery The Times is delivered to more than 1,200 colleges

and universities and used by more than 1,500 schools in the United States.

The Times is the #1 national newspaper among college students.

It is delivered in bags made of recyclable plastic as it is the most effective approach to protect the paper against damage from inclement weather, morning dew, sprinkler systems and being thrown from a moving vehicle.

Care for people Each week, the NYTimes publishes the Large Type

Weekly, the only newspaper in America printed in large type for people with low vision. It offers a selected package of the week's news including articles, editorials and the NYTimes crossword puzzle.

The NYTimes's Newspaper in Education program offers discounted newspapers for classrooms as well as supplemental guides

for teachers.

1861, April 21- Responding to the thirst for Civil War news, major dailies, including The Times, start Sunday Issues.

1865, April 15 - Its front-page columns bordered in black, The Times reports the assassination of Lincoln.

1884, October - The Times casts off its reputation as a Republican newspaper when it endorses Grover Cleveland, a Democrat, for president.

1896, August 18 - Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of The Chattanooga Times, acquires controlling ownership of The Times for $75,000, nearly all of it borrowed. He installs himself as publisher. Circulation: 9,000.

1896, September 6 - An illustrated Sunday magazine begins, carrying the newspaper's first photographs.

1896, October 25 – Adolph S. Ochs creates a slogan for the newspaper: “All the News That’s Fit to Print”

1918, June 3 - The Times wins its first Pulitzer Prize, for public service in publishing the texts of dozens of official reports, documents and speeches about World War I.

1920, July 4 - Beginning an Independence Day tradition, The Times publishes a reproduction of the Declaration of Independence.

1937, February - The Times begins an editorial crusade, one of the most intensive in its history, against Franklin D. Roosevelt’s plan to pack the Supreme Court. "Though not fashioned by the hand of a dictator," it says, the plan "smacks of the dictator’s method.“

1948, June 20 -The Times introduces an international edition. It is produced in New York and airmailed to Paris for publication a day later.

Some historical facts

1964, March 9 - Supreme Court in the case called “NYTimes Co v. Sullivan” created a national rule, which revolutionized libel suits in the USA. Since 1964 it has become practically impossible for the public figures to sue any American newspaper for libel. It was one of the key decisions supporting the freedom of press.

1967, Spring - The Times discontinues its 19-year-old international edition and joins with the owners of the defunct Herald Tribune and The Washington Post to publish The International Herald Tribune in Paris.

Some historical facts

1971 - the New York Times and the Washington Post published “The Pentagon Papers”, a classified US Defence document about the US role in Vietnam War. Pentagon brought the issue to the Supreme Court, claiming that the papers had gone too far. The Court, however, ruled against Pentagon.

1980, August 18 - The Times begins publishing a national edition.

1996, January 19 - The Times on the Web – www.nytimes.com – goes online, giving readers anywhere in the world access to the newspaper's articles and pictures on the night of publication.

1997, October 16 - The first color photograph on the front page appeared.

The New York Times magazine The NYT magazine is a

supplement to the NYTimes newspaper Sunday issue.

It was first published on September, 6, 1896 and carried the newspaper's first photographs.

The New York Times magazine From the time of its creation the magazine covered

those elements that were not included into the NYTimes newspaper: fiction, gossip columns, photographs.

Nowadays it focuses on everything from politics to social matters, art to entertainment.

The New York Times magazine In 1979 the magazine began publishing a column

discussing issues of English grammar, use and etymology.

In 2004 the NYTimes Magazine began publishing an entire supplement devoted to style. It is called “T” and is published 14 times a year.

In 2005 there appeared a literary section called “The Funny Pages” but soon it became unpopular and unfunny.
