Madeleine Rydin Health and Safety Instructor

“To be an instructor is not only to teach a class, it is way to get involved in the community, interact with all sort of people, and a great way to grow as a person. In addition, I get to make a difference. Every time I teach a class, I know that I have taught the participants something that might save a life or might help them or another person somewhere else. It is an amazing feeling.

WHY I VOLUNTEER

Kathleen is a native of an archipelago in South-East Asia of more than seven thousand islands, the Philippines. She grew up in the City of San Fernando which is well-known for giant lanterns and the Christmas Capital. She was blessed with wonderful parents and four elder brothers. Armed with a dream of passing on Florence Nightingale’s spirit, she pursued Nursing, a passion that goes above and beyond the call of duty. After twenty years of existence, she journeyed to the United States of America and joined the world’s finest Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, the most decorated rating in the US Navy. In January 2012, she worked in 4West (Critical Care Unit) in Naval Medical Center San Diego where she was equipped with competency, knowledge, experience and became a part of greatest team of nurses and corpsmen. In April 2013, as a self-proclaimed enthused sailor, she was transferred to join the brightest, strongest and motivated team of instructors. In January 2014, she was stationed in U.S. Naval Hospital Rota. She currently works in the Human Resources Department as the Command Awards Coordinator.

Committed to give back to the community, she recently joined the American Red Cross as the Recognition Chair. This is her way of helping or assisting other peo-ple in any way that she can. Additionally, it is fun to meet new friends and it is ful-filling on her part.

In the rare hours when she is hardly working, she enjoys watching movies, going to the beach, and travelling around Europe. She craves excitement, loves ad-ventures, very independent, speaks her mind, optimistic, and performs best under pressure. Lastly, she keeps a watchful eye out of any possibilities offered to be-come a better and bolder person.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM KATHLEEN!

September: Flu Prevention Month

Flu season is just around the corner, so this month I’d like to talk about this very contagious virus and the importance of protecting not only us, but also our neighbors.

Influenza, commonly known as the “flu”, is a very serious ill-ness that can become severe and lead to hospitalization or even death. People at high risk for complications are the eld-erly, young children, pregnant women, and people with cer-tain health conditions.

Did you know that if you are infected with the flu, you might be contagious even a day before you start showing any symptoms of the flu? And did you know that the flu might be spread to others from as far as 6 feet away?

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the best way to protect against the flu viruses is to get vaccinated every year. The more people that get vac-cinated against the flu, the lower the chances of it spreading through the community. This helps to protect those who are unable to get vaccinated, such as children younger than 6 months old, and people with certain medical conditions.

While getting the flu shot is very important, don’t forget to also practice good health habits. Hand-washing often, with soap and water, helps stop the spread of germs. Lastly, remember to cover your mouth when coughing!

For more information regarding the 2014-2015 Flu Season, the influenza vaccine, contraindications, and prevention tips, visit the CDC at: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/index.htm. See my tips on the last page about how to properly cover your cough to prevent the spread of germs!

Until next month! Nurse Gibbs

Being prepared means being equipped with the proper supplies you may need in the event of an emergency or disaster. Keep your supplies in an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or take with you in case you must evacuate. At a minimum, you should have the basic supplies listed below: • Water—one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home) • Food—non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home) • Flashlight • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible) • Extra batteries • First aid kit • Medications (7-day supply) and medical items • Multi-purpose tool • Sanitation and personal hygiene items • Copies of personal documents in a water proof container (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, pass ports, birth certificates, insurance policies) • Cell phone with chargers • Family and emergency contact information • Extra cash • Emergency blanket • Map(s) of the area
