Welcome to your (home) office, living room couch, breakfast table, or mobile device for the 22nd Annual Conference of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities! Amid the din of the ever-present news cycle; co-working, caregiving, or parenting demands; and fretting about the general state of all things, ASBH is meeting online for the first time. We are aware that 2020 is the year of uncertainty. The year of the absurd! The year of challenges. And in response to those challenges, we see it as the year of opportunity: to work, to raise our voices, to focus on what matters.

Understanding the incredible demands on our members in this moment, the ASBH Program Committee and executive leadership designed a conference that draws on the strengths of virtual meetings:

• The conference spans from Monday to Sunday, with less programming per day.

• Programming occurs mostly during workday hours across all time zones.

• Paper and flash sessions are prerecorded for viewing at your convenience starting on Monday, with live Q&A sessions scheduled Thursday through Sunday.

• All other sessions will be live beginning on Wednesday, and they will be recorded for later viewing.

• Prerecorded and recorded (live) sessions will be viewable for 30 days after the conference concludes (through November 17, 2020).

As with so many other aspects of life at the moment, we are disappointed that going virtual means we lose in-person social interaction. We will miss seeing our colleagues, friends, and frenemies in Baltimore. So we invite you to get creative. Do some e-mingling during the Wednesday night reception. Use your social media skills with the tag #ASBH20 on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn under @AmerSocBioHum. If you aren’t “social” in that way, go old school. Set up a conference call, send some e-mails, post on a blog, or write a letter to send in the post.

Planning for the annual conference always takes an enormous amount of work. The Program Committee thanks our reviewers and category leaders—without their hundreds of volunteer hours, we could not select high-quality presentations for you. We also thank Virginia Bartlett for serving as an ad hoc Program Committee member this year when we needed a bit more help than expected. ASBH President Ana Iltis and President-Elect Kayhan Parsi provided crucial support, both generally and especially as we thought through the implications of COVID-19 on

our conference planning. And Mary Beth Benner and Talia Lionetti supported all the planning and logistical aspects of the conference, which were considerable. Without them we could not have accomplished the modest goals we had for improving our October 2019 conference, and we certainly could not have transformed the meeting to an online conference on the fly.

We hope you find that the 2020 ASBH conference program meets your needs and stimulates your thinking. More than anything, though, we hope you find that the changes we have made to adapt to the moment make the programming accessible and enrich your professional, and perhaps personal, life. Thank you for attending.

With gratitude,

Thomas Cunningham, PhD, Chair Virginia L. Bartlett, PhD Erin Lamb, PhD Devan Stahl, PhD Stacey Tovino, JD PhD

For the first time in ASBH history, the 2020 Program Committee invited submissions of original art providing interpretations of the conference theme: Justice and Flourishing in a Pluralistic World. Thirteen submissions were received from both members and nonmembers. The winning design and the two designs receiving honorable mentions are shown below, along with the artists’ explanations.

First-Place DesignThe winning submission was used as the graphic theme of the 2020 Annual Conference and appears on the cover of this program notebook.

Artist: Joanna Sleigh This work reflects upon justice and flourishing in our contemporary pluralistic context of public health issues and climate change. Further, it questions notions of control through the production of scientific knowledge. Contained within circular petri dish–like forms are symbols of justice, health, and nature. The allegorical personification of justice—lady Lustitia—is set within a satellite picture of the blue melting Arctic ice, placed upon a microscopic photograph of human blood cells. An opaque medical illustration of lungs hangs from Lustitia’s scales, using transparency and placement to suggest the interconnection of human health and the health of the earth. Contrasting these solidities and bonding them together are dark lines of fluidity, evoking flows of change. The concept of flourishing is then represented through the binary code of 0 and 1, questioning our understanding of the term, given technological reductionism. Ultimately, the work juxtaposes and unites macro and micro issues of human and environmental health.

Honorable MentionsTwo designs were chosen for honorable mention.

Artist: Gregg ChadwickWith millions of others, my wife, transgender daughter, and I marched on January 21, 2017, in the #WomensMarch. Our crowd in Los Angeles numbered about 750,000. My artwork, which I titled The Future Is Woke, was the first in a series of paintings exploring this time of change and inclusivity. Artists often use their creations as a reflecting device that mirrors and focuses the viewer’s attention on social and political change. As Marvin Gaye sang so poignantly, “What’s going on.” Carrying the spirit of the Women’s March forward, my paintings document the protests that continue to call out the injustices in our society. From the Science March to the 2nd Annual Women’s March to the Families Belong Together gatherings, my art considers the place of social justice in our society and what it means for all of us to flourish together.

Artist: Lisa DubitskyDisability can isolate us, or we can come together on this rocky journey. We are all gazing into the abyss. This is my mother, who was overstimulated at a museum and asked to face the quiet wall. She was peaceful and safe there. I realized that my once fiery and glamorous mother, who took me to protests and Pete Seeger concerts, now needed serenity and courted loneliness. Her trajectory inspired me to paint this.
