OUTSTANDING OUTDOOR TENNIS FACILITY OF THE YEAR
l The new tennis facility at the Army Navy Country
Club includes 14 Har-Tru courts with subsurface
irrigation (10 with lights) and four new asphalt tennis courts,
along with cabanas, fencing and windscreens. The project
was challenging due to wet weather during construction
and limited access space for construction materials. In one
instance, an existing wall next to one battery of courts failed,
destroying the fence line, hydro court cells, sleeves and light-
pole foundations. The solution was to add extra stone to help
with compaction and counteract the wet conditions. The wall
was changed from poured concrete to a stacked block wall,
and the light-pole footers were redesigned by an engineer.

OUTSTANDING OUTDOOR TRACK FACILITY OF THE YEAR
l The new running track at the Gerard Filion Secondary
School in Quebec was designed to meet IAAF Class
1 standards. The project included the asphalt base and a
top-quality, eco-friendly, poured-in-place polyurethane
surface. The polyurethane “sandwich” system was applied in
four stages and required a perfectly level asphalt base and
highly precise measurements for the thickness of the layers.
Unprecedented cold weather created some delays in product
drying times, but the construction team was able to adjust
the schedule to complete the project on time.

OUTSTANDING SINGLE-FIELD FACILITY OF THE YEAR
l This renovation and reconstruction of the Lawrence
University Banta Bowl sports stadium involved
installing an expanded synthetic turf field to accommodate
soccer and football, along with the demolition of existing
support buildings and construction of a new concessions/
restroom/locker room building, grandstand seating, new
scoreboard and more. The reconstructed field was developed
to meet competitive guidelines and requirements of the
NFHSA and NCAA. Among the obstacles the contractor had
to contend with were an inadequate field width, stemming
from when the stadium was originally constructed in 1965,
and accommodating storm sewer and sanitary sewer
facilities that crossed under the stadium field.

OUTSTANDING MULTI-FIELD FACILITY OF THE YEAR
l The new 10-acre Shoreline Athletic Facility is built on a closed landfill site and now
provides multi-use synthetic turf fields for soccer, baseball, softball and lacrosse.
From design through construction, the process took five years, which included more than
a year of overburdening the site with more than 120,000 cubic yards of soil to accelerate
settlement. There also were many regulator landfill permit requirements to deal with,
including modifying the existing landfill gas extraction system. Design and construction
also had to accommodate the western burrowing owl, a protected species that used a
part of the site as a foraging habitat. The result, though, is a recreational space that is
completely flexible for end users, whether children or adults.

OUTSTANDING RESIDENTIAL TENNIS FACILITY OF THE YEAR
l The new residential court in Gladwyne, Pa., with LED lighting,
was a coordinated effort that, in addition to a court contractor,
included masons, excavators, electricians, landscapers and more.
Set among steep slopes, the site had limited access for construction
vehicles and materials. The concrete for the post-tensioned slab, for
instance, had to be pumped over 360 feet up a steep hill, and the
concrete for the custom stone retaining walls had to be mixed on-
site. The custom fencing of clear cedar posts and rails with mortise-
and-tenon construction also was built on-site. A pre-cast channel
drain was installed on the court, while yard drains were installed to
catch perimeter water run-off, all of which attaches to a storm-water
management system constructed under the court.

OUTSTANDING INDOOR TRACK FACILITY OF THE YEAR
● The new Virtue Field House at Middlebury College was designed
to be a flexible space, suitable for training and competition, yet
also be able to hold up to 5,000 people for large campus functions and
assemblies. The field house replaces a “bubble” that was an athletics-only
facility that housed an indoor competition track and floor space for field
events. The new facility incorporates a 200-meter indoor track, synthetic
turf practice space, expanded recreation space and improved spectator
accommodations. The design team aimed to create a facility that visually
and functionally departs from the limitations of traditional buildings of
this type, leaving Middlebury flexible and well-positioned to be able to
host regional and NCAA indoor track and field events for the first time.

Our Winners ‘Build It Right’On behalf of the American Sports Builders Association, I would like to
congratulate the 2016 Outstanding Facilities of the Year Award winners and
the team effort that these projects represent. The ASBA Awards Program
has the goal of promoting the highest standards of construction excellence.
Since 1996, ASBA has been honoring the award winners and recognizing
their outstanding construction projects at the December Technical Meeting,
our annual gathering. A complete listing of this year’s winners of awards,
along with the winners from the past three years, can be found on ASBA’s
website at www.sportsbuilders.org.
ASBA’s theme—“Build it Right”—is exemplified by the ASBA Awards
Program. Each project represents a team effort between designers, builders
and suppliers who have collaborated to produce the highest quality in sports
construction. ASBA’s programs are built around educating the professionals
in our industry, and providing networking and collaboration opportunities
for our members. The strong partnerships that exist within ASBA among its
builders, designers and suppliers are at the heart of this success.
Any ASBA members contributing to the design and/or construction of an
outstanding project or facility are encouraged to submit an application for
one of several industry awards.
Congratulations to this year’s award winners and thank you for continuing
to set examples for others to follow.
Pete Smith, CTCB
