The DetailsOVERVIEW:The 2016 Resident Boot Camp was a two-day course that addressed basic knowledge and skills needed for first year fellows in adult or pediatric pulmonary and/or critical care medicine programs. The course focused on topics and procedures that internal medicine residents may have had little or some exposure to, but which are essential to success as a first-year fellow. The course was for 152 in-coming fellows who had matched into a pulmonary or critical care fellowship program beginning July 2016 and featured over 110 faculty teachers!
OBJECTIVES:The goal of this course was to prepare physicians who are starting their adult and pediatric pulmonary and critical care fellowships in the coming academic year. The course provided hands-on training of skills that they can use day-one of fellowship with an emphasis on:
· Airway management including endotracheal intubation· Fiberoptic bronchoscopy and accompanying procedures· Noninvasive and invasive ventilator management· Thoracentesis· Calibration and operation of hemodynamic recording systems· Supervision of the technical aspects of pulmonary function testing· Insertion and management of chest tubes· Proficiency in use of ultrasound

“I want to thank the ATS and the Resident Boot Camp faculty for investing such tremendous time and effort in making such a great course available for “brand new” fellows like myself. By participating in the Boot Camp, I now feel so much more prepared to step into the ICU, the bronchoscopy suite or pulmonary clinic as a fellow on July 1, 2016. I can’t tell you how grateful I am - thank you!”
–Wendy EzegbunamSUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn
“I had completed the Resident Boot Camp and found the course fantastic for my own education to garner a basis of what the next year of my life was going to entail. The course was spot-on and the past year I have utilized each and every one of the skills obtained and/or introduced”.
–Karen Niehaus, MD University of Cincinnati
“The greatest benefit of attending this course is the introduction to ATS and networking with other peers and colleagues. The educational content is important, and I have gained knowledge that I have incorporated into my practice. Additionally, I have benefited tremendously from teaching in the RBC by being able to network with other pediatric educators in my field and demonstrate a commitment to teaching at the international level which is rare at my stage of training.”
