AMET, situated at Kanathur, on the outskirts of the City of Chennai, is a state-of-the-art establishment totally dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge to the Shipping Industry. It is a private enterprise promoted by Smt.Pattammal Educational and Charitable Trust. AMET was launched on the 15th of February 1993. This is the only Academy of its kind in South India that caters to the needs of the Shipping Industry not just in India, but the world over. ENGINEER OFFICERA career in the Merchant Navy as an Engineer Officer can be a rewarding one, both financially and in terms of job satisfaction. There are only a few ex-seafaring Engineers who do not look back at their time on board ship as a happy and worthwhile experience. For the able young officer, this system provides a smooth and rapid path of career development. The process is likely to take less than eight years from the commencement of cadetship till qualifying with Class 2 Certificate and probably half as long again before an appointment as a Chief Engineer can be expected.

Most ships have 4 or 5 Engineer Officers ranging in seniority from the most junior 5th or 4th Engineer Officer through the ranks of 3rd and 2nd Engineer Officer to finally Chief Engineer Officer. In progressing from the Engine Cadet to Chief Engineer Officer, one can expect to serve in each of these capacities in turn. Promotion from one to the other will depend on the Certificate of Competency held, the quality of experience and of course, personal merit. Most Marine Engineers do not remain at sea throughout their working life. After having gained their Class I Certificate and experience as a senior officer on board, they seek employment ashore. Shore based employers generally have high regard for the seafaring engineer and consequently the transfer from shipboard to land based employment is usually easily achieved.

DECK OFFICERYou will start your career in the Merchant Navy with a certain period of training in Nautical Training Institutions ashore. Thereafter you will go to sea on merchant ships as a Deck Cadet for a further specified duration of sea service. This sea-service on board is an essential part of the training, which will lead you to your immediate goal of Deck officer Class 3 Certificate of Competency.

After obtaining the Deck Officer Class 3 Certificate of Competency, you will progress to the rank of Third Officer and later to Second Officer. After passing further examinations interspersed with specified periods of intervening sea service, you will attain the rank of a Chief Officer, and finally that of a Captain, in command of a ship.

In progressing from a Cadet to Captain you can expect to serve in each of these capacities in turn. Promotion from one to the other will depend on the Certificate of Competency you hold, the quality of your experience and, of course, personal merit.

AMET has entered into an agreement with Glasgow College of Nautical Studies to conduct the Higher National Diploma Courses in two parts, the first year at AMET Chennai, and the second year at GCNS, Glasgow.

Glasgow College of Nautical Studies (GCNS) came into existence in 1968. It is situated on the South bank of the river Clyde, close to the center of the city of Glasgow, in Scotland U.K. The College prides itself on the quality of the education and training it provides. This training is valued for what it leads to, rather than solely being an end in itself, a fact that is exemplified by their courses in Maritime Studies, Engineering and Telecommunication.

The College, deservedly, has an international reputation in Nautical Studies, with students attending classes from all over the United Kingdom and abroad. The College as a Hall of Residence (hostel) with over 200 rooms. Their courses combine theory with hands-on experience in a well-equipped workshop. They also provide the full range of preparatory courses for the Department of Transport (U.K.) Certificates of Competency for Marine Engineering and Deck Officers.

The awarding body for the Higher National Diploma Courses that we are conducting in collaboration with GCNS is the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and its rules and regulations govern the conduct of the courses and the final award.

ELECTRO TECHNICAL OFFICER (ETO) COURSEin collaboration withIndian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Madras

The Centre of Continuing Education, INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, Chennai, has signed an agreement with the ACADEMY OF MARITIME EDUCATION AND TRAINING (AMET), Chennai, to jointly conduct an ELECTRO-TECHNICAL OFFICER (ETO) TRAINING PROGRAMME for retraining Radio Officers of Merchant Navy Ships, whose jobs have become redundant after the new Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) regulations came into force on February 1, 1999. Under these regulations, Navigating Officers who are trained in the Distress Alert and Search and Rescue aspects of GMDSS will carry out all the related communication functions.

This is the first endeavor in the world, to retrain Radio Officers within a period of 24 weeks and make them full-fledged Electro-Technical Officers, who are able to discharge an enlarged scope of responsibilities on board Merchant Navy Ships in a meaningful and productive manner.

This unique programme designed by experts in Shipping field, is a balanced blend of theory, laboratory work and practical training. This course of study covers Shipboard Electrical Power Systems. Control Systems and Automation, Satellite Communication Systems, Marine Radar Systems etc. This course will he handled by eminent faculty members of IIT Madras and experienced specialists at AMET, drawn from the Shipping Industry. After completion of the programme, Radio Officers, holding Certificate of Proficiency (First or Second Class) will become Electro-Technical Officers.

The Electro-Technical Officers will eventually replace two categories of Officers on board ships, namely, Radio Officers and Electrical Officers. On successful completion of the course, an ETO Certificate will be jointly issued by IIT Madras and AMET.

EligibilityPreferably Radio Officers holding second class COP with about five years sea service on board Merchant Navy Ships. Electrical Officers and B.E. (EEE or ECE) are also eligible.

Features of the Marine Electrical Officer’s ProgrammeThis unique Sector-Specific programme which is the first of its kind in India, focuses on the needs of appropriate education and training in the areas of Electrical and Electronics. The programme of study has been carefully designed by experts and professionals in shipping lines based on both practical as well as theoretical requirements with a strong emphasis on modern shipping practices. Yet another unique feature of this programme is that the curriculum will be largely handled by industry faculty who are experienced professionals in this field. This programme is designed to equip the students with adequate skills and knowledge in Electrical and Electronics in the ships.

Educational Qualification (1) Pass in 10+2 or equivalent with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with a PCM aggregate of not less than 60% or (2) With Physics as individual subject in one year, B.Sc., in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with an average of not less than 55% of marks in the final year. or (3) B.E./B.Tech. Degree from I.I.T. or from a college recognized by AICTE. and Should have passed in the English language as a subject, at either 10th or 12th Standard or in the Degree / Diploma Course, conducted by the Board or any University with not less than 50% marks.

Mr. Rajesh Ramachandran is the Vice Chairman of The Academy of Maritime Education and Training. He is an MBA from CARDIFF BUSINESS SCHOOL UK. After gaining the insight in various disciplines i.e. in Finance, Marketing and Systems he heads the Computer Higher Education and Software Solutions (A sister concern of AMET). He is the youngest and the most enterprising dignitary of the team.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERCapt. S.Bhardwaj has more than 30 years of work experience, which includes 5 years as Master of various types of ships and then 17 years of multi-disciplinary shore experience in senior management positions. His last five years was in Top Management positions in the highly successful Seahorse group.

As part of his work experience, he has wide exposure to the management of many types of industries and organizations besides shipping, and in particular Training and Professional Institutes are his core competency. He is the current chairman of The Nautical Institute- India South Branch. A member of International Federation of Ship Masters Association, UK. On the panel of Experts of the IMO London. On the panel of examiners of Madras University, Anna University and the MMD.

THE TRAINING CO-ORDINATORMr. K. Seyadu, M.Sc. (Physics) with specialisation in Electronics, is our Training Co-ordinator for the Higher National Diploma Courses in Marine Engineering & Nautical Science, and the Graduate Marine Engineering Courses. He also co-ordinates the B.E. Marine Engineering, B.E. Marine Technology and B.Sc., Nautical Science Courses. He has been associated with Maritime Training for over 16 years. He was earlier a Lecturer at Training Ship ‘Rahaman’ at Navi Mumbai, and at the National Institute of Port Management at Chennai. He has been with AMET since inception.

H.O.D. - NAUTICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENTCapt. Yeshwant Raj (Master FG) had his initial training on the Dufferein / Rajendra from 1970-72. Thereafter he sailed with The Shipping Corporation of India in various ascending capacities till 1988. He then sailed on foreign flag vessels. He has been in command for twenty years. He is a member of the Company of Master Mariners of India.

H.O.D. - MARINE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTMr. A.Venugopal, D.M.E, C.Eng, F.I. Mar E, started his career with India Steam Ship Company Pvt Ltd.,. After obtaining second engineers certificate of competency joined Shipping Corporation of India & served in various levels to become Chief engineer in 1980. And from 1982 he served as chief engineer in foreign flag vessels. He served as Chief engineer for more than fifteen years in UNIVAN SHIPPING MANAGEMENT before joining AMET as faculty in 2003.

CHAIRMANMr. J. Ramachandran is the Managing Trustee of Smt. Pattammal Educational and Charitable Trust. He is the Chairman of The Academy of Maritime Education and Training, which operates under the aegis of this Trust. He is also the Chairman of a social welfare organisation called National Association of Educated Self-Employed Youth (NAESEY) which generates self employment opportunities for the educated unemployed. He was sponsored in the year 1994 by the Government of USA to participate in a community symposium along with leading social activists from 18 other countries. H.O.D. - STCW DEPARTMENTCapt. R.K. Kumar, MICS, CMMI has served the Shipping Industry for over thirty years. After passing out from T.S. Rejendra in 1974 he sailed first with SISCO and later with foreign companies in various ascending capacities on different types of vessels including cadet-cum-cargo ships. His shore experience since 1989 included Marine Survey & Insurance, aned Container Terminal Management. He has to his credit several Marine Casualty Investigations. He is a full member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, London, and is currently the Secretary of their Madras Overseas Branch.

DEAN - MANAGEMENT STUDIESMr.N. Srinivasan is the Dean for our Management Studies Department. He has graduated from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and brings with him 18 years of industry experience (both in India & in United Arab Emirates) in the areas of Commercial Shipping & Logistics. Mr. Srinivasan’s vision is to enable AMET to emerge as a leading educational & research resource center in Asia Pacific region. AMET’s Marine E-learning curriculum development is being coordinated by Mr. Srinivasan. The Marine E-learning courses are being designed to cater to the global needs for high quality management courses in Shipping, Logistics & Port Management sectors.

H.O.D. - MANAGEMENT STUDIESMr. J.P. Thiagarajan, M.A.,M.B.A.,B.L.,MICS, CAIIB, DBM, PDGPM, worked as Manager in a Public Sector bank for 25 years out of which 8 years was as a Faculty in the Bank’s Staff College. He has specialized in the areas of Management Accounting & Financial Management, Organizational Behaviour, Business Law and other Management subjects.

H.O.D. - PHYSICSProf. K. Swami, M.Sc.,M.Phil., PDGCA, has 33 years of teaching experience in Government Colleges of which 18 years was at Post Graduate Level. He was the Chairman of Examinations, Examiner at Post Graduate and Under Graduate Level, and a Member of the Post Graduate Board of Studies. He has attended a number of National Seminars and authored many papers.

H.O.D. - CHEMISTRYDr. V. Balasubramanian, M.Sc.,Ph.D. is the HOD of the Chemistry Department. Earlier he was the Professor of Chemistry at Presidency College, Chennai. He has over 35 years of teaching and research experience. He was the guide for a number of Ph.D. Students. Till date he has produced 14 Ph.D. and 17 M.Phil. Scholars. He has also presented 90 Research papers and authored 27 text books.

H.O.D. - MATHEMATICSProf.G.Kanagasabapathy, M.Sc., M.Phil., D.H.Ed., is the HOD of Mathematics. He has 36 years of experience including 19 years in Presidency College, Chennai. He retired from Presidency college as HOD of Maths. He was Chairman of Examination and Board of Studies. He was a member of High Level Committee for revision of syllabus from I Std to XII Std in Maths. He has authored a text book on Theory of Equation for B.Sc.

FINANCE MANAGERMr.N.Rajan is our new Finance Manager. He is an Associate member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants Of India since 1987.He brings with him corporate experience in the areas of financial planning, budgeting, corporate governance and internal audit.
