The AmigOs
would like to
thank Sylvia
Bencomo
with the Green
Valley Sheriff ’s
Auxiliary Vol-
unteers Scam
Squad, along
with our very
own Ira Cochran. At our last Meet and
Greet they gave a very informative
presentation on the current scams
happening in our community. The
scammers are getting better and better
at their “craft”, so you don’t realize
what happened until it is too late.

The Board of DirectorsWould Like to Wish
You and Your Family aHappy Thanksgiving!
Last month the GVR AmigOs Men’s
Club started our “Season of Giving”
campaign. At our last Meet and Greet,
we had a number of members bring
down non-perishable food in support
of those in need and less fortunate in
our neighboring communities. Unfor-
tunately, it wasn’t as many members as
anticipated. Once again for the next
Meet and Greet, we sincerely request
that everyone bring down at least a couple cans, packs, or boxes of food in support
of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. The items most in need are:
canned meats, vegetables, fruit, peanut butter, dried/canned beans, cereal, rice,
and pasta. On behalf of the many Arizona residents, especially children and sen-
iors, your help is needed and much appreciated.

President’s MessagePresident’s Message
Dear Friends,
November is the time to be especially
thankful, a time to remember and
to embrace those who enrich our
lives. I’m thankful for a lot of
things, but this year I’m most
thankful for all of you!
Most of us have family in different parts of the nation
and may not be able to spend Thanksgiving together. But
just remember that family isn’t always about the people in
your life who are blood relations. It’s about the people in
your life who want you to be in theirs. It’s about the people
in your life who accept you for who you are, support you
in the things you choose to do, and no matter what, are
there for you. It’s the people in your life who care for you,
respect you and who you can depend on.
The AmigOs are more than just a club. It is my hope that
most of you do or will come to see it as an extended family
of close friends.
As always, if you have any questions, club suggestions, or
just want to make a comment, please email me at:
[email protected] or speak to me in person at
any meeting.
Yours in Service and Dedication,
ROB PETRILLO

Birding Group Trip to Madera Canyon
For the October 16th “Out and About” trip, Dave Fink organized a great 2-hour desert trail ride followed by a barbecue
lunch. Unfortunately Dave couldn’t make it due to an unexpected medical procedure. On October 24th a mix of new and
experienced birders spent the morning at Madera Canyon observing the many birds at the feeders as well as on a short hike
on Proctor Road. The afternoon ended with a picnic lunch enjoying the beautiful weather.

The AmigOs Couples group had a lovely evening on
October 20th at CPAC celebrating Oktoberfest. The

and wine. We filled three tables with 24 people! Missed
out on the dancing? Then join them on November 30th
at the Gaslight Music Hall Dance Party (see details else-
where in this issue.)
On October 13th, Shooting Group leader, Ira Cochran
invited the ladies to join our monthly range trip. It was
the first time shooting for all but one of the ladies and
they enjoyed it so much that they want to return.

Book Club GroupThe GVR AmigOs
Book Club will be start-
ing up again on Friday,

at the home of Mike
McGinely. We will be
discussing Killers of the Flower Moon: The OsageMurders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann. If
you would like to join the group please contact group
leader: Bill Stewart at [email protected]
In this gripping true-crime nar-
rative, at least two dozen people
were murdered from 1921 to
1926 by a killer or killers appar-
ently targeting members of the
Osage Indian Nation, who at
the time were considered “the
wealthiest people per capita in
the world” thanks to the discovery
of oil beneath their lands. The
outcry over the killings led to
the involvement in 1925 of an
“obscure” branch of the Justice
Department, J. Edgar Hoover’s Bureau of Investigation.
The Osage Murders inquiry helped Hoover to make the
case for a “national, more professional, scientifically
skilled” police force.
Special Interest GroupsSpecial Interest GroupsOne of the best things about the AmigOs Men’s Club are the unlimited number of special interest groups that we can have.
If you have a hobby, interest, or skill that at least one other member shares with you then you can start a group. Each group
can decide when to meet, how often to meet, and what to do within the group. One person is chosen as the chair and to-
gether, hopefully will expand the size of the group. Mike Malenfant has compiled the interests of our current members into
a spreadsheet. If you wish to start a group with others who share a similar interest, feel free to call or e-mail each other and
get something started. Once you have your group, contact the club’s Special Interest Committee Chair at
[email protected] to make it official.
Breakfast GroupThe AmigOs’ monthly
breakfast group meets at
9am on the first Saturday
of every month at the
Grill on the Green. Join a
large and friendly bunch of guys for good food and good
conversation. A great opportunity to meet and get to know
other members in a relaxing atmosphere. For more infor-
mation contact Manny Rivers at [email protected]

for some events,
their wives) are invited to attend our monthly day trips.

Amonthlycolumntopromotehealthierlivingforthoseover50yearsold
PartFive:DietandMotivationNow that you are exercising more, you will need to
support those higher activity levels with the right diet.
Diet as well as exercise can have a major impact on energy,
mood, and fitness. Many older adults don’t get sufficient
high-quality protein in their diets despite evidence suggesting
they actually need more than younger people to maintain
energy levels and lean muscle mass, promote recovery from
illness and injury, and support overall health. Older adults
without kidney disease or diabetes should aim for about 0.5
grams of protein per pound of body weight.
Vary your sources of protein. Instead of relying on just red
meat, include more fish, poultry, beans, and eggs. Reduce
the amount of processed carbohydrates you consume—
pastries, cakes, pizza, cookies and chips—and replace them
with high-quality protein. Snack on nuts and seeds instead
of chips, replace a baked dessert with Greek yogurt, swap
out slices of pizza for a grilled chicken breast and beans.
Tipsforstayingmotivated
It’s easy to become discouraged when illness, injury, or changes
in the weather interrupt your routine and seem to set you back
to square one. But there
are ways to stay moti-
vated when life’s chal-
lenges get in the way:
Focus on short-term
goals, such as improv-
ing your mood and en-
ergy levels and
reducing stress, rather
than goals such as
weight loss, which can take longer to achieve.
Reward yourself when you successfully complete a work-
out, reach a new fitness goal, or simply show up on a day
when you were tempted to ditch your activity plans. Choose
something you look forward to, but don’t allow yourself to
do it until after exercising, such as having a hot bath or a
favorite cup of coffee.
Keep a log. A training log can help you get more from your
workout. It will help you organize and save information
about your exercise routine, so you can work toward a specific
goal. It can also help you identify challenging situations and
barriers to exercise.
Record your exercises and what settings you use for each
machine. Keep track of your distance (for running, cycling,
swimming), time, intensity, milestones, and personal bests.
You may also want to keep track of your weight, pulse, diet,
time of day, calories burned, and your mood.
Out of sight, out of mind. You know that you must exercise,
but without a log to keep track it is almost impossible to
know what you have done. So keep a log as a visual reminder.
Get support. When you work out with a friend or family
member, you can encourage and motivate each other.
HowtostayfitwhenyourroutinechangesYou're on vacation - Many hotels have fitness centers.
Bring along your exercise clothing or equipment (resistance
band, bathing suit, or walking shoes). Get out and see the
sights on foot rather than just by tour bus.
Caring for an ill spouse is taking up too much of your
time - Work out to an exercise video when your spouse is
napping. Ask a family member or friend to come over so
you can go for a walk.
Your usual exercise buddy moves away - Ask another
friend to go with you on your daily walk. Reach out to other
older adults in your area—many are in the same boat as you,
so be the one to break the ice.
Illness keeps you out of action for a few weeks - Wait
until you feel better and then start your activity again.
Gradually build back up to your previous level of activity.
You're recovering from injury or surgery - Talk with
your doctor about specific exercises and activities you can
do safely. Start slowly and gradually build up your activities
as you become stronger.
