COMING UP We have a saying that every dog at our shelter has to wait a certain amount of time until the perfect family comes to adopt him or her, and for some dogs, it just takes a while for their new family to come and find them. This definitely was the case with Summer. In November of 2011, a two-year-old white female pit bull terrier mix arrived at our shelter as a stray. Summer had a flea allergy that left her hind legs discolored, but she quickly recovered from this illness and became available for adoption. Her sweet and affectionate nature combined with her penchant for enthusiastically playing fetch quickly made her a volunteer favorite, and she became a regular at our outside adoption events. But months went by and the seasons changed, and while we were happy to interact with Summer, we couldn’t understand why she kept getting overlooked by the many adopters who came to our shelter looking for a new dog. In mid-July, around 8 months after Summer arrived at the shelter, Andrea Torre was looking online and saw a picture of a smiling dog in an article detailing our Fun In the Run event. She instantly took a liking to Summer’s sweet face and did an online search to find out more information on her. “Once I saw her videos, I was totally hooked on her,” Andrea says. “Her face was so expressive, and her big smile and her eyes were amazing!” Andrea and her stepson Joe went to the shelter the next day to meet Summer. As they walked down the hallway the shelter, the majority of dogs were excitedly barking as they sometimes do when they see visitors. However, when they got to Summer’s kennel, she was laying quietly on her bed. Andrea says, “Her ears were bent back, and she just looked at us as if to say, ‘Please pick me, please pick me!’” A volunteer took Summer out for a meet and greet, and she ended up sitting right at Joe’s feet. A meeting with the rest of the family was arranged, and soon Summer was finally in her new home! Summer loves going on walks, riding in the car, getting bathed and, of course, playing fetch with her new family. She especially enjoys playing with Erica and Joe, who are pictured here with Summer. They like how affectionate and loving she is. “She kisses me all the time,” says Joe. In addition, Erica loves the fact that Summer always looks like she’s smiling, especially when she gets excited. She also likes to show off her own collection of doggie accessories, which is all in pink to match her ears. Summer has gained back some of the weight that she lost during her stay at the shelter, and her coat is now beautiful and shiny. Summer has become an integral part of the family. Occasionally she’s allowed to go to work with Andrea. At times, there is a spirited discussion over whose bedroom Summer gets to sleep in. They recently had a picnic at their house with family and friends, and Summer enjoyed playing with all the new visitors to her house. It is clear that Summer now has a great life and an even better future, especially when you consider her rocky start in life before she arrived at the shelter. “She’s the best little dog in the world,” Andrea says. “We can’t imagine life without her now.” With a soft bed, a loving family and plenty of tennis balls, Summer would agree that her long stay at the shelter was definitely worth the wait. -Debby Wan, Volunteer A Perfect Summer's End October 20, 2012 11am - 3pm 6 th Annual CT National Pit Bull Awareness Day Warsaw Park, Pulaski High- way, Ansonia. The RJ Julia Independent Bookstore, the legendary literary gathering in Madison,

CT has become a big supporter of the FNHAS. Each month, one of our adoptable

dogs is spotlighted on a Sunday from 11-1 amid the bestsellers, oversized

cupcakes, and greeters of all ages. Karma has been favorable here, as all dogs to

date have been adopted into loving homes. Kirsten Hess, manager for marketing

and business development for RJ’s, and her daughter Madeleine, have been the

harbingers of good cheer as they bring their canine savvy to the storefront. Their

idea to lure potential adopters to one of adoptable dogs, Waldo, a mix of tail

wagging, smiling, pooch resulted in the ‘Where’s Waldo’ extravaganza, complete

with clues as to his whereabouts throughout the day. Waldo even sported the red

and white striped jersey, sans spectacles and hat, and the chase was on. Waldo

is now in his forever home, thanks to the combined efforts of the FNHAS and RJ

Julia’s. Also pictured is the latest star, Rossi. -Elaine Spinato, Volunteer

it? Simply call Helping Hands, a thrift store with locations in

Orange, and North Haven, to arrange for a pickup by the friendly

staff. When you donate your gently used clothing, household

items, and furniture in our name, we can earn 18% of the sales.

And, you’re also helping folks who need to furnish their digs

cut rate prices. Who doesn’t love a bargain? Better still, who

doesn’t love helping a shelter animal? For more information,

Queen of Her CastleDo you remember Joanie,

the calico cat who lived

in the shelter for over a

year? Following her debut

in the last Newsletter, she

became the “Queen of

the Cat room” and regally

watched over all cat activities. She would smugly sit on laps of

visitors and volunteers while awaiting the “one” who would be

smart enough to take her home.

In the beginning of June, Gladys Walton walked through

the door. She was looking for a companion, a laid-back,

mature, feline friend. Gladys was “the one” and Joanie knew

it immediately. This wonderful woman took Joanie, (now

appropriately named “Queenie”) home to begin a new life. The

news was like a bolt of lightning - traveling quickly to all of

Joanie’s supporters – cheers could be heard throughout New

Haven.

Gladys reports that Queenie is devoted only to her and follows

her everywhere. She tolerates Gladys’ son and occasional

visitors; however, she only has eyes for Gladys (and her lap).

Queenie has not lost her appetite and frequently can be seen

smiling contently in her sleep. -Karen Marchione, Volunteer
