Overview
Slide 4
Copyright 2014 Accenture All rights reserved. The Need for HELP
Africa has a drastic shortage of community health volunteers
(CHVs), Kenya alone needs 240,000 volunteers, with Africa needing 1
million Training is inconsistent, and many CHVs deal with real
health issues, but have not been retrained for years The Ministry
of Health has created a standardised CHV Basic Curriculum, but how
can the training for all the CHVs be done scalably, efficiently,
and sustainably? 3
Slide 5
Copyright 2014 Accenture All rights reserved. The Mobile
Learning Opportunity Africa has seen wide-spread usage of mobile
phones. Penetration is 97% amongst the CHV community Almost 70% of
the health workers still use basic or feature phones, with smart
phones being a very small minority Based on this, Accenture
Development Partnerships, AMREF and Safaricom developed a strategy
for creating an innovative mobile learning solution, the Health
Enablement and Learning Platform, that could deliver training to
CHVs using only basic phones The initial phase is a 12 month pilot
across 3 sites (rural, nomadic, and urban) to train 318 CHVs 4

HELP is built for basic phones, but implements advanced features
such as scheduling and collaboration Almost any CHV can access the
system after only 1.5 days instruction, making the solution
scalable and sustainable SMS and Audio content delivery is
intelligently controlled with an advanced Scheduling system A
tailored mLearning Pegagogy defines multiple interaction and
learning approaches Group chat allows collaboration within members
of a community unit Automated reports keep CHVs and supervisors
informed and on-track 6 I never knew a phone could be used to
