UPCOMING EXHIBITION:
David Aylsworth: Either/And On View: December 10, 2016 - February 26, 2017
Opening Reception: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 16, 2016
Featured Speaker: Artist David Aylsworth
Houston artist David Aylsworth is well-known within Texas art circles for his stunning abstract paintings celebrating his facility with the brush, sophisticated understanding of color, and harmonious spatial relationships between form and shape. He is inspired by images around him, in both a mental and physical sense, and paints intersecting lines and shapes with luscious strokes, giving his works a sense of energy and movement.
Aylsworth’s titles often reference songs and show tunes,
at times giving his highly abstract, non-objective style, a sort of verbal and lyrical foundation. Born in Tiffin, Ohio, Aylsworth graduated in 1989 with his BFA from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, and was an artist in residence in the Core Program at the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, from 1989-91. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Inman Gallery (2016), Morgan Lehman in New York (2014) and Holly Johnson Gallery (2013). His paintings are found in numerous private and permanent collections, including the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Dallas Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi. A full color catalogue will accompany this exhibition. AMSET will publish a full color catalogue in conjunction with this exhibition, including an artist statement by Aylsworth, critical essay by Dr. Sandra Zalman, Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Houston, exhibition images, checklist and an artist biography. The exhibition will travel to the Galveston Arts Center (on view March 4 – April 16, 2017) following its debut at AMSET. This exhibition is generously funded, in part, by Glen Gonzalez and Steve Summers, Linda and George Kelly, Jim F. Avant, Bob Black and Gary Tucker, Sissy and Denny Kempner, the City of Beaumont – Beaumont CVB, the City of Beaumont, the Wesley W. Washburn, M.D. and Lulu L. Smith, M.D. Endowment Fund, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Charitable Foundation.

There was quite An Art Happening at AMSET on Friday, September 9th. The 29th Anniversary Gala honored arts patron, Amelie Cobb, and her son, celebrated artist, John Cobb. This event was Chaired by the amazingly talented and hardworking Keely and Craig Kinsel, and with support from Gala Committee members Judy Black, Sandra Clark, Sandy Fertitta, Lori Lockwood, Albert Nolen and Janey Phelan, guests had the opportunity to join in AMSET’s largest fundraiser of the year. Everyone arrived at 6:30 p.m., for a cocktail hour that included three Art Happening group activities; a bottle cap mural, a vinyl circle mural and a hoola hoop dance-along. Signature drinks, such as the “Cape Cobb” and the “Juan Cobb margarita” and a silent auction added to the fun. At 7:30 p.m., the doors opened to the café where guests were treated
to a sumptuous buffet of beef short ribs, Chicken Bryan and other delectable delights prepared by Two Magnolias. Everyone was seated in a large air conditioned tent adorned ala Janey Phelan with neon lanterns and linens. The live auction officiated by the distinguished Albert Nolen, included travel packages, dinners, sport packages and artwork, and brought in
an unprecedented $53,260 in income. The auction was followed by dessert shots and great dance music by disc jockey Mark Fiorenza. Although all the numbers have yet to be finalized, net income is expected to be around $130,000, which exceeds the budgeted income by $10,000. Congratulations to Keely and Craig Kinsel for making this Art Happening HAPPEN!
The Art Museum’s underground coven of witches are brewing something in their cauldron again this year! So grab your broom and fly on down to The Monster Mash: an AMSET Bash!, 7 – 11 p.m. on Friday, October 21, for this bewitching freak show. At this gruesome gathering for ages 21 and older, there will be a creative costume contest with fearsome first, second and third place prizes. Our theme this year is “WITCHING HOUR,” but you can be as creative as ever with your chosen garb if you aren’t swept up with the par-tay theme. Octoberfest and pumpkin brews including the popular hard ciders will be available for consumption as well as creepy cuisine from the vampires of Two Magnolias, Basic Foods, Chef KJ Bradford, H-E-B and Klara J’s Artisan Confections. Pre-sale tickets are $30.00 for museum members and $40.00 for non-members and at the door. Tickets can be bought on the AMSET website, by contacting your favorite AMSET Board member, by going online to

Steve Murphy: It’s All Come Down to This On View: December 10, 2016 - February 26, 2017
Opening Reception: 6-8 p.m., Friday, December 16, 2016
Featured Speaker: Artist Steve Murphy
Southeast Texas native Steve Murphy is best known for his poetically titled, minimal steel sculptures. Murphy attended Lamar University in Beaumont, followed by the University of Houston, where he received his B.A. in 1975. During his early years, Murphy focused on painting, but eventually experimented with sculpture. He is fascinated by the reduction of the essential elements of art – such as line, shape, color, form, space, texture and value – to basic, geometric forms, elegant in their simplicity and visual presence. He often works in series, allowing the design of sculptures to build on each other, exploring the creative possibilities of a form and the energy developed by a slight alteration in angle or line, allowing a piece to grow and mature in the series. This exhibition will feature recent sculptures by Murphy, created in his Houston home and studio. This exhibition is generously funded, in part, by the City of Beaumont – Beaumont CVB, the City of Beaumont, the Wesley W. Washburn, M.D. and Lulu L. Smith, M.D. Endowment Fund, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Charitable Foundation.

Ann Wood, a native of California and MFA graduate of the University of Texas in San Antonio, is recognized for her mixed media sculptures, wall hangings and site-specific installations characterized by vivid colors, wild and fantastical flora and fauna motifs, in a variety of media. For AMSET’s fall exhibition season premier, Wood debuts Nest: a site-specific, magical, canopied forest that suspends from AMSET’s gallery ceiling, inviting viewers to step into her fantastical world of vivid, artistic splendor. Nest is interactive and visitors are welcome to walk under and through the canopied formation. Wood’s signature mixed media wall-hangings and sculptures will also adorn the gallery, creating a tapestry-like effect as they spill off of the walls and into the gallery space. A video interview with Wood explaining her art, career and the site-specific Nest installation will be featured on a continuous loop in the Conn Gallery space adjacent to AMSET’s main galleries for the duration of the exhibition.
This exhibition is generously funded, in part, by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, Rob Clark and Jerry Thacker, Kathé and Jim Hendricks, Alexandra Irvine, the City of Beaumont, the Wesley W. Washburn, M.D. and Lulu L. Smith, M.D. Endowment Fund, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Charitable Foundation.
