ScienceScience is about discovery, and my classroom would involve opportunities for students to discover and create their own knowledge. For example, they would be involved in:

Constructing their own circuits given supplies such as batteries, wires and switches.

Exploring properties of light by examining the appearance of objects like a pencil or a penny dropped in glass beaker filled with water.

Observing energy transformations which take place with common toys.

Classifying minerals using dichotomous keys.

Social studies can be so much more than memorizing dates and names. Social studies classes should bring the peoples of the past and the cultures of today alive for students. In my classroom, this would look like:

Role playing activities, such as a “find someone who” activity to introduce students to a new culture or time period.

Social service projects to encourage reflective citizenship.

“Fishbowl” discussion activities where students watch groups discuss an idea and rate the participants on various criteria before switching roles.

Research projects which encourage students to use techniques actually used by social scientists.

“Ms. Lambert is a natural in the classroom. She is collaborative and reflective by nature…….she will be an asset to any district that chooses to hire her. “

Dr. Judy Hotz, Xavier University Supervisor.

Reading/Language ArtsI approach reading and writing as tools for learning. I believe in reading and writing across the curriculum. Students learn academic content in greater depth and remember it better if they write and read about it. My classroom would involve:

Literature Circles, where students come together to read and discuss books and perform roles such as “illustrator” and “word detective” so that all students are accountable to the group.

Writer’s workshop, where students can peer-review each other’s writing and conference with the teacher and each-other to develop ideas.

Writing assignments to deepen understanding, which offer the students a RAFT-role, audience, format and topic.

“Ms. Lambert has always been well prepared, able to adapt to different situations as they arise, and shown a great rapport with the students, staff and administration at this school.”

Mr. Chris Vandergriff, 7th Grade Social Studies Teacher at Glen Este Middle School.

Teaching Philosophy“Education then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of men, the balance-wheel of the social machinery.” –Horace Mann”

I begin my statement of my teaching philosophy and my core beliefs with this quote because it exemplifies my strong conviction that education equips young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to make of their life whatever they want to make of it. We may be born into unfortunate circumstances, but we do not have to remain in them.  I believe that education has the power to transform lives and communities.

I believe that every young person has a unique combination of talents and personality to offer the world and it is an educator’s job to help them to develop their full potential.  Adolescents need an adult advocate to support them in their search for identity and to guide them towards positive interactions with adults and peers.

Students also need opportunities to develop content through collaboration with their peers. Young people learn best when allowed to work together to solve problems and seek new meaning.  Learning activities should be inquiry based whenever possible, and they should also be appropriately challenging so that students can actively construct their own knowledge and develop deeper understanding of material.

I believe that teachers should work together whenever possible to plan curriculum and discuss how to best meet the needs of their students. I also believe that a teacher should strive to build strong rapport with students-students need to know that teachers care about them and are committed to their success.

Classroom Management is all about procedures. I would have many procedures set in place so students always know what is expected of them and what the consequences will be if they do not follow procedures.
