HOW TO STAY SAFEWHEN AN ACTIVE SHOOTER THREATENS

lf you see suspicious activity, let anauthority know right away.

Many places, such as houses ofworship, workplaces, and schools,have plans in place to help yourespond safely. Ask about theseplans and get familiar with them. Ifyou participate in an active shooterdrill, talk with your family about whatyou learned and how to apply it toother locations.

When you visit a building such as ashopping mall or hea!thcare facility,take time to identify two nearby exits.Get in the habit of doing this,

Map out places to hide. In roomswithout windows, behind soliddoors with locks, under desks, orbehind heavy furniture such aslarge filing cabinets can make goodhiding places.

RUN. Getting away from the shooteror shooters is the top priority. Leaveyour things behind and run away. Ifsafe to do so, warn others nearby.Call 911 when you are safe. Describeeach shooter, their locations,and weapons.

HIDE. If you cannot get away safely,find a place to hide. Get out of theshooter's view and stay very quiet.Silence your electronic devices andmake sure they won't vibrate. Lockand block doors, close blinds, andturn off the lights. Do not hide ingroups-spread out along walls orhide separately to make it moredifficult for the shooter. Try tocommunicate with police silently-such as through text messages or byputting a sign in an exterior window.Stay in place until law enforcementgives you notice that all immediateclanger is clear.

FIGHT. Your last resort when youare in immediate danger is to defendyourself. Commit to your actions andact aggressively to stop the shooter.Ambushing the shooter togetherwith makeshift weapons such aschairs, fire extinguishers, scissors,and books can distract and disarmthe shooter.

Know that law enforcement's firsttask is to end the incident. They mayhave to pass injured persons alongthe way.

Follow law enforcement'sinstructions and evacuate in thedirection they tell you to.
