The phrase neither of the ast nor of the West suggests centrality and is therefore open to being interpreted as applying to the Tree of Bliss, and the water symbolism mentioned earlier plays an important part in the paradisal motif of Muslim prayer rugs. Often a rug depicts a tree growing out of a vase, symbolising a divine source of water, and on some rugs may be seen aquatic fowls which indicate the proximity of water in paradisal symbolism) Dickie, The Iconography of the Prayer Rug, Oriental Art, Spring, 1972, p. 44. nearing the water // nearing the spring-fountain // denoting the proximity Ba-Ya (12) 2. by : (page 153) bha, A lake, a pond! a strong horse. 21 by by, A city. by by, It is proper, it behoveth. byym (ba-aiym) bar ma- dan, To grapple with adversity, to contend against misfortune. bi-aiyi bay, Full; a door; how--biy (imp. of madan), Come, come hither, approach. In the plural of such words the h is generally, but by no means neces- sarily, dropped before the termination h, as na-h "houses," &c.; 25 while before the termination n it is changed to g, as h-bara "fawn," pl. h-baragn. When taking the sign ifah the h : (page 1484) h, (the 3rd pers. sing. of the affixed pronoun) Her, to, of, from, or by her; (referring to broken plurals) theirs, &c.; (interjection) lo! behold! take! (particle of swearing) by, as: *l hllhi, Not, by God!+--h, Take! give! grant! name of the letter h. hbidat, hbida A hbidat, hbida, A woman who gathers colocynth or the seeds thereof. h h (called hi hauwaz or hi mudau- wara "round h"), the thirty-first letter of the Per-sian-Arabic alphabet, signifies five in arithmetic, and denotes in alma- nacs Thursday and the sign Virgo, also the planet Venus and the moon when bright. It is a slight aspirate, like the h in "hope," either of guttural origin, as in mih, corresponding to the Greek me/gas, or in dah, G. deka, &c., whence the frequent change of the h at the end of Persian nouns into g before the plural termination n and the diminutive affix ak ( zinda, pl. zindagn; jma, dim. jmagak), and the substitution of in Arabic for the final in Persian (A. = P. ); or it is of dental origin, as in mh "moon," S. msa; muhr "seal," S. mudr; gh "place," Z. gtu. Lastly, it is originally labial, as in kh, compared with Zand-Pzand kop and A. qf, in kfat. Accordingly we find it interchangeable with , , , , , , , ,, and . In Persian is of two kinds: mani-fest or sounded (z hir), and concealed or mute (maf). The former is enunciated whether preceded by fatah, ammah, or kasrah, as rah "a road," anduh "grief," farbih "fat" (pl. rahh, anduhh, girihh). In the diminutive it is marked with fatah, as rahak "a little road," anduhak "a trifling sorrow," girihak "a small button." When taking the ifah it is marked with kasrah, as rahi man "my road," anduhi man "My sorrow," girihi man "my button." Mute occurs principally in four kinds of words; (1) in nouns bearing a re-semblance or relationship to another object, as dasta "a handle," from dast "the hand," &c.; (2) in the past active participle, or the sim- ple passive participle, as kushta "having slain" or "slain," &c.; (3) in adjectives, specifying time, which are formed from the words sl "year," mh "month," roz "day," and shab "night," as yak-sla "yearling," du-mha "bi-monthly," har roza "daily," chahr-shaba "quadri-noc- turnal, every fourth night"; (4) in all those Arabic feminines, terminating in , whose has not in Persian changed to , 26 that is, roughly speaking, in feminine ad- jectives, and such nouns as are not abstract sub-stantives. In the plural of such words the h is generally, but by no means neces- sarily, dropped before the termination h, as na-h "houses," &c.; while before the termina-tion n it is changed to g, as h-bara "fawn," pl. h-baragn. When taking the sign ifah the sign hamzah is placed over it, pronounced with kasrah, although the latter sign is not expressed in writing, as nai man "my house." For further particulars consult the Grammar. h h, Have a care! be ready! here! behold! whether? is it so? a slap on the face; white on a bird's face; the plural termination, formerly mostly of things inanimate, as sang "a stone," sang-h "stones," while the plural of animated beings was generally (not exclu-sively) formed by n, as dam "man," pl. dami- yn "men, mankind." In modern Persian, however, the ending h has almost entirely superseded n both for inanimated and ani-mated beings. h A h, (the 3rd pers. sing. of the affixed pronoun) Her, to, of, from, or by her; (referring to broken plurals) theirs, &c.; (interjection) lo! behold! take! (particle of swearing) by, as: *l hllhi, Not, by God!+--h, Take! give! grant! name of the letter h. JIM-YA (13) Note, a possible error: the roots are forcefully interwoven, unlike the rest; thus th first a or Jx and -Yx is put together, might be a false cue. Note, the 'Ya' may be used as an empty vowel, merely for the purpose of the number. , A ac; stad, room; tim m.c.)
