Dear SIEDC Supporter,

By the time you read this newsletter, SIEDC will have successfully completed the 2nd AnnualHealth and Wellness Expo.

The Expo got me thinking about how great a victory Universal Health Care will be for our country.

Back in 1964, Lyndon Johnson kick started the universal health care debate when he launched the Great Society. Since then, for the most part, every President has attempted to “correct” our broken health care system. Finally, President Obama did it.

As always, there are detractors who want to scare us into thinking that Universal Health Care will destroy our economy. Well, if the $182 billion bailout of AIG didn’t destroy our economy, I doubt that Universal Health Care, a fraction of the AIG bill, will hurt us. And let’s face it, the same can be said of the bank bailout of 2008.

As Americans, we should celebrate this American Victory and direct our great minds towards the next challenge, be it education or the economy.

We owe it to ourselves and to the Great Society. Thanks for supporting SIEDC,

Cesar J. ClaroMember, Greater Society

The Expo, presented by the Northfi eld Bank Foundation and Councilman James Oddo, featured over 125 vendors, Keynote Speakers Lisa Oz, Firehouse Chef Joseph T. Bonnano and Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley. Over 2,500 attendees took advantage of the free expo, listening to informative seminars, purchasing healthy food items at the Decker Farms Farmer’s Market, participating in fi tness demonstrations and signing up for free medical screenings. Patti Spratt of Tottenville got screened for glaucoma at the Expo and said “I have no insurance.” “Without this free fair I wouldn’t be able to get this done.”

BROWNFIELD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

In June 2010, the Brownfi eld Development Program was launched as an initiative to continue the eff orts performed in the previous two incarnations of the brownfi eld project.

A total of 54 brownfi eld (remediated, potential, and in development) sites have been identifi ed through previous research, current state and federal designations, site visits and interviews.

SIEDC has researched and visited all 24 state and federally designated brownfi eld sites on the island and:

• SIEDC has chosen 12 high priority sites for incentive work and development and sale.

• SIEDC has prepared and disseminated a brochure discussing the benefi ts of the Brownfi eld Development Project which includes information on brownfi elds, program goals, community benefi ts and outreach initiatives, SIEDC’s role in providing assistance and guidance, a list of incentive programs on multiple government levels, information on how to initiate a Brownfi eld Cleanup Agreement, and an the importance and need for an environmental consultant.

• SIEDC has engaged in a cooperative relationship with environmental consulting fi rms, Vita Nuova LLC, Hydro Tech Environmental, and the Construction Safety Agency of New York.

Before After

Over two dozen former industrial sites thoughout the island are currently under analysis by SIEDC’s Brownsite Development Program.

NEW WORKFORCE 1/BIZ SOLUTIONS CTRThursday, September 30th, the Staten Island Career Center and NYC Business Solutions Center held its Grand Opening of the new Workforce 1 and NYC Business Solutions Center, located at 120 Stuyvesant Place. The entire space is made of sustainable materials, including bamboo fl ooring and energy-effi cient lighting. Inside job-seekers can fi nd one-on-one career advice, help in preparing a résumé, and access to job search databases. In addition to the job placement services off ered, there are several services off ered to businessowners as well. All of the services are completely free through the program administered by the city’s Department of Small Business Services.

Owners of businesses of all sizes, and all stages, can take courses on developing business plans and marketing strategies, seek pro-bono legal assistance and, if they’ve been turned down for a bank loan, apply to non-traditional, non-profi t lenders.

The NYC Business Solutions Center will help businesses access quality candidates who are pre-screened to meet their needs, which can save time and energy otherwise spent wading through a heap of job applications for candidates who aren’t the right fi t.

SBS Commissioner Robert Walsh wants to spread the word to businesses across the Island about the resources available. Most important, he wants the public to know that this is a far cry from job centers of years ago. Those he likened to “a maze of bureaucracy,” and “more like a police state than a place where you could get assistance and help.”

To fi nd out more about how NYC Business Solutions can help your company start, operate, or expand, visit www.nyc.gov/nycbusiness.

MORTGAGESI Mortgage Group1678 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10305Contact: Jennifer RahnerPhone: (718) 979-7700x269Email: [email protected]: www.simortgagegroup.comNo delays. No Nonsense. We make getting a mortgage loan easy! Isn’t it great how you can go to a car dealership, test drive a few cars, pick out the one you want, and drive it home that same day? You can’t do that with a new house. You need someone on your side when you’re buying a home. Who makes sure you aren’t doing paperwork you don’t have to do. Who speeds up some of the steps you can’t avoid. You need a “blocker,” clearing the way of obstacles as you head toward your goal. That’s where we come in! When you’ve picked out your dream home, the paperwork and hoops to jump through with disclosures, appraisals, inspections, title insurance, escrow, notaries and more can be overwhelming. Many people think their real estate agent will help them through a confusing mortgage process. Your real estate agent is looking out for you, no question about it. But it’s your mortgage lender who wants almost all of those steps and all that paperwork. We “run interference” with the mortgage lender who’s going to make you your loan. We can’t snap our fi ngers and make buying a home like buying a car, but we can make it easier and smoother.

SIEDC FOCUS

Dario began his career in Finance in 1996 after graduating with a Bachelors of Science from the Wharton School of Business. Initially, Dario worked as a securities trader focusing mainly on companies in emerging industries. His passion for entrepreneurship led him to fi nance and consult several start-up businesses in addition to trading during market hours.

As time went on, Dario decided to focus on the consulting end of the business and joined MetLife to learn the protection portfolio. He believes that proper consulting is derived from the discovery phase,

in which each client’s unique priorities and goals are clearly defi ned.

In 2009, Dario’s desire to be independent and awareness of the importance of proper tax planning in every component of business, led him to partner with a long time friend Walter Daszkowski of the successful Staten Island accounting fi rm Daszkowski, Thompkins and Weg. Dario became a majority partner in Daszkowksi, Sisti, Pompeo & Fischer, a full service insurance and benefi t consulting fi rm and is a fi nancial representative for Genworth Financial Securities.
