Saturday, June 30 – Wednesday, July 4, 11am – 11pm• Libby Garrison, Marin County Department of Cultural ServicesJoin us again for the beloved Marin County Fair! This year’s Fair celebrates the values we hold near and dear — inclusiveness, equality, diversity, and of course…FUN! We’ll celebrate the arts, agricul-ture, the environment and our community. As always, there are carnival rides, free concerts by The Beach Boys, Los Lobos, LeAnn Rimes, Eddie Money, Michael Franti, and more, and fireworks every night. This year’s Fair celebrates inclusiveness, equal-ity, diversity, and community. Themed exhibit categories will include decorated flags and banners, baked goods and culinary contests from around the world, global photography, and more. “We developed the theme as an opportunity to celebrate everyone who lives in our community. The Fair showcases the best of what we each have to offer, whether a community poem, a 5th grader’s art project, an amazing hip hop dancer, a grandmother’s award-winning quilt or three generations of a family working on an “art in the spot” project,” said Director of Cultural Services Gabriella C. Calicchio. “At the Fair we don’t care what your country of origin is, what color skin you have, what your religious or political beliefs are, we care about creating a safe space for everyone to leave their worries behind and have FUN!”As always, the Marin County Fair prides itself on being the Greenest County Fair on Earth with its solar-powered carousel and stage, commit-ment to water conservation, and a record of 94 percent waste diversion to compost and recycling. Come celebrate the arts, agriculture, the environment, and our commu-nity, and join us at the Fair.

Marin County Fair — All for One & Fun for All!

Hello Santa Venetia! There are lots of things taking place in our neighborhood as we move further into the year. Let me first say I hope everyone has some plans and will enjoy something fun and exciting this summer.JCC -The SVNA recently held a special meeting where the representatives from the JCC shared their plans for expansion / upgrade of the JCC property. The meeting

was well-attended and Santa Venetia neighbors were asked to give feed-back from the presentation. Many questions and concerns were raised – the biggest concern has to do with the possibility of increased traffic congestion. This was the first of what will be several more opportunities to respond. Stay tuned!SVNA Picnic – The Labor Day Picnic is the SVNA’s signature event. Many Santa Venetians / SVNA members have really enjoyed the Picnic the last almost 20 years. For several reasons, we are considering making changes to the event. We are seeking people with fresh ideas and volunteers to help out. We hope to hear from you as we consider changes. Contact us through the web – or call me 415-578-2580Dan Monte for Assembly – Santa Venetia has our own Dan Monte running for State Assembly. Dan is a long-time SVNA member and very active in the community. I highly recommend checking out what Dan is all about.

JCC Pre-applicationAs many of you may already know, the Jewish Com-munity Center (JCC) has filed a pre-application with

the County regarding some changes they hope to make on their campus. If you attended the SVNA meeting May 15, you will most likely be famil-iar with this information, however, if you missed the meeting, I thought it would be helpful to lay out the process for the County consideration of what the JCC is putting forward. At this point, the JCC has not yet submitted a formal application. In-stead, they have requested a “pre-application” review in order to get pre-liminary feedback from the County’s Community Development Agency and the community before they formally submit an application and set the process into motion. The JCC has stated that it intends to request a rezoning of the 13-acre site located on N. San Pedro Road, to facilitate future land use planning, replacing the current patchwork zoning designations with a single parcel Master Plan. The JCC campus includes Congregation Rodef Sholom, Brandeis Marin School and the Osher Jewish Community Center. They will propose some enhancement of current activities and uses on the campus, as well as addressing “evolving needs” some time in the future. Current proposals for enhancement include replacing the 56 year old synagogue, updating early childhood education facilities and adding a third pool for children and families. Longer range plans for “evolving needs” would include senior housing and additional classroom space for Brandeis Marin.Any actual development of such proposals would require approval of future planning applications. As part of this process, Community De-velopment Agency will circulate their plans to various departments and service agencies as well as the SVNA for initial feedback. Representatives from the JCC came to the community meeting May 15th to present their preliminary proposal and get input and comments. The JCC continues to work with neighbors including the County of Marin, Venetia Valley School, Marin School, Parnow Friendship House, BayMarin Community Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the residents of Santa Venetia to mitigate congestion. The Master Plan will include new proposals to minimize traffic and parking impacts and enhance pedestrian, cycling and vehicle safety to improve travel along North San Pedro Road.Once an application is officially filed, there will be numerous opportuni-ties for the SVNA and community members to weigh in: during the initial review for “completeness;” during the Environmental Quality Assessment review process; and of course, at public hearings at the Planning Com-mission and Board of Supervisors. Policies in the Santa Venetia Com-munity Plan call for an applicant-initiated community outreach effort “prior to submittal of formal applications and throughout the process” for development on large properties such as the JCC, so there will likely be additional meetings with SVNA and interested neighbors at appropri-ate points.Earlier this year, the San Rafael School District and the JCC entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance pedestrian, cyclist, and ve-hicle safety, and to improve traffic conditions on North San Pedro Road. Any Master Plan will include new proposals to further minimize traffic and parking impacts, all of which will undergo comprehensive County environmental review. If you have any questions, you may contact Christine Gimmler, who has been assigned to the pre-application stage. No one at the County is more familiar with the Santa Venetia community than Christine, who managed the development of the Santa Venetia Community Plan. Her email is [email protected].

What Can You Do for the SVNA?

What Can the SVNA Do for You?

CSA #18 Advisory Board is made up of neighbors that volunteer to be the go-between with the neighborhood and the county, working together to prioritize projects for our neighborhood parks. The CSA #18 AB is here to advocate community issues, desires, and needs as they relate to our parks. If you have questions or concerns, these are the people to talk to:JOYCE CLEMENTS is delighted to represent the community in Parks and open Space. As a kid she played every day at an Arlington, VA, play-ground, beginning her long softball “career” as a catcher for the “Wood-row Wilson” Wizards, and even becoming the playground “Queen” for one distinguished summer. Joyce’s first fulltime job after college was as a District Supervisor of recreation for the Prince George’s County MD Recreation Dept. Subsequently Joyce’s education and work have led her through interesting paths that culminated in the arts. Joyce can be found any M, W and F In the early hours of the morning playing pickleball at the Pueblo Park court with a fun and energetic group of neighbors — come join us!LINDA LEVEY grew up in Marin County and settled in SV in 1989. Since her teens, she has volunteered and been active in the community, so it was a natural progression to volunteer for and then join the SVNA Board, shortly after moving here. She has served on the CSA #18 Advisory Board since 2008. She has also participated for years on the McPhail’s Working Group, working towards the dream of getting that site as a park for the neighborhood. Having a big, beautiful, and relentless dog nudges her away from her computer to get her out to enjoy walks on the levee and neighborhood parks.KAREN THOMPSON moved to Santa Venetia 30 years ago. Very quickly, she fell in love with the area, hiking and biking in open space and spend-ing countless hours at Pueblo Park with her children and now grand-children. Karen has been a member of the CSA#18 advisory board for 3 years, joining soon after retiring from a long career as a registered nurse. She is also currently working as a volunteer at China Camp. She enjoys advocating for our parks, because she believes that safe and available open space and green areas are essential for a strong and cohesive com-munity. ELLEN STEIN has lived in SV since 2001 and is the newest board mem-ber. After she retired from the San Francisco Fire Department, she began getting more involved in community matters. In addition to CSA#18, she also serves on the CSA#6 board and Friends of the Civic Center Library. Ellen enjoys kayaking and paddle boarding with her Goldens in this neighborhood she calls paradise.GINA TUOSTO HAGEN lives with her husband and two young children on the east end of the neighborhood. Her family loves going on adven-tures through the neighborhood and China Camp, enjoying the diversity of people that live here as well as the incredible diversity of nature surrounding us. She has chosen to volunteer on the SVNA and CSA #18 boards as a way to give back to her community. “Nowadays, it’s a rarity to see children out and about without a grownup, our parks serve as a meeting place for families, folks out to walk the dog or those just out for a stroll that want to connect with their neighbors.”

We recently lost our neighbor, long-time SVNA member and community volunteer, Art Reichert.

His contributions to our neighborhood were many. You can read his Marin IJ obit here: url: https://tinyurl.com/ydh63gxc

Arthur George “Art” Reichert November 29, 1950–April 28, 2018

Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream. Pick up all the trash you see. Leave the river clean!

Thanks to his excellent care team at Kaiser, Art beat cancer, but suc-cumbed to a series of infections. He died peacefully with his wife Elaine at his side. Hospice by the Bay provided wonderful comfort care through his final two months. Art’s warm heart, quirky humor and sweet nature endeared him to many. He was always busy. He served on our local Flood Zone 7 board until he used his auditing skills to question where our special flood taxes were actually being spent. Susan Adams abruptly fired him from FZ7 rather than answer. He was also active in the Santa Venetia Neigh-borhood Association. Art loved to hike, bicycle and canoe, especially on Gallinas Creek, riv-ers and the Bay. For many years he organized creek cleanups and was active in the Gallinas Watershed Council and many other community service projects. He served as president of GWC, but his real passion was keeping the Creek clean and healthy. No mention of Art’s life would be complete without discussing his love of cars and fast driving. When he met Elaine, he had a red CRX. He soon had it repainted dark gray so as to be less conspicuous as he zipped along the highways. He replaced the CRX with a more sedate Ford Fo-cus. Though he modified it in various ways, that was never his favorite car. Thankfully, a year before his cancer was discovered he bought an older Audi TT. Although it spent many days and dollars at the mechan-ics, the joy it brought to him is priceless.Born in Buffalo to Art and Dorothy Reichert, Art slowly migrated west until he came to work at Fireman’s Fund. In 1989 he met Elaine Gilmer whom he married in 1991. They had many wonderful adventures together, camping, canoeing and square dancing. He is also survived by his sister Dottie, her husband Joe and their children Jeremy and Amie Lou who all live in Connecticut. His cousin Karen also survives him.A memorial gathering to celebrate Art’s life was held at 4pm May 18 at First Presbyterian Church in San Rafael. [People were requested to wear festive clothes to this well-attended memorial. In Art’s memory, pick up trash wherever you see it. In lieu of flowers, donations to MALT.org or gallinaswatershed.org]A note from Judy Schriebman of the Gallinas Watershed Council (GWC): Art was a founding member of GWC but more than that, a long term environmentalist whose passion for the creek, and keeping it clean, helped many people see the value and beauty of Gallinas Creek and nature. The kayak and canoe trips he took people on were greatly en-joyed. Art was relentless in his pursuit of the truth in where the money went when he was there. Just like he was relentless in keeping the creek clean.

Memorial for dear friend and neighbor Art Reichert

SVNA Community Meeting – New Date: Wednesday, June 6, 2018 JCC will hand out freebies; Marin County Fair will hand out prizes! Many of our SVNA Community Members have asked for an alternate meeting night, as Tuesday is not convenient. Well, here is your chance! Tuesday is voting day so we’ve changed our meeting to Wednesday.Join us Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at 7pm as we try to keep Santa Venetia social, fun, and informed. Iris Lax and Linda Bolt, with the Osher Marin JCC, will join us with information about their summer offerings and will be handing out FREE tickets and passes their Summer Nights Outdoor Concert Series and their Fitness & Aquatics Center, plus a special offer for Summer Camp, and a discount to their Café for everyone attending.Next, we will have a presentation from Nizza Sequeira at Marin/So-noma Mosquito & Vector Control. Members have been asking for more information about their services for quite a while, so bring your questions about mosquitoes, ticks, yellow jackets, rodents, and more. And finally, Charlie Barboni, Manager of the Marin County Fair will join us with information for you about the upcoming Marin County Fair. As well, they have generously donated two prize packages (including a poster and 2 tickets to the Fair) that will be won by two lucky SVNA members in a door raffle.Meetings include updates (as available) regarding Land Use, our Water-shed, Neighborhood Beautification, Social Activities, Traffic, Parks, etc… as time allows. Meetings are held at the Korean Presbyterian Church, 635 Adrian Way, at Rosal Way. All residents welcome.

2018 National Night Out Potluck: Tuesday, August 7, 6:30 - Hold the DateThis was a great success when we participated in previous years, so we’re planning on doing it again. Neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of special events – we’ll be having a pot-luck. So join us to “break bread” and meet your neighbors. If you have never participated in National Night Out, it’s an opportunity for our neighborhood and local law enforcement to come together for one night and socialize. This public safety celebration allows you to meet the deputies who patrol your neighborhood and promotes crime aware-ness among neighbors. Residents in neighborhoods throughout San Ra-

fael and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening with neighbors and police. We will also invite the San Rafael Fire Department to join us again, as they did last year. With the Sheriff’s Department and the Fire Department, it’s quite an informative evening. As well, this will be an opportunity for further discussion and planning regard-ing our (hope to have) Santa Venetia Crime Watch Committee. For more information about the pro-gram: https://natw.org/about.

• Nanni Wurl, 415-472-3269The April Median Workday was an event for the median crew since we had not been able to work for 2 months! The weeds took advantage of our absence. Carl & Helen Sitchler had already started on Friday in front of the Convalescent Home. They finished this median on Saturday.Working in front of the three homes were Carolyn Byrne, Dennis Bortoli (weed-whacking), and Wayne Lechner. I had hoped we could work on the next one too, but too many weeds. If anybody doubted my fanati-cism for the Medians, they saw it Saturday with my walker. Determined, I started working on my Median and hope to have it in shape by the next workday. The Crew would like to thank Beverly Busher and Laurie Steese for the donations. As always, we love it. The Crew would also like to thank Hank Franzini for again donating him home-grown tomato plants. We are looking forward to the harvesting. The May Workday was a dream come true. Our little group had given up hope for more help a long time ago. But this wokday was different. Anybody who had ever been on a very fixed budget and then, out of the blue, got a substantial amount of money could understand our feelings. We normally are no more than seven people and very often less. Every-body was so pleased to see Peter Fisher & Andrea Hedin, David Knox, Scott McDaniel, and Mary Carol Winkler. We were grateful for the green cans and for Shelley Cooper and Arlene Davis who picked up a sheet full of weeds. We had three men weed-whacking which helped to make this median look great (beauty is in the eyes of the beholder). The regular Crew con-sisted of Carolyn Byrne, Dennis Bortoli, Eliseo Garcia, Wayne Lechner, Carl & Helen Sitchler, and Yours Truly. This Median is our nemesis and we try to stay away if possible – but this time we had lots of help.I know everybody has a different idea about what to plant in their front yard. Trees close to the sidewalk are not a good idea. Low hanging branches can be hazardous to somebody’s health. Please be kind and provide free access for pedestrians. Thanks. And finally, we will need more help for the Picnic – setting up and help-ing in the food tent. Call me.

March Community Meeting Update:SVNA Prepares For Wildfire Season• Alison Fuller, 415-816-0715We were fortunate to have as speaker at our Community Meeting on March 27, Christie Neil from the Marin County Fire Department. After 20 years with the National Forests and another 10 with the National Parks, Christie is now Battalion Chief of the MCFD Vegetation & Fuels Manage-ment Program, who better to help us prepare our homes and gardens for the wildfire season, which now seems to extend year-round? Best of all, she is willing to make house calls! You can reach her office in Woodacre at 415-473-3759. (See Community Meeting photo below.)There are excellent brochures available from County Fire and also FIRE-Safe Marin explaining how to “harden” your house and surround it with the 100 feet of “defensible space” required by law. You can (and should!) obtain “Homeowner’s Guide to Fire Safe Practices in Marin County” by contacting www.FireSafeMarin.org, 415-570-4376. To start with, protect yourself and family by registering at www.AlertMarin.org to receive voice, text and email notifications for evacuations and emergencies. From Christie’s visit I learned to get rid of the flammable native plants that like to landscape my property, especially anything with dead areas, such as understories e.g. coyote bush and wild blackberry vines. Dried grass or other flammable debris should be cleared from the ground and trees should be “limbed up” to 6 to 10 feet (or 1/3 of the crown height) off the ground. Of course, you don’t want trees growing over your roof or close to your windows, but what you can’t see can hurt you, too: leaves and needles in your rain gutters.Hardest to defend against are the embers that can be blown in from a fire miles away during a wildfire, especially if accompanied by strong winds as was the case last October. Christie recommends covering vent openings that may provide access to your attic or basement with 1/8” or finer screening. Decks and balconies should be boxed in with fire resistant materials. Roofs should be non-flammable and kept clear of leaves. For now, I have a tree-care team coming next week to begin the yard work. Feel free to call me.

Update on CSA #6 – Dredging

• Ellen SteinIt was impressive to see the several neighbors attending the last meeting in April. We discussed a couple different options that the community needs to think about. We can dredge sooner (next year if all goes well) if we deposit our dredging spoils at the Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District. The disadvantage is that the cost is higher. If we wait to dredge 1 or 2 years later and deposit the dredging spoils at the McInnis Marsh Restora-tion Project, there may be some grants available costing less. Disadvan-tages include more growth to mitigate and a longer wait time. It will be important for neighbors to attend the next meeting to decide which way to proceed.

• Judy Schriebman, MemberGallinas Watershed Council (GWC) is pursuing Floating Islands Phase 2, which is to increase the size of the floating vegetation in order to effectively treat the water and reduce the problems that beset it each summer. We have met with Damon Connolly and his aide Mary Sackett, with Melissa Nelson and Diana Almendariz of the Cultural Conservancy (bearers of Native American Traditional Ecological Knowledge) and with Max Korten, Ari and Michon of Marin County Parks and Open Space. Our next meeting is with Gabrielle of county’s cultural resources and David Speer of the Frank Lloyd Wright commission. Every one of these government agencies has differing jurisdictions over the look and management of the Civic Center, which makes putting a project together rather challenging. However, our first phase of Floating Islands demonstrated that they work well, are low maintenance, aestheti-cally improve the lagoon and create additional habitat. A larger island, or floating vegetation strip around the edge, and bioswales on the land-ward side, could all be used collectively to help restore the water quality. As always, we are continuing to work with the city of San Rafael to have upstream Gallinas Creek recognized as a creek and restored to some level of functionality. The city’s recent spraying of RoundUp in that area brought out dozens of activists opposed to this toxic product. As a result, San Rafael put a moratorium on the use of it, but will need additional help and education to ban it completely. They will still use it on the medi-ans, unlike the county, which has found ways to ban its usage in most ar-eas. GWC also supports the work of CleanMarin, in their efforts to reduce trash throughout Marin and YardSmart, which is actively campaigning to reduce the use of rodenticides that harm wildlife. If you care about the watershed, please pitch in and join Clean Marin, or GWC or the YardSmart campaign. Every action helps create a better environment for all of us.Links: https://www.gallinaswatershed.org • http://cleanmarin.org https://www.yardsmartmarin.org

A Public Meeting was held 11/15/17 (view the video here: https://youtu.be/LCIXo8IRbSY) and work continues on the Draft agreement. Previously, we were told this project was in CEQA/Environmental Review but it is currently show-ing as Status: Expired. I checked with the County and was provided information showing the 1992 approval for building on two parcels at 18 Sunny Oaks and according to the plans, one parcel is #9 Silver Oak Court (and I believe the other is #5). If this is of interest and you want copies of this information, please email. >>> SVNA Contact: Linda Levey, [email protected] Road/Vacant Lots – Plans were submitted in June 2017 showing access to one parcel off North San Pedro Road and the other off Upper Road. At that time, owner Mark Menges applied for a lot-line adjust-ment with plans for two single-family residential lots. Per the Planner,

the lot-line adjustment was approved in August. Building plans have not been submitted yet, but the next step should be Design Review. IMAGINE IF...Angel Island was home to a high-rise hotel...

Bolinas Lagoon was a yacht harbor...

The bird-rich waters of Richardson Lagoon were filled with land and 1600 homes...

A four-lane highway connected Central Marin to 125,000 residents of West Marin...

without Marin Conservation League, Marin would be a different place.

Dog Walker Watch• Linda LeveyThere have been a lot of reports of crime in our neighborhood. We hope to rekindle interest in our Santa Venetia Crime Watch Committee and as well – isn’t this a great idea? - https://tinyurl.com/ybab22o7. “What Is Dog Walker Watch? According to the Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA, there are over seventy five million dog owners across the nation. That’s dozens, if not hundreds, of neighbors walking their dog throughout the community at all times of the day, all days of the week, in all weather conditions, who are often preoccupied with texting, chatting, emailing and listening to music. Dog Walker Watch encourages these neighbors to assist local law enforcement as extra eyes and ears while out walking their dog. The program enhances the partnership between police and community while providing re-sources for neighbors to be more aware and how to effectively observe and report suspicious activity.”This seems like it would be a great idea for our neighborhood. If you are interested in participating and/or running with this idea, let us know!

Losing Our Friends and Neighbors

We have a couple of coyotes living here. (See top photo.) There’s a young, healthy one and then an old, scraggly one. They’ve been in our front yard (sad because the quail, rabbits and ducks have been hanging out) and the older one has

been seen at McPhail’s. I stopped the car to take a picture of him lying in the road and he stood up, staring at me. As I drove down the road, I saw him lie down again – warming himself on the on the hot pavement.Flood Control Zone 7 (FCZ#7 Newsletter – Click here to read the latest: https://tinyurl.com/yc4ltz87)Memorial Day just passed but we didn't want to forget to thank those who served.
