1101 - 8:00 a.m. Welcome to Seussville – The Land of Dr. Seuss (Jen Bernitt) There is much more to Dr. Seuss than Cat in the Hat!  Oh, the Places You’ll Go this week by constructing parachutes and mazes, or If I Ran the Zoo, what would your animals look like?  With Hop on Pop we will experiment with rhyme and how you can make a bouncy ball bouncy.  Of course, we need to create Oobleck and maybe some other slimy solutions to make Bartholomew proud.  Put your red and white striped hats on and together we will create, read, perform, draw, and experiment all things Seuss.

1102 - 10:15 a.m. Planets 101: Amazing Astronomy (Jen Bernitt)Calling all budding astronauts – let’s blast off for a week-long study of our planets. Science experiments with planets’ colors, rotations, and ring placement will be a blast, literally. STEM challenges for the week will include launching a straw rocket and constructing a solar system model with toilet paper. Do not forget this important saying before you come to class: My Very Excited Mother Just Served Us Nachos! 1103 - 1:30 p.m. Sensational Sensory Science (Molly Myers)Which of the five senses is the most important? Which one do we use the most? During this class, we will explore five different experiences and activities using our five senses and limiting our bodies to four, three, two, or even one sense. What happens when you can see something, but cannot smell it? What happens when you can feel something, but cannot see it? Through these sensory experiences, we’ll discover so much about what our bodies’ senses can do!

2101 - 8:00 am Jurassic Jewels: Triceratops, Velociraptor, Stegosaurus, Oh, My! (Christy Gardner) We all know that recycling is important, but did you know it can also be a way to be artistic? Let’s discover some unexpected surprises as we uncover our inspiration to make art from recycled objects (both modern and historic). Each day we will create one-of-a-kind masterpieces, so be ready to put your mind and your creativity to work!

2102 - 10:15 am Calling All Artists: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle! (Christy Gardner) We all know that recycling is important, but did you know it can also be a way to be artistic? Let’s discover some unexpected surprises as we uncover our inspiration from recycled objects to make art! In this class, we’ll make art projects out of recyclable materials, both modern and historic. Each day we will create one-of-a-kind masterpieces, so be ready to put your mind and your creativity to work!

2103 - 1:30 pm Around the World in Five Days! (Briannah Harrison) Only at World of Wonder can you travel the world in just five days! Exploring the seven continents has never been more exciting! Do you ever wonder what going to first grade might look like in Africa? What about in Europe? In this class, we will complete lots of hands-on activities to gain a better understanding of life across the globe. Art, music, and social science topics will be emphasized along this journey!

GRADE 1

1201 - 8:00 a.m. Travel Through Time with Some Familiar Faces (Julie Gianessi) Hop in our time machine as we travel to the past with some well-known historical dolls. We’ll visit the late 1700s with the Nez Perce tribe, learn all about the Victorian time period, experience what life was like during the Great Depression, and even stop in the groovy 1970s! You’ll have a great time learning what life was like during these different moments in our past, and we’ll stay busy making crafts, welcoming special guests, learning a dance, hosting a tea party, and more.

1202 - 8:00 a.m. Mystery Doug is the Man! (Lori Cottingham) Why do we get goosebumps? Why does soap make bubbles? Can a turtle live outside of its shell? If you ever had a question about science or nature, then Mystery Doug is there for you! In this exciting class we will learn all about Mystery Doug, visit his intriguing website, and learn about “Mystery Science.” Each day we will generate our own questions to ask Mystery Doug, research our own questions to answer on our own, and present our findings to the class at the end of the week. If you like learning new things and finding answers to questions, this is the class for you!

1203 - 10:15 a.m. Active Artisans: Exploring an Artist a Day (Julie Gianessi) An artist a day keeps the boredom away! Art is all about creativity, courage, and collaboration. Get ready to be very creative in this class, as we discover a different artist each day. As we investigate various artists, we’ll take our creativity to the canvas. We will be using paint, so be sure to wear old clothes or bring an extra shirt you can use as a smock. It’s sure to be an imaginative week in this class!

1204 - 10:15 a.m. 3D: Dazzling Dimensional Designers (Connie Stromberger) Express your dazzling ideas in 3-dimensional designs! In this class, we will create inspiring works of art and explore an array of art materials and methods. We’ll also learn about an assortment of 3-D art, including carving, sculpting, and collages. Through hands-on activities, we’ll even explore the art principles of famous artists such as Jasper Johns and Alberto Giacometti. By the end of the week, you’ll dazzle your friends with your new 3-D knowledge!

1205 - 1:30 p.m. Exploring Native American Culture (Patty Lawless) Did you know that both the city of Peoria and the state of Illinois are named after Native American tribes? How did the Native Americans influence the way we live today? In this class, we will take part in an historical adventure to bring the Native American culture to life at World of Wonder through stories, crafts, and traditions.

1206 - 1:30 p.m. Superhero Workshop (Colin Crippen) Superheroes are dominating the world! They are on television, in movies, books, cartoons, and more! Now it’s your turn to design your own superheroes! We will use our language arts skills to explore and analyze many questions about your superheroes. We’ll also use our math and technology skills to bring our superheroes to life! What powers do they have? What planet do they come from? What do they look like? How did they acquire their skills? Do they have weaknesses? By the end of the week, you’ll have designed your own superhero, written a story about your hero’s background, and even created a likeness of the hero. Join us on this super adventure!

2201 - 8:00 am No GPS?! Where in the World Are We? (Kara Girsch) When my grandfather was walking five miles to school, uphill both ways, in the snow, he didn’t have the luxury of using Google Maps to find a quicker (and less strenuous) route. In this class, we will discover cartography, the craft of mapmaking. The first maps were made by hand by painting the information on parchment paper. Today, cartographers make the most modern maps with computers using specialized mapping software. In this class, we’ll learn how maps are made – both traditionally and in the age of technology.

2202 - 8:00 am Riddle Me This: Can You Solve and Escape? (Carolyn Sutton) Get ready to puzzle and puzzle ‘til your puzzler is sore.  A new villain has come to World of Wonder and will stop at nothing until she takes over the world.  This villain is known for elaborate traps and riddles, so it will be up to us to put together all the clues in order to escape the classroom and put a stop to her evil plans!

2203 - 10:15 a.m. Timeless Tales with a Twist: Fractured Fairy Tales (Christine Hill) Ever wonder what would happen if Red Riding Hood weren’t quite so naive, or the pigs got smarter, or Cinderella stood up to her evil stepmother? Timeless fairy tales are timeless for a reason, but every so often, we need something different. That’s where fractured fairy tales come in! In this class, we will read alternative versions of some of the classic fairy tales you know and love. Was Cinderella nice? Was the Big Bad Wolf just misunderstood? Was Prince Charming all that charming? Be ready to read, listen, watch, and write your very own fractured fairy tales!

2204 - 10:15 a.m. Is It Magic … Or Chemistry? (El Higus) Do you like things that go “boom,” “bang,” “pow,” and “zing?” Join us as we roll up our sleeves and get down and dirty in the science lab. Throughout the week we will investigate, observe, and predict several hypotheses. By the end of the week, we will all be certified experts on several chemistry concepts that may have once seemed magical at first glance!

2205 - 1:30 p.m. You Sunk My Battleship! (Trent Halpin) Can you crack the code with deductive and inductive reasoning? In this class, we’ll use these methods and more to solve riddles and hidden messages. Each day, we’ll receive a coded message to solve, learn about the various codes used around the world, and create our own codes to create a scavenger hunt for other students to solve. Put on your thinking caps, because your brains will be busy!

2206 - 1:30 p.m. Women Who Have Changed the World (Christy Gardner) Inspiring trailblazers, legendary heroes, and fascinating pioneers. These are just a few adjectives to describe the women who have changed the planet! In this class, we’ll learn about some fascinating women who, no matter their chosen fields, have left enduring legacies for current and future generations. Be ready to be inspired by these women who broke those glass ceilings with their work.

1401 - 8:00 a.m. Make It Work on WOW’s Project Runway (Kara Girsch) One day you’re in. The next day you’re out. At WOW’s Project Runway, we’ll focus on fashion design, pattern making, and production of outfits. We will learn all about the design process, from making a pattern from a sketch and turning the pattern into an actual garment. With different fashion missions every day, a strong sense of creativity is a must. We’ll even have a Project Runway show on Friday, with special guest judges!

1402 - 8:00 a.m. LEGO® Lab (Connie Stromberger) In LEGO® Lab, you will combine your imagination, knowledge, and problem-solving skills to create a variety of objects. We will use LEGOs® to learn about engineering, math, art, collaboration, public speaking, and more. We will put our minds to work each day as we take on such challenges as building a bridge that can support a cup of pennies, a wall that can support its creator, furniture that is fit for a minifig, and everything in between. While all activities will encourage problem-solving skills and creativity, we will take a little time each day to build without restriction and see just how creative you can be!

1403 - 10:15 a.m. A Wonderful Week at Hogwarts (Kara Girsch) What can happen in a week in the Wizarding World? Anything! Prepare to embark on a journey of all things Harry Potter, from sorting to spells, broomsticks to robes, wizarding food, and even magical creatures. We’ll immerse ourselves in the world created by author J.K. Rowling, so be ready to put on your thinking cap, unleash your creative mind, and free your imagination as we pass through Platform 9 ¾ on the way to Hogwarts!

1404 - 10:15 a.m. Rev up Your Writing with Figurative Language (Patty Lawless) Figurative language refers to the color we use to amplify our writing. It takes an ordinary statement and makes it bold. It gently alludes to something without directly stating it. It is a great way to improve your writing with a more creative tone. We will learn about these literary techniques through writing, fun activities, and engaging in the irony that is figurative language. In fact, during our week of figurative language fun, it just may end up “raining cats and dogs.”

1405 - 1:30 p.m. Pixels and Presentations: Be a Proponent of PowerPoint (Kara Girsch) Way back in 1990, Microsoft® released the PowerPoint presentation program. It allows users to create anything from basic slide shows to complex presentations. In today’s technology-driven world, it is imperative to have skills to use PowerPoint. By combining our language arts skills with our technology ingenuity, we will learn how to give our presentations a “visual kick” by making them easy for the audience to understand, enjoy, and remember long after our presentation is over.

1406 - 1:30 p.m. American Art: A History of Our Country’s Artists (John Wetterauer) Abstract Expressionist artists reinvented abstract painting (and other media) by forming a distinctly American style. For many artists, it was an expression of freedom. In this class, we will learn about several American Abstract Expressionist artists who used their talent to create social awareness towards basic human rights. We will also have the opportunity to create our own individual art pieces that are reflective of the artists’ techniques and genres.

GRADES 4-52401 - 8:00 a.m. DNA:Definition,Discovery, and Descendants (Christine Hill) What do a human, a rose, and a bacterium have in common? Each of these things – along with every other organism on Earth – contains the molecular instructions for life, called deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA. Encoded within this DNA are the directions for traits as diverse as the color of a person’s eyes, the scent of a rose, and the way in which bacteria infect a lung cell. Have you ever wondered what makes us tick? In this class, we will explore the world of DNA and how it makes us who we are. We will also research our own ancestry and trace the roots in our family trees.

2402 - 8:00 a.m. Hip-Hop, History, and Hamilton (Kelly Moyer) “1776. New York City.” These are the opening lines of one of the catchy tunes from the Broadway smash, Hamilton. In this class, we will dive into the history, the music, and the inspiration behind Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical about one of America’s founding fathers. We’ll take a deep look at issues such as immigration, all while analyzing lyrics, rhyme schemes, and the hip-hop format. We’ll also combine our new-found knowledge of Hamilton with our own creativity to present a final group project based on another historical figure.

2403 - 10:15 a.m. Nuts and Bolts: Drawing Our Inventions (Dana Johnson) Through creativity and inventive thought, we’ll learn about one of the key elements of art: value. We will put our pencils to work and learn about the importance of light and light source by drawing cogs and gears, nuts and bolts. We will work both collaboratively and individually to produce works of art, and our grand finale will put these artistic behaviors to the test as we come up with our own drawn invention that will change how we do everyday tasks.

2404 - 10:15 a.m. Game Day: Not-So “Bored” Games (Carolyn Sutton) For thousands of years, board games have been a source of entertainment for people across the globe. Did you know that evidence of board games pre-dates the development of writing? In this class, we will investigate board games in depth, discover why some are successful, and others not so much.  We will analyze all the aspects of several games to determine what makes each one interesting, challenging, and even fun to play. We will use all of that information to create and play our very own board games!

2405 - 1:30 p.m. Use the Force: Technology of Star Wars (Christine Hill) “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…“ Star Wars has been a pop culture mainstay since 1977 – long before you were born! In this class, we will explore the mysteries of the Star Wars universe, including the Jedi, the Empire, the Rebellion, and more! Get ready to fly through the galaxy and determine if any of the technology we see on the big screen really is feasible. “May the Force Be With You!”

2406 - 1:30 p.m. WOW’s Shark Tank (El Higus) Calling all future entrepreneurs! During this five-day crash course, you will learn the ins and outs of becoming a successful business owner. Do you have ideas for creative inventions rattling around in your head? If so, you’ll have the chance to bring those ideas to life. You’ll surely walk away with the skills and knowledge to be the next “big” small business owner.

1601 - 8:00 a.m. Real News About Fake News (Trent Halpin) Words have an incredible impact on everyone, so let’s dive deeper into determining if a source is reliable. In this class, we’ll learn how to spot fake news and use that knowledge to review digital media. What impact does social media have on our day-to-day lives? We will also view video, commercials, and advertising to help with our fake news detection skills. We’ll have a chance to find published articles, then debate whether these fit the criteria as being fact or fake. If you like to write and debate, then this class is for you.

1602 - 8:00 a.m. Sculpture: Creativity and Scholarly (Chris Mangold) If you enjoy drawing and painting but have always wanted to learn more about 3-dimensional forms, this class is for you. Using multiple mediums, we will explore additive, subtractive, bas-relief, and kinetic sculpture and how the elements and principles of design contribute to their creation and beauty. Not only is creativity used to create sculpture, but the academic subjects (math, science, technology) are used as well. As time allows, we will create some of our own pieces and observe the work of several classic and contemporary sculptors.

1603 - 10:15 a.m. Waterworld: Issues Impacting Our Oceans (Trent Halpin) Oil, plastics, and toxic waste pollute many of our natural resources. What is the impact on the environment and humans? What are the current myths about oceans and pollution? We will research current environmental issues impacting ocean life, learn what solutions are already in place, and use our creative problem-solving skills to design solutions of our own.

1604 - 10:15 a.m. Form and Function in Design (Chris Mangold) Companies are always on the lookout for creative problem solvers who can design products to make the world neater, cleaner, safer, or more accessible. In this class, we’ll work to solve a few assigned “problems” by creating something new. We will look at some products and how they have changed over the years to improve quality, efficiency, ease of use, and cost. If you would like to someday be a designer, be ready to be challenged in this class – thinking, creativity, and fun are musts!

1605 - 1:30 p.m. Going Ballistic with Catapults (Trent Halpin) What’s that in the sky? It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s ….. In this class, we will design different catapults, which are devices in which accumulated tension is suddenly released to hurl an object some distance. We’ll also design three or four different types of catapults and experiment with them to determine how to make changes to the design to achieve the goal of hitting the target. Let’s see how you can play using tension, torsion, and gravity. Splat! This could get messy!

1606 - 1:30 p.m. Being Truthful and Cheating Legally (Connie Stromberger) Trying to win an argument? You can create your own statistics, but you have to use math to do it truthfully. Trying to win a game? You can cheat, but you have to use math to do it honestly. In this class, you’ll learn about various topics that are covered in a high school statistics course, including randomness, experimental design, standard deviation, and probability. Can you choose the five medium jellyfish at random? What can we learn about experiments while flying paper helicopters? How can you use probability to win at games? An understanding of algebra is helpful, but not necessary.

2601 - 8:00 a.m. Comics: A Visual History (Evan Moore) Did you know that Superman can lift over 200 quintillion tons (2x10^20)? Did you know that Batman holds the record for most comic appearances (6,250)? Did you know the first comic book ever published was sold for nearly $3.5 million? If you’ve ever wondered how we got from the funnies in the newspapers to the hefty graphic novels you see on shelves in bookstores and hobby shops everywhere, you’ve come to the right place. This class will explore the origins of the comic book medium, the different formats of books, and all the little intricacies in between. We will read all kinds of comics and explore their depth of imagery, characters, and theme throughout many different examples. Come explore your favorite superheroes and learn where they came from!

2602 - 8:00 a.m. The Great War: A Simulation (Tim Wheat) In June 1914, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand set off a worldwide diplomatic firestorm as European countries and their colonies scrambled to avert a devastating war. In this class, we will take on the roles of Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Tsar Nicolas, and a host of other world leaders as we explore the M.A.I.N. causes of WWI through an exciting, highly interactive simulation. The objectives of the game mirror real world events as we’ll form alliances, conduct diplomacy, and negotiate deals in a highly strategic, problem solving/critical thinking environment. Can the war be averted? Can lives be saved? Is there a winner? We’ll answer all these questions, and more!

2603 - 10:15 a.m. A WOW-tastic Film Festival (Kara Girsch) Film festivals are held around the world to preview new films of all genres. You may have heard of the Cannes Film Festival (in France) or the Toronto Film Festival (in Canada), but these events have nothing on World of Wonder’s Film Festival! During this class, we will explore a variety of film genres, write our own screenplays, cast our own stars, direct scenes, and act in our very own original short films. Come dressed to impress for our screening and awards ceremony on Friday!

2604 - 10:15 a.m. A Star is Born: Singing and Songwriting (Kelly Moyer) Have you ever wondered how a hit song is created? Do you enjoy making up melodies or rewriting the words to your favorite songs? In this class, we will use technology to create our very own songs. No music background is necessary, but a strong love of music and singing is required! If you play a musical instrument, you are encouraged to incorporate it into our work during the week. We’ll also create an invitation to share our recorded creations with our World of Wonder friends and families at the end of the week.

2605 - 1:30 p.m. Oh No! It’s Poe (Kara Girsch) Quoth the raven, “Nevermore!” Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, editor, and literary critic. He is best known for his poetry and short stories, and his imaginative storytelling and tales of mystery gave birth to the modern detective story. Each day we will read one of Poe’s many tales, then use our imagination and creativity to write our own stories in the genre. Prepare for a creepy but fantastic week!

2606 - 1:30 p.m. The Art of Persuasion (Marrita Thompson)Advertising is all around us, but have you ever thought about how or why it works? Throughout this class, we will analyze various forms of advertising, including billboards, television commercials, in-store ads, and more, and put the strategies we learned to use! We will collaborate to design our own inventions and products, then market them in various ways to our classmates. By the end of the week, we’ll see how our teams use the “art of persuasion” to convince others to buy their products!
