“My Journey to Polynesian Dance” - Natasha Forsberg

Since I was three years old I can remember being at my grandma’s house listening to the Hawaiian music and walking through the downstairs room to peak at all my grandmaa’s (Kumu Lokalia’s) professional danc-ers. We were in Fremont, California. At that time the group was called the “Kailua Dancers”. It was a small group of women who formed tje group and were under the instruction of my grandmother. Iwatched,listenedandlearnedsilentlyuntiltheageoffivewhenmygrandmotherbegantoinstructmeaswell.ShehadtraveledtothebigislandofHawaiitorecievehercertificationas“Kumu”,whichmeansinstruc-tor and backbone of a Halau (Hawaiian dance school). There is so much to learn when you attempt to take this on. You mustknowthemusic,translation,culture,artorcostumemaking,choreography,languageandlivethe Aloha Spirit. After many years of study I opened my own Hawaiian Dance School and the birth of Aloha Dancersarosein2003.SincethattimeIhavegrownasateacherandcontinuetolearn.“Hulaisaway of life.” Those who come to join the Halau will tell you, we are a fantastic Hawaiian dance School with lots of Aloha Spirit.
