An Eye on Art Fantastic Art Teachers Fall 2011 Folsom Parks and Recreation art classes and gallery newsletter. “My Journey to Polynesian Dance” - Natasha Forsberg Since I was three years old I can remember being at my grandma’s house listening to the Hawaiian music and walking through the downstairs room to peak at all my grandmaa’s (Kumu Lokalia’s) professional danc- ers. We were in Fremont, California. At that time the group was called the “Kailua Dancers”. It was a small group of women who formed tje group and were under the instruction of my grandmother. I watched, listened and learned silently until the age of five when my grandmother began to instruct me as well. She had traveled to the big island of Hawaii to recieve her certification as “Kumu”, which means instruc- tor and backbone of a Halau (Hawaiian dance school). There is so much to learn when you attempt to take this on. You must know the music, translation, culture, art or costume making, choreography, language and live the Aloha Spirit. After many years of study I opened my own Hawaiian Dance School and the birth of Aloha Dancers arose in 2003. Since that time I have grown as a teacher and continue to learn. “Hula is a way of life.” Those who come to join the Halau will tell you, we are a fantastic Hawaiian dance School with lots of Aloha Spirit. We are open to all “Hawaiians at Heart”. For more information regarding our scholl please visit, www.alohadancerscameronpark.com.
