For the D-NOSES PILOTS…Citizens will be trained by odour experts to distinguish odours, make valid observations and identify odour sources.

We will collect and validate data using OdourCollect and a wide range of participatorystrategies adapted to the reality and necessities of each D-NOSES pilot

Awareness will be raised plus a sense of co-responsibility

Possibility to certify the volunteers with n-BuOH according to EN13725:2003.

Data validation by odour experts

How to validate an odour observation?

✓ Number of citizens reporting the same type of odour in the same area in the same period of time

✓ Number of odour observations sustained in time within the impact area✓ Frequency of the odour observations ✓ Identification of a plausible odour emitting activity


Calpuff model for verifying the odour sourceMeteo data and GIS data will be incorporated to run reverse trajectories for each citizen observation to verify the more plausible odour source.

Other factors will be considered to verify the validity of the observations:✓ Number of citizens reporting the same type of odour in the same area at the same time✓ Community champions observations (e.g. Certified volunteers, trained, motivated citizens with a history

of valid observations, etc.)✓ Activities performed at the odour emitting industry during the observations (engagement REQUIRED)

Conclusions: Some final thoughts


What are the benefits of the new approach?▪ With OdourCollect, citizens become data generators and provide real-time

odour observations for managing odour pollution for the first time (impossible

when using traditional odour management, i.e. olfactometry / field panels)

▪ Citizen science & participatory strategies help citizens to co-create local

solutions involving a quadruple helix stakeholder model (industries, regional &

local authorities, odour experts, and citizens)

▪ Industries can apply good practices to reduce nuisance at a lower cost or verify

the efficiency of corrective measures / odour abatement equipment

▪ Reduces the cost of traditional odour studies
