Bad News…or an Opportunity?
You all face a familiar situation:
• Your companies are facing explosive data growth…
they need newer, bigger, faster disk storage systems.
Bad news…or an opportunity?
Opportunity!…
• You can help your company begin to use their new
z/OS™ disk storage with absolutely no disruption to
ongoing business.
• You can help your company consolidate z/OS™ disk
volumes with minimal disruption to ongoing business.
Customers are under pressure…
The Challenge…Facing an overwhelming explosive data growth customers
must upgrade to faster, higher capacity more reliable and ultimately less
expensive disk storage while maintaining 24 x 7 data availability.
Most customers do not have the time nor the desire to solve this
dilemma…
They want a solution that will allow them to reap the benefits of consolidating
storage, servers and bringing up new applications with peace of mind; knowing
their systems will have access to faster, higher capacity more reliable and
ultimately less expensive disk storage while maintaining 24 x 7 data availability.
You have a solution…
That will allow customers to begin using newer, faster, lower cost and more
reliable z/OS™ disk storage systems sooner without any interruption to ongoing
business while consolidating to a lesser number of volumes with minimal
business disruption...,any time.

Why Consolidate?
• Simplify Management• Fewer–
• z/OS volumes
• Multi-volume datasets
• Hardware volumes to define
• Hardware and Software Architectural Constraints• Software limitations on number of z/OS UCBs
• Reclaim UCBs when hitting 64k limit
• Hardware limitations on number of physical HDD
• Users can’t define enough z/OS disks to fill a system…
It’s obvious customers that buy new disk systems want to migrate
their data to new systems…but
Why do customer want to consolidate?
Customers want to “Simplify Management” –
•Fewer z/OS volumes – fewer multi-volume datasets
•Simpler hardware config…
an "HDA" can hold more than a hundred 3390-3 volumes,
•a “Raid Group” can hold a thousand 3390-3 or hundreds of 3390-9s
•Hardware and Software “Architectural Constrains
“IBM Statement of Direction”
…promoting larger volumes…9, 27, 54
Customers need to begin using larger volumes…before they hit
architectural constrains (which some already have)
Software limitation on the number of UCB’s in z/OS (64K).
Need to reclaim UCBs when hitting 64k limit
The capacity of physical HDDs is increasing, (e.g. 350GB, 750GB, 1TB) to
the point where the number of physical HDD volumes in a storage system will
contain more disk capacity than the operating system can address, unless
z/OS volumes increase in size...

Why Do Some Customers Use
Professional Services?
• Time Constraint• Need to complete a migration/consolidation QUICKLY
• Lack Experience – Lack Resources• No time, nor inclination to learn new software
• Professional Services• Augment existing staff
• Have years of experience
• Are familiar with the tools
Why do customers use Professional Services for data migration?
Customers typically need to complete a migration or consolidation QUICKLY.
Many customers have less than a month lead time from ordering new DASD
until the old DASD has to be removed. Often customers have neither staff
nor the inclination to spend the time learning new software products. While
Professional staff has years of experience migrating data, are familiar with
the tools and know how to avoid common pitfalls.

FDRPAS/FDRMOVE—
Hardware Support
• Storage Hardware Independent…
• Supporting all vendors–
EMC, HDS IBM, SUN/STK
• Moving Any-to-Any like device
• Across & Between…
• Multiple Updating Systems
• Smaller to Larger
• Raid-S, Raid 10, Raid 5
• HiperPAV, PAV, non-PAV
• Midaw
• Cache Fast Write
Disk Vendor Hardware Independent…FDRMOVE with
FDRPAS…recognizes, coexists and works in conjunction with Cache Fast
Write, MIDAW and PAV (Parallel Access Volumes) and Hiper PAV on EMC
Symmetrix/DMX, Hitachi USPv/Tagmastore/USP, 9900V, IBM 2105 SHARK/
2107 DS8000 and other storage vendors’ z/OS compatible hardware.
FDRMOVE with FDRPAS integrates with HiperPAV and PAV, disabling it for the
swap and, as appropriate, re-enabling HiperPAV or PAV again after the swap.
Migrating data from any disk to any disk, of the same device type (e.g. 3390 to
3390, 3380 to 3380) to the same or larger size (e.g., 3390-3 to -3 or -9 or -27).
Non-disruptively moving smaller to larger and between like device types with
and without alternate tracks, by automatically updating system control blocks
and non-disruptively creating or rebuilding the VTOC Index (VTOCIX).

FDRPAS/FDRMOVE—
Remote Data Protection Support
Supporting all vendors–
EMC, HDS IBM, SUN/STK
Remote data protection
Across & Between…
• Multiple Updating Systems
• Local and Extended Distances
• PPRC, SRDF, TrueCopy, HUR
• HyperSwap/AutoSwap
Disk Vendor Hardware Independent…FDRMOVE with
FDRPAS…integrates with PPRC, TrueCopy, Hitachi Universal Replicator
(HUR), SRDF, GDPS/HyperSwap (IBM Geographically Dispersed Parallel
Sysplex) and GDDR/AutoSwap (EMC Geographically Dispersed Disaster
Restart). Disabling HyperSwap/Auto-Swap briefly for just the FDRPAS volume
swap and then re-enabling it again immediately after.
Generally FDRMOVE will always successfully complete with datasets being
moved to the target volume that is in a remotely protected relationship.
Employing FastMOVE to consolidate datasets to a target in an IBM or EMC
system will result in the use of FlashCopy or TF SNAP hardware replication.
FDRMOVE/FastMOVE will revert to conventional IO if the target volume is the
primary in remote data protection relationship in a Hitachi storage system that is
not a release of mCode that will provide a "Native FCTOPPRC Primary" facility.
The same support as IBM standard FlashCopy.
Always check with your local hardware vendor account team to see what
hardware and mCode is in your particular account.

FDRMOVE Key Strengths
• Speed• Employing hardware data replication…
• Consolidate at 1 TB/minute for 250 datasets.
• 1,000 datasets/minute across 16 volumes…
• Employing high performance EXCP IO…• 1500 DSNs from 22 vols to 8 vols in minutes
• Reliability• Over 35 years of industry excellence
• Builds on and extends well provenFDRINSTANT and FDRPAS technology
FDRMOVE Key Strengths
Speed
Identify data sets that are inactive and move them in an instant..., When
hardware replication technology is available, move 250 data sets, occupying
up to 1Terabyte of data across 16 volumes, in about 1 minute. Allocating,
cataloging and moving over 1000 small data sets per minute, with two
concurrent jobs across 16 volumes.
Concurrently moving multiple 3390-3’s in minutes with high performance
EXCP IO when hardware replication is not available.
Reliability
FDRMOVE automates the intelligent use of, builds on and extends the same
reliable proven technology found in FDRCOPY, FDRPAS and FDRINSTANT
to address all manner of data sets.
All files naturally go inactive at some point in time. Just not all at a convenient
time. FDRMOVE allows applications to continue unaffected as it non-
disruptively swaps active dataset source volumes to the target storage system,
so operations can “bounce” e.g. stop and restart, applications to momentarily
take them down and free datasets that do not naturally go inactive on a
convenient schedule.

• Use FDRPAS for system volumes, catalog volumes…
• Consolidating SWAP one volume w/FDRPAS
and consolidate others w/FDRMOVE• pick volumes with most active and or largest files.
• Option to expand the VTOC if VTOC not an adequate size
Using FDRPAS Start Consolidation with a SWAP
Use FDRPAS to move system and special data sets to a target non-disruptively
swapping the volumes to Target volumes of equal or larger size that the source
volume.
Optionally use FDRPAS to move smaller capacity source volumes to the larger
capacity target disks and then use FDRMOVE to add data sets from other
volumes to fill up the free space on the larger disk.
Ensure the VTOC on the source volumes moved with FDRPAS is large enough
to accommodate the higher number of additional data sets that will eventually
reside on the larger volume.

When FDRPAS completes the SWAP the Source Volume is online in the new
storage system and there is no disruption to the active applications.
A copy of the Source remains offline in the old storage system, specially
marked to prevent it from accidentally coming online.
Then use FDRMOVE to add data sets from other source volumes to fill up the

Is the VTOC too small?
Ensure the VTOC on the source volumes moved with FDRPAS is large enough
to accommodate the higher number of additional data sets that will eventually
reside on the larger volume. Use FDRPAS to expand the VTOC of a target as
necessary.
The BUILDIX function of ICKDSF is disruptive requiring shared DASD be put
offline to all systems but one.
FDRPAS includes EXPANDVTOC and SWAPBUILDIX useful utilities,
that employing the co-ordination techniques of FDRPAS™, allows you
to non-disruptively expand the size of the VTOC and rebuild a damaged
or missing VTOC Index while the volume remains in use on all systems.
3390-9 use a VTOC of 150 trks (accommodates about 7,000 data sets)
3390-27 use a VTOC of 450 trks (accommodates about 20,000 data sets)
3390-54 use a VTOC of 900 trks (accommodates about 40,000 data sets)
See the FDRMOVE Manual for notes on VTOC sizes and expanding VTOCs.

FastMove Consolidates
14 DB2 mod-9s to 8 mod-27s in 8 min
• Solution – FDRMOVE with FDRPAS• FDRPAS swaps the 14 source volumes to the new storage system• FASTMove (FlashCopy) concurrently moves date sets from 8 volumes
• Results• Consolidation of the 14 volumes complete in 8 minutes
Solution
FDRMOVE employing FDRPAS swapped the 14 source volumes to the new
storage system, then employing FASTMove (FlashCopy) in 8 concurrent
subtasks (MAXTASKS=8) moved date sets from 8 volumes concurrently to
complete the consolidation.
Results
Consolidation of the 14 volumes complete in 8 minutes.
Performance
14 volumes containing 1,829 DB2 data sets on each volume
consolidates to 8 volumes containing 3,200 DB2 data sets per volume.
Moving data sets at the rate of 3,200/minute (8.5 GB/min).

FDRMOVE Summary
A new z/OS RealTime mainframe data migration product providing file level
granularity to complement FDRPAS our existing non-disruptive volume level
migration solution.
FDRMOVE automates the intelligent use of, and builds on, our proven reliable
volume swap, dataset copy and instant hardware data replication technology to
move datasets.
Datasets can be selected by SMS Storage Group, volume or through the
catalog ... to go to a specific Storage Group, volume or groups of volumes...
• FDRMOVE identifies and moves data sets that are inactive.
• FDRMOVE automation employs FDRPAS technology to insure a source
volume(s) is in the same storage system as the new target...(transit station).
• FDRMOVE intelligence will determine when a data set becomes inactive
(not open/not allocated) and at that point use FDRInstant hardware
replication to move the data, while its recatlogs the dataset in an instant.
• FDRMOVE includes FDRPAS.
