Explaining Primary Care Demonstrator Sites There is no shortage of innovation in the NHSbut too often innovations do not have the reachor impact that would be expected in otherindustries This is partly due to innovations beingtested in isolation from the complementary NHSservices needed to unlock their full potentialInnovations have also been implemented withoutrigour discipline or evaluation generating littleevidence on the full scale potential

Many programmes support academic research and early-stage innovation eg the National Institute forHealth Research (NIHR) There are initiatives to help scale innovations which already have evidencesuch as the National Innovation Accelerator and to help small businesses to prototype their ideasincluding the Small Businesses Research Initiatives scheme Innovate UK also provides funding through anumber of channels However there are comparatively few programmes to support the generation of realworld evidence in lsquoliversquo clinical settings These sites will enable the evaluation of new technologies in areal world setting
