    Introduction to Scientific Inquiry

For this activity you need to wrap 6 items in boxes and numberthem 1 to 6. Each lab group should receive one of these lab

papers to record the groups activities/observations. Try to wrap

different weighted/scented/shaped items in each box. I have usedDD batteries, coffee grinds, pennies, a broken up clementine, andpaper clips in the past. Have the groups circulate to each station.

Answer the questions as a class following the activity.

This is a great first day of school activity!! Have Fun!

    Mystery Box Activity

Directions: Working with a group use all of your senses and powers of observation to determine what is inside

each box. You may do anything to the box except open it in order to determine its contents.1. Your groups box number: _______________________

    2. Write a detailed step-by-step explanation of the process you are using to determine the contents of your box:

    a. First we a. We observed

    b. Next we b. We observed

    c. Then we c. We observed

    d. Finally we d. We observed

What do you think might be in the box? ____________________________________

    Discussion questions:

    1. What common techniques did each group use?

    2. Were you ever 100% sure what was in your box? Why or why not?

    3. How does this apply to scientific discovery?
