Getting in and out of Chiloquin will be a bit tricky from about 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday June 25th while Union Pacific Railroad crews repair sinking rail tracks at the crossing in town. The railroad crossing on Chocktoot Street, will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians, except emergency vehicles. Railroad police will be enforcing the closure. A detour route north of Chiloquin off Sprague River Highway will cross the railroad tracks at Pine Cove, follow Royal Coachman and connect with Highway 97 from Rainbow Park Rd. People using the detour route are cautioned the road is unpaved and doesn’t allow vehicles weighing more than 30 tons, including trucks, RVs, trailers and fifth wheels. As part of the project, UP also will install permanent fences along the north side of the track to prevent trespassers from walking across the tracks in the downtown area. Track work also will be done the same day at other locations.

Lakeview, Ore. –The Fremont-Winema National Forest is beginning the process that will lead to publishing 2013 Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). At this point in the annual publication production process, the Forest requests the public to submit all proposed revisions to the road or motorized trail designations displayed on the 2012 MVUM no later than July 6, 2012. Any input received after July 6 will be considered for integration into the 2014 maps. “Forest users are welcome to propose revisions to the MVUM at any time during the year,” said Rick Newton, Deputy Forest Supervisor. “The Forest will evaluate all proposed changes to determine which of them can be incorporated into the next publication of the MVUM or may require additional in-depth environmental study.” The MVUM is the legal document stipulating which Forest Service roads and trails are designated for motor vehicle use across the Forest. It has been divided into 11 maps to provide sufficient detail for users. The MVUM must be issued every year, which allows the Forest an annual opportunity to correct mapping errors or discrepancies and update travel management decisions. The MVUM production process includes an evaluation of proposed revisions, data preparation and printing. To allow time to complete all the required steps, the Forest has to begin production of next year’s MVUM the first part of July of the current year in order for the new MVUM to be available to the public the first part of April of the next year. Instructions on how to submit MVUM revision proposalscan be found on the Forest Web site at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/fremont-winema/mvumrevisions

The next writing workshop made possible by Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation will be with singer-songwriter Laura Gibson on July 28th from 10-4. Laura will give a brief performance at 4:30 that will be free and open to the general public. The workshop is limited to 15 attendees. If you would like to register for Laura’s workshop, please contact the library’s reference desk. (541-882-8894, ext #18 – or drop by at 126 S. Third Street in downtown Klamath Falls!) Lunch will be provided for participants courtesy of the Friends of the Library. For more information about Laura, visit her website and listen to some of her music, look at her photos. http://www.lauragibsonmusic.com/ Laura writes poetry and prose in addition to crafting songs. Laura’s music has been featured on NPR and she has just returned from a tour of Europe. She is a native of Coquille, Oregon and her latest album, La Grande, pays homage to that lovely city in remote Oregon. Explore your inner musician through this workshop or share information about the workshop with friends that you know who are established or aspiring songwriters.

by Joan Rowe With all rain of the last few days this is the perfect time to pull weeds. In fact, some, like Storksbill are nigh on impossible to pull at any other time. This one hugs the ground tightly and simply breaks off if the soil is dry. Storksbill (Erodium cicutarium)

Native to the Mediterranean, Storksbill was one of the first exotic plants to invade North America. It was apparently introduced into California during the early 1700's by Spanish explorers. Now found worldwide above 70 degrees north and south latitude, in North America it has naturalized across Canada, in all 50 U.S. states except Florida and Louisiana and south into Baja California. Considered weedy or obnoxious in many locations, it is banned in Colorado. Storksbill has many other common names, including filaree, alfileria, pinclover, pingrass, cranesbill, heronsbill. Three subspecies are

proposed. A member of the Geranium Family (Geraniaceae), this low, spreading weed has small bright pink flowers on stalks rising from a ferny basal rosette. Although it is quite attractive as a small plant, it quickly grows into a mass low reddish stems which become dry and quite ugly when the long, spikey seeds mature. The seed pod bursts open in a spiral when ripe, flinging the seeds into the air. In Chiloquin, Storksbill will germinate without any additional water several times over the course of the year, the new plants covering large areas and out-competing all native plants.

The following wildflower field trips are sponsored by the Klamath Basin Chapter of the Native Plant Society, Klamath County Museum, Fremont-Winema National Forest, and Crater Lake National Park. For all trips it is recommended that you bring sturdy shoes or boots, plenty of water, sun screen and/or a hat, and a lunch. Be prepared for mosquitoes at most sites. Contact the trip leaders for more information. This area is west of highway 97 between Dorris and MacDole. It is easy access from our cars. Bring a lunch and call me to let me know how many might be going. July 14 Short Creek Area 9 am-noon led by Missy Anderson Meet at Sevenmile guard station, which is near Sevenmile Creek, at the junction of Nicholson Road and Forest Roads 3200/3100. To get there go to Fort Klamath, turn west onto Nicholson Road and go 4 miles, until you reach FS land, then turn right (north) onto FS Rd. 3200. We will follow Short Creek, heading south along FS Rd. 3100 and ending up on the Westside Rd. There will be some walking off-trail for short distances. Of course mosquito repellant will likely be needed! July 21 Dry Creek 9 am-noon, led by Sarah Malaby Meet at the Great Meadows Sno-park at 9 am. The Sno-Park is off Highway 140 approximately 30 miles west of Klamath Falls, near the Dead Indian Memorial Road junction. From there, we will caravan to the field trip site at Forest Road 3640-020. The trip will consist of approximately 1 mile of easy walking on the Dry Creek Snowmobile Trail. We did this trip last year and not many people came, but it is a great area to view forest wildflowers, so we are giving people a second chance to attend. August 4 4-Mile Lake Area 9 am-noon led by Missy Anderson Meet at the junction of Highway 140 and FS Rd 3661 (this is the road to 4-Mile Lake, about ½ mile before MP 35). We will mainly be exploring the interesting riparian and boggy habitat around Bull Swamp. There are no trails through this area and walking will be moderate to difficult in places (e.g. climbing over downed logs and through wet areas, etc). Rubber boots/waders (or shoes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy) are recommended. Mosquitoes are expected, so bug spray/net would be good too. August 18 Crater Lake Garfield Peak Trail 9 am to noon led by Jen Beck Meet near the east end of the Crater Lake Lodge at Rim Village. Hike is 3.4 miles round trip and a strenuous climb (1000' elevation gain) to the summit of Garfield Peak along the Crater Lake rim. Please note that participants will need to pay a $10 entrance fee or have a park pass.

Nicky Biehn slices and polishes interesting rocks, and then paints them with a scene from nature. These small works of art are perfect gems to add to your home, or to give as a gift. Nicky grew up and has lived her life in various places in Washington, Oregon, and California settling in Klamath Falls in 1995. She is a self-taught artist. Much of her inspiration comes from her childhood where she lived on 120 acres with a pond and a lake, and so watched wildlife and nature everyday. She attempts to paint as realistic as possible, considering regional and season changes to reflect real life. Her goal, like most every artist is to improve her techniques and be a better painter. She enjoys all aspects of life and her goal is to portray that in her art. Recently Nicky has begun to add beaded jewelry to her list of accomplishments, and is continuing with her love of wildlife to include many birds and animals in her beading.

It is likely, that if you are the victim of a crime, that the Sheriff’s Department will not respond. This is because the Sheriff’s Department is underfunded and understaffed, and not able to respond to crimes unless lives are in danger. But still, crimes need to be reported! They need to be tracked, and sometimes patterns can be figured out that might help apprehend a criminal. Crimes can be reported immediately online, and it is possible to get a print out of your report to have on hand. The direct link to the online reporting feature is http://report.citizenserviceportal.com/Report.aspx?agency=kcso

How to sign up for Food Items

If you need commodities and think that you might be eligible to receive foods at the Food Pantry, please drop by on the 4th Wednesday of the month between 10 am and 1pm to sign up. We are here to help those in our community who are struggling financially and although our supplies are limited, we are here to serve our community.

How to Donate to the Food Pantry:

Drop-off times at the Food Pantry, opposite Kirchers: Between 2PM and 3PM on the Monday before the 4th Wednesday in the month or on the 4th Wednesday in the month at 9.30 AM.

Non-perishable food items are always needed and can be deposited in donation barrels around town. They are at Kirchers, The Table, Chiloquin Community Church and the Community Center. More barrels will be placed during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

Toilet paper and other personal items are always appreciated.

Monetary donations can be put in Collection Boxes located at: Family Foods, the Library, Kirchers, Clyde’s Market, The Table and the Williamson River Christian Fellowship.

Checks: The Food Pantry is a non-profit organization and checks should be made out to “Chiloquin Care Program” and deposited in the collection boxes in town or brought to the Food Pantry. Receipts will be issued. Checks made out to the Klamath/Lake Counties Food Bank need to be ear-marked for the Chiloquin Food Pantry or Chiloquin Care Program in order for us to be benefited by the donations.

Donations of Produce: If you have an over-abundance of produce in your garden, we are happy to distribute them.

Volunteers are always needed to assist with stacking commodities coming from Klamath Falls on the Monday before the 4th Wednesday in the month at 1.30pm for approximately 1 hour, and for distribution on the 4th Wednesday of the month between 9.30 am and 1 pm.

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Storytime: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. Story time is at Thursday 2:30 PM during the school year. 2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 4. Help with sorting donations. 5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information. If you would like to get further involved, attend a Board meeting, held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6PM in the Community Center conference room.
