Introducing BlueScope

We are the leading steel company in Australia and New Zealand, supplying a large percentage of all flat steel products sold in these markets

Our History

ESTABLISHMENT AUS MID & DOWNSTREAM OPS, BEGINS ROLLFORMING IN ASIA

1965 – BHP opens the Whyalla Steelworks, South Australia;

- Domestic production in Asia begins with commissioning of roll former in Sing.

1968 – New Zealand Steel starts production at Waikato North Head.

1970 – BHP acquires 50% of John Lysaght (Aust) Ltd.

1979 – BHP acquires 100% of John Lysaght (Aust) Ltd.

1989 – BHP acquires New Zealand Steel.

1985

THE EARLY YEARS

1885 – The Broken Hill Propriety Company (BHP) founded.

1915 – BHP opens its iron works in Newcastle, Australia.

1918 – John Lysaght (Australia) Pty Ltd established.

1928 – Australian Iron & Steel Limited (AIS) formed.

1935 – BHP acquires the AIS Steelworks at Port Kembla.

1965

FURTHER EXPANSION INTO ASIA, ENTRY INTO MID AND DOWNSTREAM US MARKET

1995 – First Asian coating facility in Indonesia;

– Roll formers commissioned in Oregon, USA.

1999 – Newcastle Steelworks closes.

2000 – Public Listing of OneSteel Limited.

– BHP Steel used in construction of Sydney Olympic venues.

2001 – BHP merges with Billiton to become BHP Billiton.

1995

BLUESCOPE BECOMES AN INDEPENDENT COMPANY, FURTHER EXPANSION INTO ASIA AND NORTH AMERICA

2002 – BHP Steel becomes a publicly listed company on ASX

2003 –BHP Steel becomes BlueScope Steel Limited.

2004 – BlueScope Steel acquires Butler Manufacturing Company in North America, including its business in China.

- Board approval for A$100M investment in India.

2007 – BlueScope Steel divests Vistawall from US and aquires Smorgon Steel Distribution in Australia.

2008 – BlueScope Steel acquires IMSA Steel Corp, a group of four businesses in North America

2002 2011-present

BANZ

2011 – BlueScope Steel merges it’s ANZSMB, LYSAGHT, and Distribution Business to form BlueScope Australia New Zealand

2012 – BlueScope Steel announces Joint Venture with Nippon Steel in Japan

2013 – BlueScope Steel announces re-branding to BlueScope

Cadetships with BlueScope Steel

At BlueScope Steel we pride ourselves on our strong tradition of attracting, retaining, supporting and developing young talent through our cadetship program.

So what is a Cadetship?

Cadets get paid close to $33,500 in their first year with BlueScope Steel.

This starting salary is divided up between a base salary of $29,874 and an education allowance of $4,500

What do we look for?

Applicants must obtain an ATAR of 80 or above

Recommended HSC subjects include: – Maths (3 unit highly recommended) – Physics – English – Chemistry (for Materials, Chemical

Engineering & Chemistry Cadetships)

BlueScope offers Cadetships to students with strong academic results in their HSC, who are about to begin, or have just started an undergraduate degree.
