    AN OVERVIEW/SUMMARY OF RIZAL LIFE WORK AND WRITINGS

    I. CHAPTER VI: IN SUNNY SPAINA. SECRET MISSION

    a. Was to observe keenly the life and culture, languages and customs, industries andcommerce, and government and laws of the European nations in order to prepare himself

    in the mighty task of liberating his oppressed people from Spanish tyranny.

    b.Rizals departure for Spain was kept secret to avoid detection by the Spanish authorities andthe friars

    C. FROM SINGAPORE TO COLOMBO

    a.In Singapore, Rizal transferred to another ship Djemnah, a French steamer, which left Singapore for

    Europe on May 11, 1882

    b.May 17, 1882- Djemnah reached Point Galle, a seacoast town in southern Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)

    c.Rizal wrote on his travel diary:

    The general appearance of Point Galle is picturesque but lonely andquiet and at the same time sad

    was imprisoned

    because the Diariong Tagalog had ceased publication for lack of funds

    l. Rizal received sad news about the cholera that was ravaging Manila and the provincesaccording to Pacianos letter, dated September 15, 1882

    m. Another sad news from the Philippines was the chatty letter of Chengoy recounting theunhappiness of Leonor Rivera

    n. In one of his letters (dated May 26, 1882), Paciano advised his younger brother to finishthe medical course in Madrid

    o. Rizal left Barcelona in the fall of 1882 and established himself in Madrid, the capital ofSpain

    F. SAD NEWS FROM HOMEa. Spread of Cholera that was ravaging Manila and other provincesb. Leonor Rivera was getting thinner because of an absence of a loved one.

    G. LIFE IN MADRIDa. He enrolled at UNIVERSIDAD CENTRAL DE MADRID (Central University of Madrid)

    c. Took lessons at the Academy of San Carlos (Painting & Sculpture)

    d. He also took private lessons in (GERMAN, FRENCH & ENGLISH)

    H. THEY ASKED ME FOR VERSES

    a. Rizal joined the CIRCULO HISPANO - FILIPINO which is a society of Spaniards and Filipino.

    Rizal was requested to create a poem which was declaimed upon December 31, 1882.

    I. RIZAL AS LOVER OF BOOKS

    a. SEOR ROCES owner of store where Rizal purchased 2nd hand books

    b. Rizal was deeply affected by BEELCHESS STOWES UNCLE TOMS CABIN & EUGENE SUES THE

    WONDERIGN JEW.

    c.Rizal also visited PARIS for the first time and he said that PARIS IS THE COSTLIEST CAPITAL IN

    EUROPE.
