You will occasionally see our gardeners tending the plants outside your window. If you wish for total privacy, we recommend that you lower the curtains.

The hero the street was named after

William A. Pickering (1840~1907) was the first Protector appointed by the British Governor Sir Harry Ord in 1877 to administer the Chinese Protectorate in colonial Singapore.

At that time, a number of Chinese migrated to Singapore, lured by the bustling free port and opportunities for work. Many ended up joining secret societies to protect themselves in the foreign land. These secret societies often clashed in turf wars and severely threatened the stability of the settlement.

Being fluent in Mandarin and other Chinese dialects – skills William Pickering picked up during his decade-long service in Hong Kong’s Chinese Maritime Customs Service – he was able to gain significant insights into the Chinese culture and customs, as well as gain the trust of many secret societies. William Pickering managed to quell the social unrest and problems posed by the secret societies of his time, amidst personal threats.

Pickering Street, where PARKROYAL sits, is named after William Pickering in recognition of his gallant efforts.

For a start, you are already staying in one of the most iconic hotels in Singapore. PARKROYAL on Pickering has been lauded “an architectural stunner” and one of seven “hotels of the future” by Forbes. It is the first hotel-in-garden concept that uses environmentally sustainable design and features. The organic design and lush setting creates a visually stunning green oasis in Singapore’s vibrant central business district.

Right at your doorstep is Hong Lim Park. The heritage park was the first public garden in Singapore, and was built by businessman Cheng Hong Lim in 1885. It was a popular venue for election rallies and political speeches back in the 1950s and 1960s, and in 2000, the park was designated Singapore’s “Speakers’ Corner”. Lend your ears to an oratorical performance or rehearse your business speech here.

Stroll southward towards New Bridge Road and you will discover Chinatown’s most beloved shopping street offering every manner of knick-knacks, including street food and intricate souvenirs. Prices are fixed at established facilities but be sure to practice your bargaining skills at the roadside stalls. Slow down to appreciate the beautiful architecture of temples, churches, shrines and mosques. You are welcome to enter these premises and observe the rituals of worship.

Cross over to the parallel South Bridge Road where more shops line the street. Continue northward past Singapore River to the waterfront entertainment districts of Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, where some great dining venues and pubs are located. Getting around the rest of Singapore couldn’t be easier as you are only a short stroll from the City Hall MRT station. Taxis are plentiful and affordable as well.
