Data-Driven Strategic Planning

• Strategies based only on subjective impressions are too easily swayed by misleading information, personal agenda’s or “flavour of the day” approaches to economic development

• It is important to have a realistic expectation about the potential results of an economic development program and avoid portraying the community as something other than it is

• A solid understanding of the community directly influences the ability to accomplish or meet community goals and objectives successfully

Overview of Past Tools

• The Ministry has been maintaining two economic analysis resources since 2003:

1. Public facing, web-based tool (REDDI)

2. Internal, Excel spreadsheet tools available through Ministry staff

What is Analyst?

• A web-based tool that provides data on regional economies and human capital and then makes it easy to use

• Helps you better understand your region, and then make good decisions about how to build strong regional economies

• Available for all municipalities in Ontario and Canada

• Users can create their own custom regions

How Can Analyst Help a Community and/or Region?

• Provides insight into local, regional, provincial and national workforces:

• What are the occupations in high demand by industries?

• How many local jobs are filled by commuters versus local residents?

• In what industries are specific occupations growing and/or projected to grow? Which are declining?

How Can Analyst Help a Community and/or Region

• Provides insight into local, regional, provincial and national industries:

• Which industries are largest sources of jobs and income?

• Which industries are growing? Which are declining?

• Which industries is the region highly competitive?

Accessing Analyst for Your Organization

• Access to Analyst is available to economic development organizations through the Ministry at no charge for a period of one month and begins the first working day of each month

• If your organization requires access to Analyst after the initial one month period (for an ongoing project) please send an email request to [email protected] (you will not have to complete a new Terms of Conditions agreement). 10

Steps to Access Analyst

1. Complete and submit the online request form: http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/rural/edr/edar/index.html

2. Upon submitting the request form you will be emailed the Terms and Conditions Agreement. The agreement outlines the terms and conditions related to the use of Analyst

3. Read, sign and return the agreement back to the Ministry by email to [email protected] or by fax to (519)-846-8178 no later than three business days prior to the end of the month. Analyst is provided for one month at a time and begins the first working day of each month.

Support with Analyst: Advisor Support

In Southern Ontario, the Ministry’s Agriculture and Regional Economic Development Advisors are available to:

1. Fulfill “simple” data requests for your organization

2. Provide guidance concerning when and where to use Analyst

3. Work with your organization to help with the analysis of your region’s economy and incorporating economic analysis into strategy development 12

Support with Analyst: Advisor Support

In Northern Ontario, the Ministry’s Agriculture Development Advisors will provide information from Analyst to their Ministry of Northern Development and Mines (MNDM) colleagues as / when simple requests are received

MNDM would then work with the requesting community to:• Explain the reports• Provide guidance concerning when and where to use Analyst• Work with organizations to help with the analysis of the

region’s economy and incorporating economic analysis into strategy development
