STYLES OF WRITING

⦿Your style of writing should change

depending on the circumstance for which you

are writing.

⦿Example: If you are writing a letter to get

out of a speeding ticket, you would write an

argumentative essay

⦿ In previous grade levels, you were exposed to

persuasive and argumentative writing.

⦿Now, we are transitioning to more

informative styles. (Expository/Analytical)

four main types of writing

WHAT IS ANALYTICAL

EXPOSITORY?

⦿Analytical Expository goes beyond simply

explaining a topic you have already analyzed.

⦿Analytical Expository walks the reader

through the analyzing process and helps the

reader gain a new perspective on BOTH sides

of the topic.

EXAMPLE ANALYTICAL ESSAY

PROMPTS:

⦿ It is wise to weigh options carefully before

making decisions, but waiting too long to

decide can lead to missed opportunities.

Write an essay in which you explain both the

value and the challenge of carefully

considering options before deciding. Be sure

to support your analysis with reasons and

examples.

PROMPTS:

⦿Most of us want the freedom to decide how

to live our own lives, but independence

requires us to take personal responsibility for

our actions. Write an essay in which you

explain both the value and the challenge of

personal independence. Be sure to support

your analysis with reasons and examples.

EXAMPLE ANALYTICAL ESSAY

PROMPTS: ⦿Communication has changed significantly in the

last two decades. Multimedia communication has grown significantly through print, web, social media, television, and electronic applications. While some believe these changes have improved communication, some believe these changes have simply become distractions in the communication process. Write an essay in which you explain both the value and the challenge of multimedia communication. Be sure to support your analysis with reasons and examples.

Analytical: using or skilled in using analysis (i.e., separating a whole--intellectual or substantial--into its elemental parts or basic principles)

⦿This should be your goal – simplifying the topic for the reader by analyzing each element and providing informational facts and evidence for you reader to make a more educated choice

◼ Set up the organizational structure of your paper

⦿Body Paragraphs

◼ Explore all concepts and points throughout your

analysis

◼ Focus on one clear point for each paragraph

◼ Explain each point in detail by using evidence

and details

◼ Analyze each point after you have explored it

YOUR ANALYTICAL ESSAY SHOULD

INCLUDE:

⦿Conclusion

◼ Summarize the findings

◼ Draw analysis to a close

◼ Inform the reader how this essay has added to

their knowledge

TIPS

⦿Avoid using your opinion as evidence and avoid bringing too much emotion into the analysis.

⦿Your reader will get bored if it sounds like you are just whining throughout your essay.

⦿Stick to evidence, facts, and examples. These will be the backbone of your essay

⦿YOUR OPINION MEANS NOTHING WITHOUT FACTS TO SUPPORT IT!!!

THESIS STATEMENTS

⦿What is it?

◼ A thesis statement is a statement (not a

question) that outlines the main idea or focus of

the essay.

◼ A thesis statement should be stated as fact (even

though it is your opinion).

◼ It is a claim that you will spend the rest of your

essay supporting with facts and details

THESIS STATEMENTS – MORE THAN

JUST A TOPIC

⦿What is it?

◼ A thesis states your interpretation, analysis, or

opinion on the topic- not just the topic.

⦿Where does it go?

◼ Last sentence of your lead paragraph

⦿Why does it go there?

◼ It lets the reader know what the essay will discuss upfront. It makes ides easier to follow and the organizational structure clear.

Writing Topic 1. Choose one of the six ballad poems we

covered in class this week. It can be the one

you assigned, or you can pick another.

2. Analyze the poem.

3. In a well-organized essay, briefly summarize

the poet’s thoughts and analyze how diction,

syntax, and imagery help to convey his state of

mind. Also, consider literary elements such as

point of view, universal theme(s), figurative

language, and structure emphasize the

author’s purpose.
