STYLES OF WRITING

⦿Your style of writing should change

depending on the circumstance for which you

are writing.

⦿Example: If you are writing a letter to get

out of a speeding ticket, you would write an

argumentative essay

⦿ In previous grade levels, you were exposed to

persuasive and argumentative writing.

⦿Now, we are transitioning to more

informative styles. (Expository/Analytical)

WHAT IS ANALYTICAL

EXPOSITORY?

⦿Analytical Expository goes beyond simply

explaining a topic you have already analyzed.

⦿Analytical Expository walks the reader

through the analyzing process and helps the

reader gain a new perspective on BOTH sides

of the topic.

THESIS STATEMENTS – MORE THAN

JUST A TOPIC

⦿What is it?

◼ A thesis states your interpretation, analysis, or

opinion on the topic- not just the topic.

⦿Where does it go?

◼ Last sentence of your lead paragraph

⦿Why does it go there?

◼ It lets the reader know what the essay will discuss upfront. It makes ides easier to follow and the organizational structure clear.

Writing Topic 1. Choose one of the six ballad poems we

covered in class this week. It can be the one

you assigned, or you can pick another.

2. Analyze the poem.

3. In a well-organized essay, briefly summarize

the poet’s thoughts and analyze how diction,

syntax, and imagery help to convey his state of

mind. Also, consider literary elements such as

point of view, universal theme(s), figurative

language, and structure emphasize the

author’s purpose.
