The assembly line is a system of labor where parts are added to a product in a way that shorten the time needed to create the product. Workers are trained to do one task only. They stand in a line, and as the products move with the conveyor belt, the workers perform their tasks. The products are finished without the workers having to move around.

It saves time, and it saves money, because skilled craftsmen are no longer needed. A low-skilled operator can replace them.

This was how the assembly line was like when Henry Ford first developed it. But there can be many variations of the assembly line. For example, homes are now mass produced. Now, manufacturers use machines instead of workers to work on the assembly line, because of labor costs and productivity.

Read the paragraph about the assembly line. What is the main idea of this passage? What are some other items that might be massed produced on an assembly line?Would you like to have a job where you worked on an assembly line? If more robotsare used on the assembly line, what happens to the workers?
