A Catholic education is a life changing opportunity. The stu-dents at St. As stand out academically, technologically, cul-turally and spiritually. You want to give them every opportu-nity. A limited number of scholarships are available please call the office and inquire.

Our state test scores show that we meet or exceed the area schools, both public and private. We provide many extras such as a brand new state of the art computer lab, SMART-boards, a new science lab, art and music programs, library program, extra curricular activities and much more. As our Middle School parents have been communicated, their new Math and Science Teacher, Mr. Abaya will also be teaching Math 9 to the eligible students this year. Please take a tour of the school and consider becoming part of the St. Anastasia family.

Volunteers would be appreciated for the new school year to help with lunch duty, morning duty (we offer free morning care from 7:30AM on) and to help on the various fundraising committees. Please consider giving your time to benefit the students.

The faculty and staff are eager to welcome the students back. Please keep the students in your prayers as they pre-pare to begin another exciting year with academic and spiri-tual growth at St. Anastasia School.

A s Summer winds down I want to report on the Sum-mer Program the Parish sponsoredCELEBRATE SUMMER 2008. It was a grand success. It ran for eight weeks. There were 206 children registered. Unfortu-nately, we had to cut off registration near the opening of the program so the schedules of teachers and counselors could be settled.

I am so grateful to the Co-Directors, Mrs. Janine Kramer and Ms. Kelly Larkin. They were terrific from the registrations in the Spring until the cleanup at the end. Everything was so organized that there were no mishaps the entire summer. This being the first time for the program shows all the work they did behind the scenes. Their daily enthusiasm and concern for the children was inspiring to all. I thank them in the name of all the Parish. Moreover they recruited a great staff who were zealous in making the program provide a great time for the children. So a word of special appreciation to the teachers, counselors, volunteers, seminarians who took registration each day, kitchen staff and maintenance staff. The pro-gram was a success because of all your cooperation and good-will.

Here are some letters we received. First, from a camper: Thank you for making my summer so much fun! I appreciate all of your attention and supportthis was the best camp ever!

From parents: My children were fortunate to have attended the camp program for three weeks this summer. My children had a fabulous time and could not wait to get up the next morning for another day of fun. The counselors and aids went above and beyond the call of duty to accommodate the chil-dren. The love and care my children received was out-standing. I would also like to commend you on the security measures to keep the children safe. It was reassuring that the children were safe.

Thank you for a fun, safe place to go this summer. My chil-dren enjoyed going to camp every day. We loved the caring people and flexible schedule. We hope to return again next year!

I also must add that the children gave the Parish Staff much enjoyment as we watched them play water games and sprin-kler play on the lawn opposite from the Rectory. It was a blessing to see children have fun.

God continues to smile on our Parish!

    Dear Parishioners,

Msgr. George Ryan Pastor, St. Anastasia Parish

  • MOVIE CLUB

    Yesterday

Yesterday is the first international feature film ever shot in the Zulu language, and is the first South African film to receive an Oscar nomination (in the category of Best Foreign Language Film). Equally important, Yesterday was made with the support of Nelson Mandela and the

Nelson Mandela Foundation, marking an important new commitment by Mandela (and South Africa) to attempt to erase the long- standing stigma of AIDS in a country that has been ravaged by it, primarily from lack of knowledge

    about the disease.

Set against the awesome, harsh landscapes of South Af-rica, Yesterday is an eloquent, unsentimental film that qui-

etly builds an overwhelming emotional force. The film's title protagonist is a 30-year-old mother who lives in Rooi-hoek, a remote village in South Africa's Zululand. Yester-day's life is not easy; there's little money, no modern con-

veniences, and her husband is away in Johannesburg working as a miner. But she possesses a sunny nature,

and takes great joy in her seven-year-old daughter Beauty (Lihle Mvelase). The precarious balance of Yesterday's life is threatened when she is diagnosed with AIDS, and must

journey afar to learn about and confront her illness. Yes-terday's primary driving force for survival is her daughter,

who is a year away from starting school. Yesterday herself never had the chance to go to school, and as she faces her affliction she sets her sights on a single goal: to be with Beauty on her first day of class, along with all the

other proud mothers of Rooihoek. South Africa (2004), R (violence) , 96 min

    New features in the Bulletin

With the new school year we would like to introduce new and exciting features in our Bulletin. We would like to insert four new sections in a form of one page (section) a week. Every section would focus on one subject, such as cooking, home care, pet care, health advises, season advises etc. With your help, these thematic sections would be published regularly on a monthly basis, such as e.g. cooking on the first Sunday of the month and so on. That is why we invite you to join us in publishing these sec-tions. We are looking for all sorts of help, as short as your recipes, and as elaborate as monthly columnists. We have an impressive local and church publication, that can reach out much further to many residents of Douglas-ton, Little Neck and neighborhood areas. With your help, we can become even better tool for our Parish and our commu-nity. Please help us. If interested, call Fr. Chris at (718) 631-4454.
