SARASOTA-MANATEE COUNCIL OF THE NAVY LEAGUE VOL. 13, NO. 4 NOVEMBER 2014 Dr. Robert Barylski Addresses September 17 Dinner Meeting October Meeting Shared with Military Officers Association of Sarasota ANCHOR LINE D r. Robert Barylski, a retired associate professor in the Department of Government and International Affairs at USF, and author of The Soldier in Russian Politics 1988 -1996, addressed our September 17 meeting at Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club. Dr. Barylski, who frequently travels to Russia and speaks on political and economic reconstruction in the former Soviet Union, addressed Russia’s need for a long-term alliance with Europe (Russia has energy supplies and Europe needs them); corruption in Russia (It may just be part of Russia’s heritage); and the need for Russia to build and maintain positive relations with neighboring Islamic nations on its southern border. He also gave his views on the recent conflict between Russia and the Ukraine, and the effective annexation of the Crimea by Russia. After his presentation, Dr. Barylski conducted a question-and-answer session, fielding a variety of questions from the audience. Dr. Barylski W hat a wonderful October luncheon! MOAS was pleased to share their October program with the Navy League and the Air Force Association. Many Navy League members are also MOAS members and members of other service- oriented organizations here in Sarasota. We hope to make this shared program an annual event. We were pleased to have had such a large turnout for this luncheon, 140 attendees! Highlights included the celebration of the US Navy’s 239th birthday! It was wonderful to see traditions such as the most senior and the most junior Navy personnel present cut the birthday cake. After a few pictures of the cake cutting, we were treated to a group photo of all personnel present related to the US Navy in some way and hearing them sing the navy song! Following the birthday festivities, we received a wonderful presentation from Rear Admiral Brian McCarthy, who currently serves as the Secretary on the MOAS Board. With many sobering facts and information that our media is giving us every day, it would be easy to be discouraged. And, as stated by RADM McCarthy, “I’m not going to “gild the lily” here today – we have a lot of tough stuff to deal with. The economy, the international situation, education, immigration, our cities, our privacy, our culture, health care, Congress & the administration, the rule of law and our freedom.” and he didn’t. However, he went on to say “...friends of freedom the world over look to the United States not only as an ally against tyrants and terrorism but a powerful beacon to all those who strive to be free.“ As expounded upon by RADM McCarthy, we live in the greatest country on earth and need to face challenges together in order to continue to inspire ourselves, and those around us. …from the Council Presidenta time to celebrate, reflect and look forward

I trust you all have enjoyed your summer and that those who have travelled are now

back safely. Welcome back Snowbirds! – November’s a busy month with our 9th Annual Earl Fowler Memorial Golf Tournament on November 5th at the Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club. Our dinner meeting on November 19 at the Bird Key Yacht Club will recognize the Marine Corps birthday. – Our December annual member meeting and Holiday get-together is scheduled for December 3, 6 PM, at the Gold Coast Eagle Distributors facility in Sarasota. As we did last year, we will hold our business meeting beginning at 6, install officers for 2015, and then enjoy a social evening, with heavy hors d'oeuvres, beverage ‘sampling’ compliments of Gold Coast Eagle distributors, plus wine and soft drinks. This event was very popular last year, and we expect it to be a hit again this year. We’ve invited the active duty Coast Guard personnel from our two adopted units – Coast Guard Cortez and the cutter Crocodile – so it should be an enjoyable evening again this year

Save the date: December 3, 6 PM, Gold Coast Eagle Distributors. More info when we have it. Our Council continues to do well: Our membership is holding, and we were one of only 2 councils in Florida with a net growth in membership this summer. Financially we’re in good shape, in no small part to all the effort that goes into making our (only) annual fund raiser, the golf tournament, a success. Our endowment fund, managed by the Community Foundation of Sarasota, continues to grow. Many of our members are generous with their time and money, ensuring our council remains viable and financially healthy, but one particular stand-out, again this year, is Mr. John Osterweil, who continues his incredible record of raising funds for our council programs, and to grow our endowment. Thank you, John, yet again for your incredible support of our council! We’re working on the calendar for next year, and plan to have a lot of interesting and informative events on the schedule. I hope you look forward to participating in them as much as I do. Tim Rocklein

North Port High School NJROTC NewsNorth Port High School NJROTC Unit Opens New Rifle Range

On September 15th North Port High School NJROTC

opened its new Air Rifle Range. The 2000sf+ facility will be home for the elite NJROTC rifle team of North Port High

School. The team was previously shooting in a classroom which required a daily set up and break down of all equipment. That process took well over one hour away from practice daily. The new facility can support 10 shooters on the line at one time vice five in the old facility. The team will be shooting with their new Crossman Challenger PCP Air Rifles obtained with a $5,000 grant earlier this year. North Port NJROTC rifle team members are aiming to go to the Secretary of the Navy’s Air Rifle competition in Fort Benning, Georgia in three years or less. The rifle team will also be hosting

their first rifle competition with surrounding ROTC Units on October 25th. On another note the rifle team competed on September 13th at Riverview High School’s Move and Shoot competition. During the competition shooters were required to shoot in the prone, kneeling

and standing positions with one major obstacle to complete. After each shooting position team members were required to run one lap of the school’s track with their rifles at port arms. Saturday’s team consisted of Team Commander Nick Vietri and Cadets Haley Cain, Tim Tarricone, David Greenberg and John Grodio. Each cadet was awarded a ribbon for competing and finishing the competition. North Port High School NJROTC cadets have been very busy supporting school events as well as promoting cadets. Recently twenty seven North Port High School NJROTC Cadets helped support one of the largest Cross Country meets in NPHS's history. The cadets from NJROTC Unit USS NORTH PORT started their day at about 0530 in the morning assisting 1650 runners as they ran through various check points during the 5K race. Cadets also assisted with parking and other administrative duties such as firing the 10 gauge cannon for the start of each of the six competitive categories. There were 62 teams that competed from as far away as Fort Walton Beach. Additionally this past Wednesday at North Port High School NJROTC Cadets conducted a promotion ceremony. Eleven Cadets were promoted; 6 Cadets achieved the rank of

And finally, during last night’s football game the NPHS NJROTC Color Guard Team opened the game with the traditional parading of the colors.

This weekend the Venice Raider team braved the water-logged jungles of Jelk’s Preserve in the first annual

“Bog Slog.” The wet fall weather combined with a torrential downpour Saturday morning, provided the Raiders knee to waist deep water in which to run.

The first heat was a three-mile trail run, cut short to 2.5 due to a six foot deep obstacle. Cadets Jordan Lake and Christian Criola placed first and second (20:21, 20:23), respectively. The second heat was a candy chase, with Joshua Lafountain and Christian Criola laying candy trail for the rest of the team. Chaperone, Mrs. Suzanne Park and son Cadet Todd Park, collected the most candy in under 45 minutes. The Raider team was blessed with a respite from rain, enjoying sunny skies for the two hour race. All went home happy and soaked!
