Ancient Egypt and Kush
Lesson 5: Ancient Kush

Goal - What students will learn:• Main Idea:
– In early Egyptian society, pharaohs ruled as gods and were at the top of the social structure.
– Religion shaped Egyptian life.– The pyramids of Egypt were built as tombs for the pharaohs.
• The Big Idea:– Egyptian government and religion were closely connected
during the Old Kingdom.
• Standards:– 6.W.1.2. Students are able to explain the development of the
River Valley civilizations based on their geographic locations.– 6.W.2.2. Students are able to identify the cultural
contributions of the River Valley Civilizations.– 6.C.1.2. Students are able to identify relationships of events,
ideals, and written documents to changes in civilizations.
Access Prior Knowledge
• Preview Main Ideas and Big Ideas• Review Vocabulary
– Vocabulary activity was done on first day of unit– PowerPoint with Vocabulary words and students
write answers on marker boards– Points are kept for each row for the chapter and the
row with the most correct answers gets a prize
• Discuss “If YOU were there…”• “Was King Tut Murdered?
– Do Day 5 Activity– Write any unanswered questions on the smart board
and encourage students to research on their own and see if they can answer any (provide bonus points for those that do)
New Information• Read pg. 107-113and discuss questions• Students Answer Focus Questions as we read
(smart board)• Complete Section 5 Graphic Organizer from pg.
107(smart board)• Google Earth – Kush• Trade Network
– Students are put into pairs and are given maps– They will create a legend and outline the areas where
the products originated with different colors– Students will go to http://
www.dignubia.org/maps/trade/tmap.htm to find answers.
– As a class we will do go over the answers on a notebook page.
Application
• Worksheet 57 & pg. 113 #5
Generalize
• Discuss Focus Questions and answer on smart board
• Complete Graphic Organizer and reveal answers on smart board
• Review KWL from Day 1 and write answer to any questions they answered, add to the what I learned
