11/3/2018 1 Van Gogh, Vincent. The Starry Night. 1889, oil on canvas, Museum of Modern Art, New York City. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Starry_Night. Description: The painting is filled with large and small yellow circles that seem to glow in a blue sky that goes from dark at the top to a light blue along the horizon line. There is a large tree in the foreground that hides part of the town below from the viewer. The color palette is almost all blues and greens with the pop of bright yellow in the sky. The piece has so much texture due to the heavy brush strokes and obviously thick paint. The emphasis in the painting is the sky and the large swirl in the center of the painting. Analysis/Content: The painting is of a small town with a night sky fading, yet the moon and stars still shine brightly. The swirls and the deep brushstrokes give the painting a lot of energy and movement. Context: Van Gogh admitted himself to an asylum in the south of France after he cut off his ear. This painting was painted during this time. He painted quite a few of his most famous paintings during this period of his brief life. Meaning: I’m not sure what the artist was trying to say. Judgment: This is one of my favorite paintings. I love the deep brushstrokes and the movement they help create. I am partial to swirls and this one to me is mesmerizing. I can’t take my eyes off it. Hokusai, Katsushika. The Great Wave off Kanagawa. 1826‐1836, color woodblock print on paper, (numerous locations) Art Institute Of Chicago, Chicago, IL. www.artic.edu/artworks/24645/under‐the‐wave‐off‐kanagawa‐ kanagawa‐oki‐nami‐ura‐also‐known‐as‐the‐great‐wave‐from‐the‐series‐thirty‐six‐ views‐of‐mount‐fuji‐fugaku‐sanjurokkei. Description: This color print has three different colors of blue, a gray/black and also uses the color of the paper. The large wave is asymmetrically balanced in the scene. The top of the wave has claw‐like tendrils coming down. The large curved lines tell you the wave is large as does the size of the wave to the size of the boat and the fishermen it is about the overtake. Mount Fuji stands solid in the background while the waves are moving and about to crash. When looking carefully you can see four fishermen clinging to the rear of the boat in the foreground, plus there is an additional smaller boat in the middle ground that also has six fishermen clinging on. Analysis: The claws on top of the wave make it look fierce and something to worry about, almost like a sea monster about to come out and grab the boats it sees. While you cannot see the faces of the fishermen, you can tell they are holding on for dear life. The use of the curved lines to emphasize the height of the waves is well done. While the series was about Mt. Fuji, clearly the emphasis in this print is on the wave. Context: Do not know. It is one of a series Hokusai did on Mt. Fuji. Meaning: Do not know. Judgment: I love the movement in this print. You can tell the wave is just about to crash… Woman with a Hat, 1905 Description/Form Analysis/Content Context Meaning Judgment

Art was practical and functional

“Art for art’s sake” was unknown and further would probably have been incomprehensible to an ancient Egyptian who

understood art as functional above all else.

• Paintings and carvings on temples were a form of religious worship. They told myth and stories of the gods and goddesses.– They also “proved” to the gods that a king was doing his duty to

maintain order in the universe

• Paintings and carvings on tombs were to bless the dead on their journey to the afterlife. It often had a story of the deceased’s accomplishments in life.

Hieroglyphics• Greek Hieros = sacred• Greek Glyphos = words or signs• Egyptians called them “words of the gods”• Invented around 3100 BCE• Pictures and symbols. Combinations and

directions had different meanings.• Hieroglyphs were a major part of wall reliefs. They

explained the stories on the wall.• Writing was an integral aspect of art. It was in itself

a work of art.

Role of the Gods• Egyptians believed that the universe and all events

that occurred within it were governed by the will of the gods.

• Thoth, the god of writing, magic and wisdom. He is depicted with the head of an Ibis or as a baboon.

Hierarchy in society

Not much is known about the lives of

everyday Egyptians because the lives of the

elite were the most recorded.

Life After Death
