Government• When Ancient Greece began, there were 4 different
governments: Monarchy, Oligarchy, Tyranny, democracy.
• Although Greece was small, it was broken up into small city–states with individual governments.
• Alexander the Great was part of a powerful monarchy.
Religion• The Greeks followed a Polytheistic religion.
• Athens was said to be ruled by Athena, the goddess of wisdom.
Social Structure• Nobles were very wealthy and powerful men that
were favored by the king.
• In a Tyranny, the king was the only person that had any power. He ruled by force.
The Arts• In Athens theater and drama were part of everyday life.
They often put on shows in open aired theaters.
• Greece was very skilled in painting and making pottery.
Written Language
• Athenian citizens wrote on tablets and developed a written language
• Boys in Sparta learned to read and write at the age of seven.
Technology• Athenians used a water clock to time
speakers at city council meeting.• In Athens, people used coins as a
standardized currency.
Stable Food Supply
• The agora was a big market place that sold food and other goods.
• When Sparta began to run low on food supplies, they conquered their neighbors.
Did Not Start From Scratch
• Spartans conquered their neighbors to gain man labor and slaves.
• King Pericles rebuilt Athens and rounded up the citizens and returned Athens to its original glory after the Persians burned it down.
Strong Leader/Armies• Alexander the Great conquered Ancient Greece,
turning it into an empire.• Oligarchies were strong wealthy leader that
used their power and army to gain wealth.
Developed Systems/Bureaucracies
• Athenians had a council of 500 men to discuss issues.
• Spartans governed wit.h a iron fist to maintain their strong army
Trade
• Athenians used a busy port near the sea to get goods and to trade.
• Alexander the Great helped spread Greek ideas all over the world.
Religion(s)
• Alexander the Great allowed conquered lands to keep their customs and religions.
• Greeks followed polytheism. This means that they worshipped many gods, including Zeus, Poseidon, and Athena.
Decline/Fall
• After Alexander the Great died at the age of 33, his powerful empire crumbled into three separate kingdoms, Egypt, Syria in the Middle East, and Macedonia and Greece.
