Each city-state had its own unique characteristics

The people of Greece had language and religion in common; however, they were loyal to their city-state only

First civilization in Greece was the Minoan civilization

Artifacts show they were very rich; traveled by ship to trade

Historians disagree on the cause of the Minoan collapse

Learned about Minoan culture through trading; after Minoan collapse, became the most powerful on the Mediterranean

Dark Age: less trade; poverty among people; no written records

Dorians invaded Greece; brought farming technology and new weapons

Nobles who owned land overthrew Greek kings

The polis, or city-state, was like an independent country. WHY?

Acropolis: main gathering place in polis on a hill; sometimes served as the religious center

Agora: open area where people could meet and debate issues; also a marketplace

City-states varied in size and population
