Learn about books your teachers loved this year,
and books they are looking forward to reading this summer!
Mrs. Sweeney
Any Legend fans out there? If you, like
me, have been dying to know what happened
between June and Day after Champion ended,
then Marie Lu has a treat for you! I LOVED this
book and becoming immersed again in the lives
of these characters and their relationship. You
won’t regret reading this whole series!
This year, I loved reading...
This summer, I am looking
forward to reading... If you enjoyed House Arrest or Knockout by K.A. Holt, you will enjoy being
reunited with the same characters in this
book. I loved the relationship between the
2 main characters, Kate and Tam-- it
starts out as a friendship, but both girls
are surprised when it turns out to be
something more. Another wonderful book
in verse by this amazing author!
This is the first in a new series by Kiera
Cass, the author of The Selection series. I
am looking forward to seeing the new
world that Cass has created, and the
inevitable romance and drama that will
fill the pages of this book. P.S. The Selection is headed to Netflix! Stay
tuned...
This is a book that many Rocky Run
teachers are looking forward to reading
this summer; it deals with the history of
race and racism in our country and offers
steps we can take to become allies and
antiracists. It is particularly relevant
today, and I am eager to learn from
Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi.

The Opposite of Always, by Justin ReynoldsThis book is a funny, compelling read about the complexities of friendship, love, and family with a bit of time travel. Are you intrigued? You should be! How many times does Jack need to relive the same three months until he gets it right? Who is to say which version is the right one anyway?
Torpedoed: The True Story of the WWII Sinking of “The Children’s Ship”, by Deborah HeiligmanI was fascinated by this non-fiction text about the attack and sinking of a passenger ship that was evacuating children from England to Canada during WWII. I sure didn’t learn about this in history class!
Charlie Thorne Last Equation, by Stuart GibbsI’ve loved other books by this author, and Ms. Grover said it was awesome. So, I am excited to read this book over the summer!
Ms. Grover
Lifeboat 12, by Susan HoodThis historical fiction verse novel tells the story of 13 year old Ken, who is sent on a ship to Canada to escape the London bombings during WWII. But when the ship is torpedoed, will Ken and his lifeboat make it? I loved learning about a part of WWII I didn’t know before!
Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows, by Ryan Calejo
Charlie’s abuela has told him so many stories of mythical beings from Hispanic folklore. When Charlie begins to grow horns and feathers--like the ones described in his favorite legend--he is suddenly swept up in a world where the mythical beings he's spent his entire life hearing about seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Hispanic folklore and into his life. And even stranger, they seem to know more about him than he knows about himself.

City Spies, by James Ponti12 year old Sara gets into legal trouble for hacking and is recruited by an undercover division of MI6 to train as a spy. All of her spy skills are put to the test when an evil plot is uncovered at a coding competition in Paris. An excellent mystery that kept me guessing!
Mrs. Slevin
Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen YangThe author himself is the character in this graphic novel. He tells the story of the basketball team at the school where he teaches and intertwines non-fiction about the history of basketball and some of its greatest players. This year of the Dragon’s basketball season not only changes the lives of the players, but the author’s life as well. This book was captivating and inspirational!
The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate
Before I dive into this new book I plan to read The One and Only Ivan to my kids so we can enjoy this sequel together. Bob the dog is Ivan’s best friend in the original book and is based on the author’s real life dog. He is a strong and independent character. In this story he is off on a journey to find his long lost sister with the help of his friends Ivan and Ruby. Watch the book trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8UKRHQ66Mw

This book took me away to another world!
