CARL GILL LIFE MEMBER

LEGEND

Carl takes pride of place – centre front of his 4th Grade Bulldogs team.

Carl Gill was born in Barbados on 19 January 1941 and enjoyed the standard cricketers up-bringing of backyard cricket with older cousins and then some lower grade club cricket. Through Carl’s job on refrigerated ships, that travelled across the world , he first visited New Zealand in 1966, returning often. In 1976 a friend introduced him to his wife to be, Leonie Gill (Eastern Ward Councillor

4

Page 6: and Financial Statement 2017-18 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club › images › annual_report_2018_digtial.pdf · Division 1 Masters: Tejesh Modi Division 2 Shepherds: Cullum Jones T20

1998-2013) and in 1977 he moved permanently to NZ. They were living in Kilbirnie and on seeing cricketers playing on Kilbirnie Park, Leonie phoned the Kilbirnie Cricket Club and arranged for Carl to attend practice. Starting down the grades he rose through the grades eventually playing a few games for the Senior/Premier team. Carl was a fast Bowler in those days and although he was 45 years old by the time I first faced him in 1986 as a 16 year old, he could still get it through! Carl bowled both outswing and inswing and was happy bowling over or around the wicket. Although a fearsome sight charging in with the wind at his back, Carl relied on his skill and pace rather than any sort of sledging or verbals. After beating the bat he would simply return to his mark and charge in again. A pulled muscle caused by a slip on the turf, lead to a change to medium pace and spin. In his early 50’s, an operation to remove a benign tumour from between his lung and ribs left his left shoulder weakened so Carl gave up the medium pacers for good. Spin only from now on. Although he had the odd 8 for, and a few 7 for’s from the fast bowling days, so far, they have not been repeated with spin. A hatrick and a 4 wickets in 5 balls has.Carl generally bats down the order, but has managed a top score of 62 n.o Carl is still playing in the 2 day grade for the Bulldogs at the age of 77, and is a fantastic example to everyone that age is just a number. Carl plays cricket because he loves it and he enjoys the company of the great teammates he has. Carl may not be the feared fast bowler I once knew, but he amazingly looks just the same! I look forward to seeing Carl and the Bulldogs down at the Clubrooms for many more seasons to come.

Retirement of Premier Team Manager – Sean Joseph

The announcement of Sean’s retirement from his roles as Premier team Manager and Chief Cook and Bottlewasher was a serious blow to the Club. His contribution to the success of the team and the Club, is immeasurable. Over the last ten years or so, Sean and Sara prepared many a fine meal for the Premiers, and many other hangers-on, and their enthusiasm and solid work ethic around the Club was inspirational. However, all good things must come to an end. The demands of a business that has achieved good levels of success is testament to Sean and Sara’s “head down and arse up” approach. The very success of the business has put added pressure on the time available to devote to the Club. In addition, Sean and Sara are dedicated family people. The arrival of one grandchild, and another on the way, means they must find more family time, and we admire them for that. The bar takings will take a nosedive as a result of their absence but I’m sure they won’t be lost to the Club completely, As ardent supporters of the Mighty Easts, I expect they will be seen around the traps from time to time.

ANKUR BASSI - SENIOR PLAYER, COACH

Ankur has made Wellington his “ home away from home “ and has been a resident coach and player to the Mighty Easts Cricket Club since 2012. During this time he has played many fine innings for the Club including some outstanding centuries including a personal high of 177. He has fitted into the Club culture here well and has become a popular member of the Premier squad and a personable coach and mentor. He has also been known to knock up a very tasty curry for some of the boys to enjoy!

Ankur has previously played First Class cricket in India, has played in the Essex County Cricket League, and was a member of the Rajasthan Royals IPL wider training squad.

Ankur has earned a lot of respect for his integrity, excellent temperament and solid work ethic. He has undertaken a serious coaching role within the Club, both within the Junior ranks and with more senior players seeking individual coaching and tuition. He holds a New Zealand Cricket Qualified Level 2 Coaching accreditation and is building a good reputation in this area.

Some of Ankur’s students have attained high honours during the season past, with a couple of guys who were receiving his tutelage gaining New Zealand Under 19 representation. Quite a few others to benefit from his tuition have reached Wellington age group representative teams.

The extension and reclassification by Immigration Dept,.of Ankur’s work visa looks to be a promising step for his longer term future in Wellington.

Ankur is available to take on new coaching roles within the Club, both at Senior and Junior levels. Seek him out if you want to engage Ankur for one-on-one, groups, or team coaching.

Club Manager’s Season Report 2017-18 by Gordon Dry --------------------------------------------------------------------- It was a brilliant summer weatherwise – one of the best in living memory – an extraordinary contrast to the weather of the previous season which was shocking to say the least. The terrific weather meant there was little in the way of disruptions to play. It reflected in the performance milestones shown earlier in this report, where 45 centuries were scored across the whole club, against 28 scored in the season before. I am never completely satisfied in terms of results, but there were some outstanding achievements. First and foremost, the Premiers brilliantly retained the Pearce Cup, completely pumping the Johnsonville blokes in the three day final at the Basin Reserve at Easter. It was a very one sided affair – though being the decent club that we are, we set the villagers a sporting target to give them the chance to win – 604 runs in 37 overs!!! They tossed in the towel and the Mighty Easts chalked up its 15th Pearce Cup Championship title in the last 17 years!! On top of that outstanding victory, there were achievements galore at the awards ceremony: Cricket Wellington - Pearce Cup – Overall Premier Championship – Easts Premier Men Premier MVP – Player of the Year–JamieGibsonRoyal Visit Cup - Club Championship - Total Points over all Teams–Eastern Suburbs. Norwood Trophy – Club Championship – Best Average Points Per Team – Eastern Suburbs Crichq T20 Knockout Competition – MVP Award – Jed Wiggins Age Group Award – Mens Under 19 MVP – Luke Georgeson (Luke was the leading run-scorer for Wellington (and second overall) at the National Under 19 tournament with 263 runs and a high score of 117. Luke also took 5 wickets at an average of 21.6 and his performances were rewarded with selection in the New Zealand Under 19 team for the World Cup.)

21

Page 23: and Financial Statement 2017-18 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club › images › annual_report_2018_digtial.pdf · Division 1 Masters: Tejesh Modi Division 2 Shepherds: Cullum Jones T20

Lower Grade Performance of the Year – Joe Drysdale 9-17 for Easts Aces. Awards for Grade Winners 3rd Grade - Easts Super Challengers T20 Grade, Division 3 – Easts CobrasWinning these two other grades was good but a little below the level we were hoping for. Recording five seconds and four thirds was bloody irritating. We’ll want to focus on lifting those outcomes next season to get more teams into the winner’s circle! There were other tremendous individual and team highlights too.-

• Master blaster for the 1day Taxes team (40 overs), Ross Grounsell posting a remarkable 232 not out against the hapless Indian Sports team.

• New Club Chairman Clinton Johns was moved to make his mark at his first Club annual prizegiving by moving that club stalwart and senior statesman Carl Gill be accorded Life Membership. The motion was carried by acclamation! I’m still trying to work out how many years Carl has been playing but at 77 years of age it’s PLENTY!!!

• New team to the Club this season, the third grade Tamils finished a promising third in their grade first crack, and will be looking to build further on that in the seasons ahead. The more remarkable part was that guys in this team posted no fewer than eight centuries during the season.

• Some other standouts – Nikhil Govind of the 3rd Grade Super Challengers – 49 wickets for the season including an 8-44, whilst Chintan Mehta of the One Day Masters team chalked up an amazing four centuries.

Off the field, the Club ran pretty smoothly. The Clubrooms and bar were reasonably well patronised during the season, but could be improved. We need to to explore more inventive ways to attract teams back to the Club after their game on a Saturday. (Work in progress!!)

22

Page 24: and Financial Statement 2017-18 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club › images › annual_report_2018_digtial.pdf · Division 1 Masters: Tejesh Modi Division 2 Shepherds: Cullum Jones T20

The end of season prizegiving function was a success with the bar almost cleaned out and as a result the takings were pretty solid. The Club’s financial results for the year were satisfactory, whilst the bar pretty much broke even on operations for the season. Big thankyou’s for huge contributions –

• to Sean & Sara Joseph whose long time commitment to the Premiers and the Club has been awesome and whose work will be sorely missed. Many thanks also to Cath and Clinton Johns for stepping into the

breach when necessary, to cover vital activities such as lunches, premier scoring and generally helping out wherever they could.

• To Pat & Jane Baker for their wonderful sponsorship support. • Club President Ronnie Nathu continued to bang his head

against the Council brick wall and carried on fighting to promote the cause for the new Clubrooms.

• to Bernz Golder, our Webmaster/Statistician/Photographer all rolled into one. Again, great work Bernz !

• to Cath Shields – the Club’s official Premier scorer and luncheon assistant - always prepared to step up. Well done Cath – the baking is delish and always well received!!

• to all the captains and team organisers for fronting up and carrying the clubs banner throughout the season. Good one!

I must make a comment about a negative aspect of the season past - the significant fall off in the use of the practice nets during the season – particularly by the lower grade teams. The Club has poured a lot of dough into these nets over the years, and we have also just invested in a new bowling machine which we can swing into action more regularly next season. The practice system may need a revamp and I want to have a close look at the whole question of team practices before the new season comes around. We look forward to the 2018-19 season with confidence. The Club has fashioned a fantastic record over the years, but we’re not going to rest on our laurels – it’s onward and upward.

Premier Mens team Season Report 2017-18 by Gordon Dry --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bringing back home the Pearce Cup, symbol of Premier supremacy in Wellington club cricket, was a terrific achievement and we can all be proud of the boys for this triumph. 15 championships in the last 17 seasons is a remarkable accomplishment. Without being ultra negative we can voice a little disappointment at getting pipped for a place in the One Day Final and also missing out in the T20 final, but it was a very successful season nonetheless. We can take stock of the little banana peels we encountered along the way, and in the post-mortem try to pinpoint where we might iron out these kinks in the season ahead. The Pearce Cup win was a typically solid effort throughout the round robin phase, and the final against Johnsonville at the Basin Reserve was a clear demonstration of the dominance of our guys. A resounding victory with the villagers surrendering when faced with the daunting task of scoring 604 runs off 37 overs!! Some highlights of the Premier season –

• Jamie Gibson’s stellar season with bat and ball – being the team’s leading runscorer and wickettaker and taking home Player of the Year at the Club prizegiving. He also won the Premier MVP of 2017-18 at the Cricket Wellington club awards. He is a player in his prime and he has a lot more successes in front of him in the seasons ahead.

• 18 year old ex St Pats Town lad Luke Georgeson had a wonderful season. He soon commanded a regular place in the Premier side and performed consistently well. He romped into the Wellington Under 19 team for the National tournament, where he was top runscorer and also voted MVP. This success was capped off with selection in the New Zealand Under 19 team that played in the Under 19 World Cup. He performed admirably at that tournament, with limited opportunities. Luke topped off the season with a polished and mature century in the second innings of the Pearce Cup final.

33

Page 35: and Financial Statement 2017-18 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club › images › annual_report_2018_digtial.pdf · Division 1 Masters: Tejesh Modi Division 2 Shepherds: Cullum Jones T20

• Highly talented young wicketkeeper/batsman Lauchie Johns made further progress when he made his first class debut for the Firebirds during the season past. He was also selected for a New Zealand XI to play Pakistan in a warm-up game for that touring team. Lauchie’s abundant batting skills were clearly demonstrated and reinforced when he also posted a swashbuckling century in the Pearce Cup final.

• Peter Connell’s 39 wickets for the season was an outstanding return, given that he missed a number of Saturdays due to family commitments. His 5-28 in the Pearce Cup final clearly showed his characteristic ability to bowl with pace, aggression and control. Undoubtedly, Peter is one of the best bowlers in Wellington cricket, but with a growing family to nurture and develop, he is contemplating retirement. Hopefully, he might get the passion and the urge to go around one more time!!!

• Another youngster making excellent progress is 18 year old offspinner Jed Wiggins. He got a number of crucial wickets for the Wellington Under 19 team at the national tournament. He also got 22 wickets for the Premiers in the season past, including an outstanding haul of 6-17 in a T20 game..

• One has to mention the brilliant Ben Orton. He was only able to play a handful of games during the season but posted two outstanding centuries and looked assured and in control whenever he went to bat. We’ve got to keep this guy firmly in our sights!!

We can look ahead to the 2018/19 season with confidence. We have a good blend of youth and experience in the squad and there is no good reason why we can’t continue on our winning way and further add to the bounty the team has amassed over a long, long period!!!

Premier Reserves team season report 2017-18 by Gordon Dry ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Whilst it was a “solid” season for the Reserves, and finishing third in the Alan Isaac Trophy overall championship was a meritorious performance, dropping the odd crucial game here and there hurt the final prospects. The side gelled pretty well and had a good blend of experienced cricketers and a number of younger, new faces – most of whom will benefit from the experience. On paper it’s a pretty strong unit and if we can keep the bulk of them together, there’s no reason why they can’t press on and clinch the Reserves championship. To summarise some of the highlights –

• Krishna Patel, Ankur Bassi, Sean Neal and Sam Shukla were the backbone of the batting, and scored the bulk of the runs. Ankur and Nic Moorhouse posted the only centuries scored during the season.

• Haseeb Quazi and Kaleb Gilhooly grabbed the bulk of the wickets, with useful contributions from guys like Nathan Cameron, Zach McIntyre–Reet, Will Rykers, Jeremy Stoyanoff and Jack Hansen. A nasty shoulder injury curtailed Jack’s season just when he was starting to hit his straps. Nathan started late and was striking some good rhythm when the season end came too soon.

• Will Rykers, Nic Moorhouse and Jeremy Stoyanoff all looked to be good acquisitions and we’ll want to keep them on board for a full season in 2018/19.

• Hats off to Sam Shukla who batted well, kept wickets tidily, and initiated the live scoring of all the Reserves games on Crichq. Well done Sam – who justifiably won the MVP award.

The Reserves grade is a very competitive level of cricket and you’ve got to be able to play a bit to make the team. Pretty much all of the Reserves group are seriously members of the “Premier Squad” and with the normal amount of development and the posting of good performances with consistency, they can force their way into a spot in the top team.

I get a real kick out of this team doing well and I like to promote the side and ensure they get good levels of sponsorship and support throughout the season. One of my big hopes is for the side to bounce back in 2018/19 and return to the top of the table. We have an experienced core and some good young players in the group and some more on the horizon. Let’s all get together and make that our goal in the season ahead. First Grade Roosters team season report 2017/18 by The 12th Man ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Roosters class of the 2017/18 season made hard work of things after several promising starts. The stats show a lack of runs needed to compete at this level and while the bowlers toiled hard we missed middle order runs when the pressure was applied. A run of four defeats in two dayers is the worst in the ten year history of the team, which is even more disappointing when at times in each of those games we were still in the running. However as usual with the Roosters the cricket is only part of the product and there were still many highlights throughout the year which keeps everyone coming back . Jimmy “Fallon” Bignall snared the first ever Roosters hatty, backed up by the world’s worst celebration of asking not to be touched...Sameer “Squiddy” Magan, the shining light with the bat conjuring up 506 runs and lifting his 4 by 2 for his first Roosters ton - not sure if we should say Ankur’s coaching helped or not? With the ball, Bignall and Gardner were the leading wicket takers, at times both changing match situations with key spells. Highlights were Bignalls ball of the season to rip out the off pole of a Hutt top order batsman to set the scene for an innings win, Gardner bowling much earlier than in previous seasons often coming on in the 7/8th over and providing the breakthrough. Finishing second bottom was a wakeup call and some off season signings are needed to return this juggernaut back to the top where it belongs. Honourable mentions go to the timeless Doogie who batted a week after open heart surgery to save first innings, only to have his thumb exploded from one that popped Not sure why a lefty was wearing righty gloves?? (lesson there kids..). Also, the end of season where the skippers house was removed of furniture and a live band of ex Roosters brought in to entertain the boys and half of Hataitai...... win / lose or draw.. you don’t get many better teams than the Roosters... Until next year.....

First Grade Cougars team season report 2017-18 by Gordon Dry ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Cougars finished second in the grade, which wasn’t a bad effort even though they finished a fair way behind the grade winners. With an ounce of luck here and there, they may well have finished closer. This is a pretty handy group of players and we’ll be looking to get them all back on board next season to see if we can make the step up to grade winning victory. Some highlights –

• Locky Donnelly and Ollie Fredrickson shared the captaincy and both made a good fist of it. We generally were able to field a full team, which can be a bit tricky at times, as guys are often called upon to move up to the Reserves team. Thanks to all you guys for taking the step up when necessary.

• Frazer Williams was the top batsman amassing 610 runs at an average of 48.92. Only just out of St Pats Town, it was a terrific season for Frazer, and I’ll be looking for him to kick on next season. Other handy runs scoring came from Gurpreet Singh, Locky Donnelly and Kanwar Bedi.

• Aakash Modi was a very good newcomer to the ranks and was the top allrounder for the season. Vena Niutao and Charan Sandhu also contributed well with both bat and ball.

• Some very handy wicket hauls were also picked up by Danish Sharma, Paul Hunt, Cam Williams and Andrew Peden. It was good to see Andrew back in the fold late in the season.

• A couple of very promising youngsters had a few games each – Alex Lowcay and Dilakshan Dila – both good players who I expect to see more of next season.

• Saadani Kadar and Ahmad Khan were both restricted in the days they could play but both are good cricketers and I will want to see more of them next season.

• Saikat Sahoo had limited opportunites but I reckon he can bat a bit and I’ll be looking for some good scores from him in 2018/19.

Page 43: and Financial Statement 2017-18 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club › images › annual_report_2018_digtial.pdf · Division 1 Masters: Tejesh Modi Division 2 Shepherds: Cullum Jones T20

• I’ll get strung up if I don’t mention that in the local derby against the Roosters, the Cougars won the one dayer convincingly, but were a bit lucky to take the two dayer on the first innings.

• Probably the Cougars best game of the season was a win in the one dayer against eventual grade winners Wainui at Wainui. The boys from over the hill were gutted!!! I won’t mention the outcome of the two day game!!!

2nd Grade Bullets team season report 2017/18 by Gordon Dry ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No report or stats received from Bullets! The Bullets had a mixed season – some very good wins in both one day and two day games, but also some slightly disappointing losses dotted here and there. At one stage they had their noses in front on the grade points table but faded somewhat in the stretch to end up in 4th spot. The team had a couple of experienced leadership guys comprising Scott Henshilwood and Brad McCarthy – and later in the season young Andre Bradshaw took up the captaincy role. The team was hamstrung during the season when Brad had an addition to the family and Scott was led down the aisle!! Naturally, both were a little restricted in there cricket pursuits after these events. There were some meritorious performances throughout the season: - Shriprasad Rai scored runs consistently and included an innings of 112 in his run scoring achievements. - Wickets during the season were shared around, but Karman Singh’s 6-38 against Naenae in a losing game, was an excellent effort. - A lot of guys chipped in with runs and wickets and should be mentioned here – Johnny Sutton, Damian George, Tom Barlow, Karl Grove, Andre Bradshaw, Tom Kibblewhite - all made very handy contributions - good work guys! - Big two day outright wins against Upper Hutt, Northern Park and Stokes Valley showed the mettle of this team and what they were capable of. This is a pretty handy group of players who had a slightly disrupted season and will kick on to better things next season if we can keep the guys together and add a little bit of fine tuning!

3rd Grade Super Challengers team season report 2017-18 by Sagar Vijay ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- It’s not often we are accused of playing too hard but we were this season! Our goal for 2017/18 season was to win the Grade; we believed in ourselves, stuck together as a team and are the winners of the Cricket Wellington 3rd grade competition 2017/18.

Could it be the disciplined net session’s, improved fitness standards or our lovely scorer’s new found ability to count? Who knows? Super Challengers were dominant right from game one and have only lost one game out of twelve played.

Super Challengers remained unbeaten on top of the table in two day matches and shared second spot on the one day table, marginally missing out on the chance to qualify for one day final’s on net run rate.

From my perspective this was our best performance yet. The player who contributed heavily towards our success for 2017/18 season with his bowling is Nikhil Govind who grabbed all time highest number of 49 wickets for Challengers in a season. It was also a remarkable comeback season for our dashing batting all-rounder Sunil Samachan on the other hand who piled up nearly 500 runs.

Unlike previous season, Super Challengers were not heavily dependent on handful of players, rather each player in the team contributed when they were required to and sometimes beyond their call of duty. Our middle order batting has been really good, it has made the majority of runs, and our all-rounder’s have done an excellent job with the ball as well. Our spinner’s came in the middle overs and tied things down and have taken wickets too. Our fielding was comparatively better. We played each game on its own merit, each time we were looking for that perfect game and really trying to nail all three facets of the game.

Off the field a lot has happened, Captain Karthik along with Nikhil Govind, are focussed on arranging regular net sessions and turnout for the net sessions were quite impressive. Most net sessions were carried out under the supervision of Nikhil Govind who was significant in mentoring some young player’s and making sessions more productive. Vice-captain Sunil Samachan was also in charge of arranging snacks and drink’s for the team which kept us hydrated and energetic on scorching sunny days. Captain Karthik executed responsibility of re-building a team which underwent major changes last year, by arranging preseason practise matches and managed player’s absence’s second half of the season which ensured we had a competitive playing XI all the time.

If I could summarise the season in two words it would be – “Team Work “, the keystone to success this season, which is probably why we are awarded the best team of the season by largest and the best cricket club in Wellington Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club . Having advanced to 2nd Grade we are looking forward to another successful season next year.

3rd GradeTamils team season report 2017-18 by Bavisanth Thayarooban The Eastern Suburbs Tamils team enjoyed their first season with the new club. Having been with VUWW for over ten years, the Tamils had decided that it was time for a change and were very welcomed by Gordie and the Eastern Suburbs cricket club. Having gone back into the 2-day format after four years, the Easts Tamils had finished third place in the competition having only narrowly lost to the teams in first and second by small margins after having a first innings lead in both matches. Collectively the team had played well over the course of the season, and there were some notable milestones along the way. The batting was mainly built around the middle order - Janakan Karunaharan and Nu’ufolau Ropati. Both had very successful seasons having scored three centuries each with an average well in excess of 60. Janakan was particularly impressive with an overall aggregate of 793 runs in the season. Nu’ufolau was equally imposing with the limited matches he was able to play for us, he was known to be the hardest hitting batsmen in the grade having scored three 100s and one 50 at a remarkable strike rate. Nu’ufolau was a match winner for the Tamils. Other notable individual performances with the bat was Aruban Gunaratnarajah’s incredible 151* when chasing 274 to win off 35 overs in the fourth innings against Easts Smoking Pineapples. As well as Roshan Pancha’s supporting 100* with Janakan Karunaharan (159) when the pair had put together a mammoth 268 run partnership against the Easts Super Challengers. The bowling attack was lead by Sarangan Sakithivel who would often come on as first change, swing the ball and pick up wickets at a regular interval. He had ended the season as the Tamils leading wicket taker, having taken 34 wickets with an impressive bowling average of 12.08 and an economy rate of 3.5. Other key contributors with the ball were Maran Kumarasamy and Rajeev Benedict. Maran was a key allrounder for the Tamils, having averaged just under 40 with the bat and having taken 22 wickets at a bowling average of 14.82. The experienced veteran has been a key player for the Tamils for several years and would often be relied open to give his words of wisdom on the field to the acting captains.

Page 50: and Financial Statement 2017-18 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club › images › annual_report_2018_digtial.pdf · Division 1 Masters: Tejesh Modi Division 2 Shepherds: Cullum Jones T20

Rajeev Benedict was also very impressive with the ball and would often be unlucky to not have more wickets to his name. He has played every game of the season and had taken 19 wickets having bowled more than 150 overs for the season, Rajeev bowled with a lot of heart and passion. The best individual bowling performance of the season would have to go to Thujan Sivananthan. His opening spell against the Wellington Collegians Falcon Hawks where he had picked up 5 wickets inside his first 6 overs of his opening spell went a long way to setting up an outright victory for the Tamils. He had ended with tidy figures of 5/50 in 11 overs on that day. Fielding is always an area where you can improve upon every week and we certainly did that. Led by Sarangan Sakthivel who had taken a record amount of catches (at least 12) the Tamils would always be very competitive when out on the field. Everyone at one time or another was not afraid to put their body on the line to stop some runs or to take a catch. This is an area that we as a team are always collectively working on to improve every game and will be looking to do so in the pre-season. Overall, this has been a very successful start to our new campaign in the 2-day comp under the Easts Club. The team is enjoying its cricket and the environment at the club, and would often go back to the club rooms to have a few drinks and mingle with the other teams. We have learnt a lot from our wins and even more from our losses. We will come back fitter and stronger next season and will be looking to take out the title. 3rd Grade Smoking Pineapples team report 2017-18 by Gordon Dry No report or stats received from Smoking Pineapples! The Smoking Pineapples had a mixed season with some good wins and a few forgettable losses thrown in. They finished 4th on the points table, which wasn’t a bad effort in a fairly tight competition. They have some pretty good players in their ranks, and when they are at full strength they could beat anyone in the grade. Probably their best game of the season was the outright win against Johnsonville by an innings and 157 runs, with Tim Banks getting 10-51 for the match and Luciano Colucci chalking up an excellent 137. Tim would have been the pick of the bowlers over the season with good support from Nathan Kirikino, Kerryn Friday and Justin Maxwell. Main contributors at the batting crease were Luciano, Roshan Rai, Nick Lunn and Jake Marsters Andy MacGregor is the guts of the team organisation and his tireless work in keeping the team together is much appreciated by me and also by his playing colleagues.

4th Grade Aces team season report 2017-18 by Joe Drysdale ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Aces turned out another strong squad for the 17/18 season. We wouldn’t say we were unlucky at another 2nd place finish in the 2 dayers but certainly annoyed. Having led the table from Matchday 1 the boys were pipped at the finish by Wainui by 1 point. First innings enough to secure the title for them with a washout on the final Saturday left a game in the balance undecided.

The season certainly had its highlights. In the first 2 dayer an emphatic rout by an innings and 80 runs against the Collegians Axemen had the boys home by 1:30pm and promised much more. Joe Drysdale had put them to the sword that morning with best figures of 9-5-17-9 leaving the Axemen rueing their choice of weapon. A to and fro 2 day win in the local derby against The Bats, after they had run riot on us in the 1 dayer, was probably the most rewarding.

With 2 matches left in the season the Aces let the title slip out of their grasp on day 2 of the match against Onslow. Having rolled Onslow for 69 to take a first Innings lead of 92 the Aces collapsed to 43 all out. Some accidental creative accounting by the Onslow scorer led to a total of 132, rather than 136, being required to win the match. At 134-9 Onslow won the game - 1 ball before a hat trick opportunity to seal a blushes saving victory for the Aces. A win, which would have all but secured the title for the boys, became a miserable loss but you can’t walk off after getting out for 43 with anyone to blame but yourselves. We look forward to renewing what has always been a fierce rivalry with the Onslow 4ths next season, a bouncy deck wouldn’t go amiss either.

Unlucky with injuries we hope to see a return in 18/19 of stalwart Ace Casey Greive, currently getting lost in the Himalayas, and exciting newcomer Matt Thompson whose success in his mere 20 overs this

season showed the Aces what a talent they may have procured. Babrak Rasool who took over the captaincy from injured Greive showed himself a natural leader, generous with praise - and his B & H’s week in week out but never hesitating to change things up when they were called for. Huge props to Henry Whiteman, a man who was never expecting to play so regularly but who filled in to plug gaps almost every weekend and cheers to Daz for his excellent work in getting the stats done for the boys.

4th Grade The Bats team season report 2017-2018 by Mike Keogh ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 2017/2018 season for The Bats was never short of drama, one of the greatest companies in cricket. We experienced a range of events, injuries and emotions never before seen in the lower grades. We lost our captain in pursuit of an education. Our faithful first change bowler, doyen of the field settings and resident commy put his back out fighting the boys in blue, rendering him an invalid for the remainder of the season; and played far too many games with only 8 souls. However the boys still managed to have a hell of a season to come away with fourth on the table with many personal and team milestones achieved throughout. I took the field this year as captain for the first time and was optimistic that we had a strong squad of players ready for our second year in the grade and to hopefully stamp our mark on the competition. Although my innermost desires of a top three finish were extinguished by the end of the season, The Bats still found a way to play some great cricket against some fine opponents. We were unable to come away with a win in the two-dayer against sworn rivals and clubmates The Aces. A match filled with tension and theatre and questions of who would reign supreme in our own war of the roses which saw Paul Matthews bring home his first 50+ score with striking aplomb. Rhys Sinclair unfortunately had to say goodbye to his season in this game with a duck, but not without an incredible spell of fast bowling which left opposition batsmen prodding and poking in the corridor. An unfortunate loss for The Bats when a win seemed possible, but showed the character and spirit of the team when the cards are down. Many of our matches saw some stunning catches taken by Nick Honey, showing all the characteristics of a true slipper, especially his penchant for a bit of chat with opposition batsmen, and all the while making promising starts opening the batting and putting the team in a good position. Evan Frost once again solidified his role as the all rounder of the team, consistently putting in outstanding performances with the ball and the bat. For Frosty the highlights perhaps being bringing the Bats home to our first outright win with his composed and powerful style of play.

Alongside him in that match also saw team bad boy Joe Sloane find some end of season form hitting crucial runs in partnership with Evan. He also showed promise with the ball after ignoring his penchant for short deliveries in the nets to pitch the ball up in the games and find some swing and consequently, wickets. This season also saw team Tasmanian devil Gabriel George Baker take his first 5 fa against the Sri Lankans and many more wickets throughout. Tastemaker Jason Foote spent more time on a plane than at the crease it seemed this year but he still found time to get a few scores, always with his signature flick of the wrist. Newcomer Guy Turner showed resilience in the face of adversity (his front pad), by getting some crucial runs for the boys and always having bounds of energy in the field to boost the team when morale was low. Not to mention his propensity for taking catches mid-air. Newcomer Alex Davidson showed real promise with the bat and I’m sure a few net sessions wouldn’t go astray in aiding some big scores next season. Highlight of the season had to be clawing our way out of a first innings deficit on the first day against Wainui, playing away from home with only eight players and what felt like 30 degree heat. Felix Faisandier showing that opposition bowling attacks may have been giving him throwdowns, scoring a crucial 85 in the second innings to give us a platform for Isaiah Wilson to take a crucial 5 fa in the second to take what I believe to be our hardest fought win. Our first outright win in the season came against the affable Bulldogs, another great win as we played both days with fewer than 11 players and was a great finale to the season. 4th Grade Bulldogs team season report 2017-18 by Patrick Arnold ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was a rather forgettable season for the Bulldogs, who finished without a win in the one day competition and low down on the two day table with a single win (and a win by default). In a reverse of last season, this year we were generally able to bowl well and take wickets but unable to bat in partnerships and score good runs. Performances were also affected by a struggle for numbers throughout the season, with a few staple Bulldogs leaving over the season: Josh Hawkridge returned to the UK creating a gap at the top of the order, and Kieran ‘The Heat’ Ray getting his priorities all wrong and choosing kayak fishing over cricket and creating a gap with the new ball. We’ll be on a recruitment drive over the off season. Kuntal headed the bowling lists by some margin with 22 wickets at a tick under 16 each. Other good bowling contributions came from Kieran, Brent Thompson, Pasan Mohotti and the ever present Carl Gill. Batting-wise James McNamara topped the run scoring and averages and was the only Bulldog to hit more than one 50. Alex ‘Stonewall’ Fensome also topped 300 runs at a strike rate which frustrated our opponents but was brilliant two-day viewing. Alex managed to dig the team out of a hole on several occasions, scoring three 40s and facing more balls in each innings than most Bulldogs faced in the season. These innings secured a draw against Wainuiomata, and first innings points against club rivals The Aces. The highlight of the season was a game against the Collegians Axemen, when Kieran Ray took 7-43 to set up the game, before Dave Corry (with a team season high score of 80) and James -McNamara combined with a 100 partnership. In the second innings Kieran completed his 10-for, with the ever reliable Kuntal Patel chipping in with a hattrick. Another Bulldog who needs a mention is Jamie ‘Johnny’ Blonde, who’s ‘Don Neely junior’ scoreboard was the talk of the opening rounds, along with multi-coloured scoring technique and team sandwiches (and the odd beer at Moon). Overall, while results didn’t go our way, it was an enjoyable season where we managed to avoid the worst of the umpiring. Thanks to the other teams in the grade, particularly the Aces and Bats, and especially Gordie and Ben for all their work at the club.

Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 1 Taxes team season report 2017-18 by Matt Godfrey ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taxes started the 17/18 season looking to vote in a new captain due to the vacancy left by Paul Young who left to make cricket bats for Laver and Wood in the Hawkes Bay. Matt Godfrey was appointed for some strange reason, just pipping out Ross Grounsell in a close vote.

Well Ross took this to heart, he was the heavy preseason favourite to get the captaincy and he showed he is the true leader by hitting 232 not out in the first game. This innings was the highest ever by a Taxes player, which has an 86 year history, but just as amazing it was hit in a 40 over match when only 30 years ago Taxes was playing unlimited overs! To put this knock into context, the next highest score was 50 by a fill in and the northerly was so strong on Kilbirnie Park 3A that day, that our BBQ was sent cartwheeling into the pool car park.

Over the next 5 games Taxes (with Matt losing every toss), went on to bowl a few teams out relatively cheaply, the lowest opposition score being 73 and the highest being 183 as well as a default. The best of these games was Phil Mildenhall and Gavin Byford putting on a solid partnership for the 5th wicket to see us home against a very good Shoe Clinic side

Then came the dreaded pre-Christmas game where we had 4 of our top 5 batsmen out due to other commitments, We had 2 school kids filling in against a Rambos XI team that fielded a few faces never seen in the grade before and never to be seen again. We lost this game fairly badly and they say winning and losing is a habit!! We then went on to lose to Taita after a batting collapse and just like that, our season was on thin Ice as the grade is usually won by a team losing only a maximum of 2 games.

Fortunately the boys dug deep - we got a new spinner Harry Singh and

won the following game just before we were to play defending champions Johnsonville Falcons. The good thing about playing this team is you don't need to umpire as nothing is given anyway, but an early dropped catch ended up costing us over 100 runs, setting up a total of 300 to chase after a decent 4fa by Phil. Another great knock from Ross (118) lead the chase but we came up 28 runs short.

With the season effectively over a lot of the lads had their minds elsewhere but being a competitive bunch we followed up every loss with a win. A good finish to the season was a 10 wicket win, Harry picking up a 5fa.

Taxes are a social cricket team and we vote for dick of the day and MVP awards every game. This years winner of the MVP award goes to our best bowler Chris Offord who had his usual consistent year, picking up 22 wickets at an rpo of 3.87, pretty good for artificials. The Dick of the Year goes to our best batsmen and all rounder of the year, Ross Grounsell, scoring 512 runs, picking up 8 wickets, but consistently doing dick things to keep him down to earth at the end of the day.

Unlucky year Taxes, we will come back stronger next year"

Intercity 1 Day Grade – Division 1 – The Shoe Clinic team season report 2017-18 by Sam Hyde

This year we were lucky to pick up a new sponsor Haarlem who sponsored some new gear including three brand new bats. Unfortunately our illustrious sponsor Nick Robbers destroyed the bat during our very first Net :). However, Hamish French came through and had this replaced.

Johnsonville Falcons deservedly won the grade this year and we were the only team able to beat them this year. Typically we started the season slow, but then came back strong in the 2nd half and were unlucky not to have come 2nd.

We scored lots of runs again this year with multiple hundreds of which Shane Johnston hit the team’s highest score of 182. And of course at the other end Scott Pender chimed in with 126 and together they hit the teams highest ever partnership of 308. Stu Davenport & Geoff Glynan both scored regularly as did most of the team.

On the bowling front our new resident quick bowler Stefan McIvor recorded our best figures this year of 7 wickets for 23 off 7 overs (still miles away from the team best of 7 for 7 off 7 by Matt Spence).

Jack Mills cleaned up the fielding award with 14 catches and a run out. Combined with his bowling and batting he came very close to winning the player of the year award.

Without a doubt however Sam Dick bowled the best and most consistently in Shoe Clinic history. Week in week out he bamboozled batters with his unplayable in-swingers and was the difference in our win against Johnsonville. Sams best figures were 6 for 19 off 7.2 overs. And with a total of 29 tickets Sam picked up both the bowler and player of the year award.

Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 1 - Masters team season report 2017-2018 by Hamant Patel ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our first season in Division 1 and it started with first 2 game's against the top 2 team's from previous season - both resulted in losses, never did get a second chance to play against Johnsonville (that game would have shown our true abilities). Towards the end of the season Easts Masters were aiming for the 2nd placing - the chances were great until...the last game of the season the only weekend It rained and the game was abandoned 5pm - whilst the team below us, their game was defaulted. So we settled for 3rd placing - still a great effort from the boys right throughout the season with some fine individual and team efforts in between the extras (was our team player too). Some game's we achieved close to 300 runs in an innings and on one occasion well over 350 runs, but sometimes we were defending low inning's runs.

Our top runs scorer was Chintan Mehta - 834 RUNS, 4 centuries (107n.o., 148n.o., & 101 & 159 ), 14 Innings , Average 64.15. Top wicket taker - Sanjay Dahya 28 Wickets, 75.6 Overs, 331 Runs, Run Rate 4.38 , Overs per wicket 2.70 . Best Bowling in a Match - 5.2 Overs. 6 wickets. Some other batting stats worth mentioning: Tejas Modi 499 runs, 3 x 50's, 2 x 100's (highest 158), 10 innings 49.90 average Urmit Patel 448 runs, 1 x 123, 16 innings, 29.87 average Sanjay Dahya 379 runs, 1 x 50, 16 innings, 27.07 average

The team had some brilliant fielder's – Jainesh Patel, Chintan Mehta, Tejash Modi, and Urmit Patel, all outstanding. However, Urmit Patel, wicket keeper, was the pick of the bunch. Hi grit, determination, and guts to stand up close to the stumps against fast bowlers, often without a helmet. He saved tons of wide deliveries and byes that could have gone to the back boundary. Took some ripper catches and tore off some quick stumpings. He also played an excellent role as vice captain. Many thanks Urmit. With Tejash a sharp slip catcher, Chintan an excellent point fielder, Jainesh an outstanding all round fielder – and Hamant jumping around the ball like a springbok!!!

Some other bowling worth mentioning - Chintan Metha 97 overs, 27 wickets, 524 runs, 5.40 run rate per over, 3.59 overs per wicket. A very good season – see you all back on deck next year!! Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 2 Shepherds team season report 2017-18 by Cullum Jones ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pre-season started on a sombre note for the Shepherds, with the passing of long serving member Alan Tilley. Alan was highly thought of amongst the squad and it showed with a large number of past & present players turning up to his service to remember our good friend. A special thanks to derby rivals the Easts Taxes who also came along to show their support. A class act, they’re a real credit to both themselves and the club.

With only 5 players returning from last season, it was always going to be a tough ask to field a team for the 2017/18 season. However Gordie came up trumps and with half a dozen new players, the Shepherds survived for another year. Our on field results probably reflected the rebuilding phase we found ourselves in, and with a new captain at the helm we ended the season with a 3 win, 11 loss record. With only 1 hundred & 1 five wicket haul all season it’s easy to see we struggled with both bat & ball. Our fielding however was spectacular.

My highlights for the season came inevitably from our 3 wins.

1. A classy hundred from Greg Scobie vs Stokes Valley to earn our first win of the season

2. Alex Hann scoring his debut 50 for the Shepherds to earn victory against Brooklyn

3. Defending 155 against Petone thanks to a quick fire 55 from Robert Shanks, two key run outs by Ben Leary, and figures of 3/19 from Chris Martin

It was also great to see our fighting spirit come out in many games this year and I’m glad to say we never gave up even though results weren’t going our way. This was evident in our second game against Petone

66

which even though ended in heavy defeat saw some memorable moments. With the ball, Ozzy took 4 late wickets to rip through Petone’s middle order. While our last two batsmen (Andrew McLean 70, Ben Leary 66 *) put on a 150 run stand to frustrate the opposition and take the game into the final over. Brilliant Stuff….

Stats: Our top batsman was Greg Scobie again this year, scoring 3 fifties and a hundred. However I’m looking forward to seeing Riju George bat more regularly next season and pushing Scobes for his crown.

Batter Innings Not Outs Runs Average Riju George 3 0 113 37.67 Greg Scobie 13 0 448 34.46 Ben Leary 15 2 258 19.85 Robert Shanks 9 2 131 18.71 Alex Hann 8 1 129 18.43

Our top bowler was AJ Kumar with an impressive average of 13 runs per wicket. Unfortunately AJ’s performances earned him a call up to the higher grades and robbed him of being our leading wicket taker.

Bowler Overs Runs Wickets Average AJ Kumar 44 248 19 13.05 Cullum Jones 75 348 22 15.82 Mike Neilson 34 176 11 16.00 Chris Martin 26 113 7 16.14 Ben Leary 19 95 4 23.75

I would like to personally thank Greg, Ben, Peter & Ozzy for their support and advice this year. It was a steep learning curve for me as a new captain and your help was greatly appreciated.

Thanks for another enjoyable season and bring on 2018 / 19

T20 Section 2 The Lads XI team season report 2017-18 by Sam Rees ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 2017/18 summer of T20 cricket for the Lads Xl had a lot of promise. After narrowly missing out on taking out the competition last year by placing second, the boys were hungry to get back out in the middle and do one better. The offseason training had been nothing short of excellence. There had been plenty of social occasions throughout the winter where many beers and Codys (for the less sophisticated members) had been drunken. A stand out during this time was the young buck Mac Ashby, who is always one to put his hand up, and put the foot down . Was this a sign to come for the season, was this to be the young man’s breakout season, only time would tell. The season start begun how the previous season finished, with a great victory. A solid all round team performance at home with multiple players contributing with the bat, but not kicking on, and some great line and length balls. The morale was high after this first game, was this a sign of the season to come... Over the course of the year a standout for the Lads was the fielding. And when we say standout, we mean standout for being absolutely appalling. It wouldn’t be uncommon for there to be more dropped catches than runs scored by certain players during a game, and perhaps over the season. The standout MVP in this facet of the game was somewhat surprisingly a player by the name of Matthew Hickey. A man that is quite often talked about for being the most athletic of the team. It is not uncommon to see this man running all around the city, but then again, maybe this is because he only has his learners. Matthew took out the MVP award for most dropped catches during the season. As the season continued it was not to be a repeat of the previous year, there were a lot of great wins through the season, but it wasn’t uncommon for these to be followed up by a loss or two. This could be put down to the team missing one of the twin towers who spearhead the Lads bowling line-up, Mr Anthony “The Big Show” Blewman, or it could be due to the departure of the skip Jimmy “The Hit man” White half way through the season, who was chasing love halfway around the world.

68

No matter what it was, the Lads struggled to stay consistent with the bat and ball. Despite this there were a lot of great memories and performances from the Lads. With the bat the Lads only managed the single 100 and this came from the capable hands of Paul Churchman on a grass wicket in Kilbirnie. With 19 odd to get off the last to bring up the mark, the man didn’t disappoint. Jimmy White was unlucky not to bring up his first 100, but was given out for 93, and Sam Rees with a season high of 82* could not get his token one 100 per season. Other standouts were George Metson who always caused trouble for the bowlers, Matthew Hickey who brought up his maiden 50 for the Lads in magical fashion with some glorious sixes (The Lads know what each six gets the man), and an ever consistent Andy White who averaged near 60 and was the rock that kept the Lads in most contests. With the ball for the first half of the season James White was always economical and hard to put away, George Metson when he stopped bowling spin proved to be a quality bowler who will be an asset for seasons to come, and Brad Dobson who somehow always managed to pick up wickets every game - were top bowlers for the Lads. But the standout of the year was the Spin King, Louis Metson. This man was the only spin bowler to open the bowling in the grade, and boy did he bowl well. Always economical, and always taking wickets this man was an asset for the Lads. Honourable mentions to J. Ramsden for being consistent through the middle, Andy White for his Glen McGrath type length, and Mac Ashby when he managed to control his bowling and not bowl over people’s heads was a great addition. Unfortunately the season didn’t hit the heights of the season before, but there were a lot of great memories and beers shared with the Lads. The core of the squad will be there for season 2018/19 and we will be welcoming back Vincent Peter McGlashan Schumacher. The teams MVP, and by some margin, was Andy White. He was the complete package with bat and ball, and often put on the gloves. The Lads are very lucky to have such a talented man in the squad.

T20 Section 2 Tigers team season report 2017/18 by Duncan McIntyre ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The saying “it’s a Marathon not a sprint” is used regularly to describe many events or competitions. The same can’t be said for the game of Twenty twenty cricket. It’s definitely a continual sprint! Results wise the team had a mixed season with some good wins mixed in with some close losses which we put down to cricket being cricket! The team overall is just starting to gel and it takes a bit of time to understand the ebbs and flows of this quick unpredictable game and how to apply the right players to the right situations. It’s a skilful side and we will have taken the “learnings” from the season and now have to check our processes and review the way we do things. We need to concentrate on our own game and control what we can and the rest will take care of itself – but seriously it’s been refreshing to face a new challenge and have to adapt very quickly on the run. There were some excellent performances from some old heads and new faces who continued to grow in confidence through the season and learn from previous games which is something to respect. It takes time to adapt to a new team and to see some new faces feel more and more comfortable with their place in the team on the park and even more important, socially, was superb. They complimented the others well and some of the usual candidates chimed in with some superb performances with bat and ball. We have started on the blueprint for next year’s season and its fair to say we have grown our squad – it appeals to more people as the start time of 2 and the finish time of 5 is far easier to stomach – especially since we are about six Heinekens deep at the Easts Rooms before any side on the beautiful Kilbirnie Park finally finishes. A massive thanks to all the lads in the team who helped manage and organise the team through the season and to our skipper. Can I also say an even larger thank you to the Evergreen Gordon Dry

T20 Section 2 Stags team season report 2017-18 by Michael Lee ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After an extremely dominant debut season in Wellington’s third division, facing defeat only once on their way to the title, the Easts’ Stags were looking to fight for higher glory. The long and leisurely off-season had a clear effect on the Stags’ as they saw defeat in the first two matches of grading. The previous season’s recipient of the Stagiest Stag award however, began the campaign firing. The Big Mahn clocked his maiden half-century making 72 in the first match, and followed it up with a 70* in the subsequent fixture. Unfortunately, the rest of the team weren’t able to demonstrate the same passion or desire. Coming into the final grading game, the Stags knew they needed a win to ensure they weren’t placed back into a league they felt they had outgrown. The bowlers were yet to show the devastating form they held throughout the previous campaign. This saw them allow Karori to make 174/3 from their 20. The batsmen were hungry. The Big Mahn made 52 from 26 for his third consecutive half-tonne, with last season’s Batsman of the Year, Marshy Jr. making 51 and carrying his bat at the other end. First drop Grayson dropped jaws with his devastating 41 from just 11 deliveries, featuring six maximums, a boundary four, and a single single. December 2, the Stags join Wellington’s second division and begin to establish their home fortress at Miramar Park. WIth the Stags’ bowlers yet to find their groove, the injection of debutant Viks Vaporub provided the inspiration the rest of the attack needed; taking three wickets for just nine runs in his first outing. Chasing 154 the home team found themselves five down for only 56 runs. The two most capped Stags walked out to the crease. With Jammin’ closing out the innings with his maiden 50 and the Awapuni Express ending on 46*, the Stags chased down Johnsonville’s total in just the 14th over. After starting the season well at home, the Stags travelled for their next two fixtures away from home, and they suffered defeat at the hands of

Vic Uni and Onslow. The Stags went into the Christmas break hungry to taste victory again in the new year. 20th of January 2018, Derby Day. The Stags were eager to show who the top Easts’ franchise was in division two. The Durry Punchers didn’t see it coming. With Wogsy’s 2 wickets for 9 runs holding down one end, the Awapuni Express managed the first ever Easts’ Stags’ five-wicket-bag, taking 5 for 10. The Durry Punchers punched out at a total of 30. Skipper Lee Ka-Chiu and Grayson didn’t bother to smell the roses and got the job done in 1.3 overs. One week later the Stags found themselves in their second Easts’ derby of the season, one pitch over at Miramar Park. The Easts’ Lads sought to prevail where the Durry Punchers had not. The Stags looked to come out firing with Grayson and Jack up front. However the first few overs were a struggle and featured a maiden for the Lads XI. Jack found himself on an uncomfortable 1 from 14 deliveries and the batsmen decided to shake things up. The openers brought up the 100 run partnership in the 10th over, with the Stags eventually losing 6 wickets but making their way to 181. Grayson taking the Stags record for all-time highest innings total of 97 runs coming from 40 deliveries and featuring 10 maximums. Veteran Stags’ bowlers Jammin, Sugarman, Chico and the Awapuni Express shared the wickets to end the Lads’ chase in the 14th over at 100 runs. The Stags first away win of the season came at Liardet Park on the 3rd of February. Viks Vaporub’s devastating 4 wickets for 7 runs helping to restrict the Stubbies to 136. The ‘Puni Express and Marshy Jr. both making scores in the forties as the Stags chased down the total in the 18th over. The following week, they found themselves at the same ground. With a low fog resting over the Mornington ground, the Stags put in a good all round bowling performance to keep Vic Uni to a low total of 136. At 35 for 5, the Stags were well into their bowlers. Matt ‘Heath’ Thompson and Sugarman reminisced over old times as they carried the team in a clutch move through to the win without dropping another wicket. Sugarman ending with 33* from 25, and Thompson with 48* from 39. The Stags

away form was starting to look up with back-to-back victories. The rest of February saw the Stags to two more home victories, ending the month with a perfect record. A 22 run win over the Karori Fangarangs featured a 67* for Jack and three-fer for both Chico and Wogsy. This was followed by a third derby win of the campaign, against the Tigers. It was business as usual for the Stags, restricting the opposition to 135, and chasing it down in just 16 overs. Big John announced during the post-match he was “seeing beach balls” when he smacked 65* off 41 deliveries. Unfortunately, an away loss to the league leaders at Melrose Park put the Stags mathematically out of the running for the title. Unable to chase down the required 193 at the Baboon’s Backyard. However, the Stags were determined to demonstrate their passion for the game with a big win to cap the season off the following week. The final match of the season. A battle for 2nd and 3rd in the league standings. Somewhat of a grudge match for the Stags due to some unsporting conduct from a member of the Onslow squad when these teams faced off earlier in the season. ‘Duke’, the protagonist, was once again in full force, taking on the Stags from the crease with bat and mouth. Unfortunately for him, he wasn’t quite ready for the Stags’ premier leg spin bowler Wogsy, who baited the hothead into a drive down the ground. Skipper Spiller Lee Ka-Chiu launched himself high in the air to take an absolute screamer well above his head with both mits. Let’s just say the game didn’t get better for Duke, having to be removed from umpire by his own captain for a dubious decision against the Big Mahn and threatening to fight the square-leg fielder. The Stags inevitably found themselves chasing 133 at a ground they had struggled with in the past. That wasn’t the case on this occasion. The captain and his vice walked out together, eager to close out the season with the same poise and grace the Stags are known for. Their 94 run partnership came off a blistering 44 deliveries. Spiller Lee making his maiden half-century with 53 from 21, and the Big Mahn contributing 42 from 26. Losing just 2 wickets in the process, the Stags brought home the win 3 balls into the 15th over. A satisfying end to the season.

T20 Section 3 Cobras team season report 2017-18 by Gordon Dry ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No report or stats received from Cobras! My prediction last year that this team could win the grade in 2017/18 came true when the Cobras finished the season level on points with Easts Goons, but took the title on run rate. Team captain and chief organiser Scott Barnett is a Cobras stalwart and puts in the hard yards pulling the team up by its bootstraps. A good front man and a handy cricketer, he’s the glue that keeps things together and a very necessary element in keeping the team functioning. On top of all that he had an enormous season scoring over 600 runs including 109 off 32 balls and 129 off 57 balls. Others to chip in with runs and wickets were Jono Fair, Ty Phillips, Clinton Parkes and Stewart Nelson A successful season with the promise of more to come in 2018/19.

Hell I think we’re coming right!!! Top run scorer Jack Langston – 232 runs from 12 innings at an average of 19.3. Top wicket taker – Vincent Papatsoumas with 13 wickets. Best fielder – Levi Harris. Some truly spectacular slip catches. His passion and heart in the field was truly unmatched. Honourable mention – Matty Russel – for being a light to guide us in the most dark places. Up the Ting!! Next season will be our best yet!!

T20 Section 3 Goons team season report 2017-18 by Corey Lawrence -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Goons – WHO ARE YA?!? The Goons were established in 2017. A few mates got together and became brothers, starting a legacy that is now known as the Goons! We aren’t your normal cricket team, we never play in cricket whites but instead we play in a theme that has been chosen for that week. Basically, we are a bunch of piss heads with a cricket problem. Off-season: After coming out of their first season of cricket the Goons decided they needed to put in some extra work over the break if they wanted to be competitive and take out the prestigious Division 3 title. And that they did…. The Goons could be found regularly down at the Rongotai Cricket Nets perfecting their trade. And yet to be known at this point, how much of a difference this extra work paid off… Dividends baby!! The Goons started their season off with some great wins… and they just wouldn’t stop! The Goons went into the Xmas break with 6 consecutive wins with plenty of stellar performances Notable Performances in the 17/18 season: v. Uni. Jonah Lomu Rugby – ENERGY! – The Sean-kini-bikini.The Goons were on a roll! However, they were about to be put to the testwith their closest game yet. They got off to a great start before facing aheavy collapse in the batting order. Most notably was Serge De Ladiesgetting out for 16, posting his lowest and soberest performance for theseason. However, a partnership from Andy Ellis and Robin Yates saw theGoons through to finish with a total of 198. In the field, Andy Boy wasgetting smacked around a bit but still took 3 wickets. Sean Bridgewearing his number 1’s, a mankini, threw some spin on things taking animpressive wicket. Also, specialist slow bowler Corey bagged somewickets and kept the run rate low. The Jonah Lomu team came within 9runs before the last wicket was taken with a run out – by call up TipeneFriday! What a game!v. Karori Silly Nannies – A Dot Ball is a Good Ball!!An under-strength Goons side made the trip out to Karori Park to take onthe Silly Nannies. Missing key players – Serge De Ladies, James Proctor,

79

Page 85: and Financial Statement 2017-18 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club › images › annual_report_2018_digtial.pdf · Division 1 Masters: Tejesh Modi Division 2 Shepherds: Cullum Jones T20

Andy Ellis, but more importantly the Vice-Captain and best wicket keeper in the Division… Sone Finai! The batting order was drawn from the hat in typical Goons fashion. The opening pair of Sokhom and call up Paul were sent out first. Both very eager for runs… Sokhom the 1st to go fishing. Throwing his rod out for one that was a bit wide, sending it in the air for an easy catch. Declan then went out with a lot of ENERGY and confidence, however was quickly back on the bench with a quack. Fiu did one better, and added some gold to his quack that followed. The forecast was not looking pretty, however a partnership from Bridge and Yates saw the team through the storm… until London Bridge has fallen down. Jordan was next up, forming another good partnership with Yates ticking up our score. Call up Georgie showed some class with bat – Goons finishing on a total of 140. In the field – The ever-consistent bowlers J. Mears and J. Mills (M & M’s) opened the bowling keeping the Nannies at bay with few runs and many a DOT BALL’s a GOOD BALL!! However, wickets were what the Goons needed and so R. Yates stepped up. Having perfected his spin in the off-season, he was too hot2handle for the Nannies, taking wickets at will. Alan also nabbing a wicket, while Bridge put on a clinic to take a few wickets also. Goons by 40 runs. v. East Cobras – Bitter tase of defeat – While the Goons catch defeat, Others are catching sunsets. It was explained as the Mother of all hidings. A dark day in the Goons history books. The Goons suffered their first defeat, but not just any defeat… The Mother of all hidings. The Goons were chasing down 200+ runs. The Goons decided to be humble fellas and take the loss in true Goon fashion finishing on a lovely score of 69. v. Brooklyn Windmuppets – Goons Nail down win while Sone-one gets Nails done. Equal on the table, this was an important game for the Goons to get their season back on track after a tough defeat. Victor opened the batting for his first game back. The Goons were off to a rough start, possibly still some jitters from last week, with Vic, Decs and Andy all heading to the sideline early in the innings leaving Serge to solider on. Captain Mears headed out to anchor the ship. Along with Serge De Ladies, the pair slowed the celebrations for the Windmuppets. After securing a buffer, Mears then decided to play some shots before falling. Jimmy was then sent out. This man saw red, hitting boundaries all guns blazing. Most

Page 86: and Financial Statement 2017-18 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club › images › annual_report_2018_digtial.pdf · Division 1 Masters: Tejesh Modi Division 2 Shepherds: Cullum Jones T20

notable was Serge De Ladies lasting the innings with a great knock of 72. This gave the Goons a total of 162. In the field - J & M’s opened the attack. With some great line and length, the pair bagged some early wickets. Yates coming off a rough week, bagged a rare maiden for the Goons showing his mettle. Andy Ellis also bowled well bagging a couple of wickets. Needing 50 off 5 overs… some tight bowling from Ellis, Mears, Hollis and Proctor at the business end sent them home packing. Goons win by 30 runs. v. North City Whitby Wides – Defence wins games – A dot ball is a good ball strikes again! The Goons had a tough task this day. Some thought it may even be impossible!... The Goons proved anything is possible! The Goons went out to bat first. With a shaky start the Goons were staring down the barrel of the gun at only 50 odd runs for 7 wickets…However, Captain Mears with his never say never attitude stepped out to bat and got the Goons through to a defendable, but not pretty, 96 total. v. Brooklyn Cricket Club Jamaicans – The King in the Easts. Goons were out in the field first. The Goons started well, however there was a turning moment where the run rate started to rise – some will say the Goons were star-struck playing their first and only game at the home stadium of Kilbirnie Park, others might say they were not used to playing on a Sunday…but a true Goon fan would know it was because Sergeant Serge De Ladies was not in the field organising the team. Serge still on his bender had missed the kick-off… However, second in Command, Sean Bridge stepped up taking over somewhat of the organising. The Goons managed to get them all out for 162, with Sokhom Un recording the longest over in Goons history with an impressive 20 ball over. Into the batting now… King Sean the III and Jadrah headed out to open the batting… Little did Sean know that on this day he would be dethroned and a new King would be born! Jadrah facing the first ball… watching closely as the bowler took his run up… watching even closer as the ball left the bowlers hand… watching the ball even closer as the ball bounced… then in the blink of an eye… he took his swing closing his eyes, swinging with all his might!!... he missed... straight down into the middle wicket the ball went… And the Goons erupted into Celebration as they witnessed the birth of a new King... King Jadrah the IV!! Jadrah had now joined an exclusive club, that of which his opening partner was also

81

a member. However, on Jadrah’s journey to becoming King he has dethroned Sean Bridge who will now be known as Prince Sean Bridge. Following this, a few Goons were also put away quickly, making this game look like it could be our demise. With the Goon’s deep in trouble Andy Ellis was up next. The man with the fire red head also had fire in his eyes as he scored an impressive 85 not out! Goons win by 4 wickets. The Goons also out Jamaicanned the Jamaicans with their compulsory theme of the week. Other Goon News:

• With 3 games to go in the season, the top of the table team slipped losing one of their matches. This resulted in the Goons being 1st equal on the home stretch of the competition.

• With things tied up at the top of the table, the Goons headed their last game of the season as favourites. Unfortunately, the Goons fell on their own sword, losing the final game placing them 2nd on the table.

The Goons will be back for 2018/19 season, batting bigger and bowling faster than ever…

Special mentions: Mr Cricket – Alan Hughes. Always collecting the match ball. The Goons that stayed committed all the way to the end of the season – True Goons. Petone Groom or Goon – Great design for the logo of the hats. Jordan Mills for organising Raffle prizes and Sokhom Un for selling most tickets. Sone Finai and Serge De Ladies for hosting a few team events this season. Mason Lawrence for getting the Goons a chilli bin. Hataitai bowling club for paying back our bond when we went well over the time.

Goons Season Stats: Batting:

• Serge De Ladies – 593 Runs • Andy Ellis – 229 Runs • Joey Mears – 179 Runs. • Sean Bridge – 152 Runs.

Bowling: • Robin Yates – 18 Wickets. • Andy Ellis – 16 Wickets. • Corey Lawrence – 12 Wickets. • Jordan Mills – 11 Wickets.

Noteable performers: • Alan Hughes – aka Mr Cricket. An impressive 10 wickets and

wasn’t bad with bat at 87 runs. • Sokhom Un – aka De-Farmercist. Took out the highly challenged

club award for best hands in the business – Fielder of the year for East! But more importantly for the Goons!

• Sone Finai – best wicket keeper in the comp. Week in and week out he took those balls like a champ! Did not complain once, even when they cumming at him fast.

• Robin, Joey and Jimmy – all not far off being on top of the charts stats.

• Andy Ellis – Making it to the top of the charts in both stats coming in at 2nd.

Goons Awards: Best Batsman: Serge De Ladies This man was wielding that bat around better than Luke Skywalker with a lightsaber or Aragon with Andúril in the final film – De Ladies would say better looking as well. He batted the Goons to many a great victory! And was also the key organiser of the Goons fielding set up, resulting in many a Dot ball is a good ball. Best Bowler: Robin Yates The man put in some work during the off season, perfecting his spin bowling. For a crooked man he also had a very straight and true bowl to fall back on. This resulted in Robin taking wickets at will. Taking and never giving, the man was a thief! Most improved: Corey Lawrence Seeing this man this season you would have thought he played cricket his whole life! Especially after his previous season. Corey took the feedback from the coaches and went away in the off season to practice.

A specialist in slow bowling, with good line and length, he lost his virginity this season bagging his 1st wicket and 11 more to follow. However, he will never forget his first Robin Yates down at the cricket nets xx. Most Ducks – The Prestigous Chris Martin Award: Declan Hay This was tightly contested this season with regular ducker Jack away for most of the season. It was tough with Fiu and Declan both tied on 4 ducks each… after looking at the run rate of these two Goons with Fiu at 68 and Declan at 67 it was then decided. The 2017/18 quacker of the year… Declan Hay!!

Goons Squad for 2017/18 Season: Joey Mears; Sone Finai; Alan Hughes; Andy Ellis; Declan Hay; Fiu

T20 Womens Wildcats team season report 2017-18 by Gordon Dry After cleaning up the grade regularly in recent seasons, the Wildcats suffered a minor setback – getting pipped for the grade championship in 2017/18. When they are at full strength they are more than a match for the other teams in the grade, so I’ll be looking for them to bounce back next season. The team was well lead and organised by Sammy Lewis and Tess Ure-Bowman and they did a splendid job of marshalling the troops! Sammy, her sister Penny and Tess were strong contributors all season, whilst Alex Karantze, Sophie Wilkinson, Tempest Cooper, Jamie Berry, Ro Brown and Whetu Muraahi-Martin all put in some good performances.

Junior Section season report 2017-18 by Brian Gardner The 2017-18 chapter of the junior club provided a fresh new start with changes to the junior convenor and new committee. Paul and I took over in the winter of last year and quickly established our own ideas and worked with some fantastic people to help build a new vision for the club. Our main objective is to have more kids playing cricket. Behind this we needed a viable financial model which is both affordable and realistic with the ever growing costs overall, and a structure for coaches and parents to feel comfortable in stepping in to help. We had again his year over 30 teams in the junior club and had strong showings over many of the grades. A real highlight was the growth in girls cricket, the club fielding two teams for the first time in the Sunday leagues. Paul and I also wanted to incorporate a sense of community and family within the club. We created some of the following to help with our vision which has turned out to be really popular: - Inter club days with family bbq - Parents quiz night - Development program for years 4-7 on Sundays - Fundraiser with Scots College involving a special function with Sir Ian Botham for a nights entertainment - 8 Coaches went through either NZ Cricket Level 1 or 2 coaching courses, then assisted other coaches in the club. - Seven teams competed at Riverbend and put in a good showing on behalf of the Club. Finally this year the coaches and local dads got the chance to team up, rather than just at the nets, and play in the first Junior Dads Invitational XI. This was a great night down at Kilbirnie Park and it was fantastic to see all the families supporting and sharing in dinner and drinks afterwards.

Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club Financial Statements for the year ended 30th April 2018

Audit Report to the Members of Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club

I have audited the attached financial statements on pages 91 to 95 . The financial statements provide information about the past financial performance of the Club and its financial position as at 30th April 2018. This information is stated in accordance with the accounting policies set out on pages 96 to 99.

Management’s Responsibilities

Management is responsible for the preparation of financial statements which fairly reflect the financial position of the Club as at 30th April 2018 and of the results of operations for the year ended 30th April 2018.

Auditor’s Responsibilities

It is my responsibility to express an independent opinion on the financial statements presented by management and report my opinion to you.

Basis of Opinion

An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence relevant to the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. It also includes assessing: • the significant estimates and judgements made by management

in the preparation of the financial statements, and• whether the accounting policies are appropriate to the Club’s

circumstances, consistently applied and adequately disclosed.

I conducted my audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards in New Zealand except that my work was limited as explained below. I planned and performed my audit so as to obtain all the information and explanations which I considered necessary in order to provide me with sufficient evidence to give reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from material misstatements,

89

Page 95: and Financial Statement 2017-18 Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club › images › annual_report_2018_digtial.pdf · Division 1 Masters: Tejesh Modi Division 2 Shepherds: Cullum Jones T20

whether caused by fraud or error. In forming my opinion I also evaluated the overall adequacy of the presentation of information in the financial statements.

Qualified Opinion

My examination of revenue, because of its nature, was limited to comparison of recorded amounts with bank deposits. Whilst I have no reason to believe that there has been any unrecorded revenue, there are no practical audit procedures to confirm this. In this respect alone I have not obtained all the information and explanations that I have required. In my opinion, except for adjustments that might have been found to be necessary had I been able to obtain sufficient evidence concerning revenue: • proper accounting records have been kept by the Club as far

as appears from my examination of those records; and• the financial statements on pages 91 to 95 ;

- comply with generally accepted accounting practice; and- give a true and fair view of the financial position of the Club as

at 30th April 2018 and the results of its operations for the year ended on that date.

Independence

When carrying out the audit I followed the independence requirements of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand. Other than the audit, while I have played cricket for the Club, I have not been involved in the club’s financial operations or management, during the period under review.

My audit was completed on 25th June 2018 and my qualified opinion is expressed as at that date.

Tax The Club is exempt from income tax. The Club is registered for GST purposes. Income and expenditure items are shown net of GST. GST is accounted for on an invoice basis. Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents comprise deposits with banks and other utilities, bank and cash balances. Deposits are included when they have a maturity of no more than three months from the date of acquisition. Term Deposits At each balance date the Club assesses whether there is any objective evidence that a term deposit is impaired. After initial recognition the term deposits are measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method. For term deposits, impairment is established when there is objective evidence that the Club will not be able to collect amounts due according to the original terms of the deposit. Significant financial difficulties of the bank or financial institution, probability that they will enter bankruptcy and default in payments are considered indicators that a deposit is impaired. Receivables Receivables are recognised at the original invoice amount less impairment losses. Property, Plant and Equipment Property, plant and equipment are stated at cost or fair value less accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Additions The cost of an item of property, plant and equipment is recognised as an asset only when it is probable that future economic benefits or service potential associated with the item will flow to the Club and the cost of the item can be measured reliably. Disposals Where an item of plant and equipment is disposed of, the gain or loss recognised in the statement of financial performance is calculated as the

difference between the net sale price and the carrying amount of the asset. Impairment Property, plant and equipment is reviewed for impairment whenever events or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying amount may not be recoverable. Any impairment loss is recognised for the amount by which the asset’s carrying value exceeds its recoverable amount. Depreciation Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost or revalued amounts of property, plant and equipment, to their estimated residual value, on a diminishing value or straight line basis over the expected useful economic lives of the assets concerned. Estimated useful lives are as follows: Bowling machine 20% p.a. on straight line Practice Nets 10% p.a. on diminishing value Clubrooms, extensions 2.5% p.a. on diminishing value Furniture, Fittings and Equipment 20% p.a. on diminishing value Payables Trade and other payables represent liabilities for goods and services provided to the club prior to the end of the financial year that are unpaid. The notional amount of creditors is deemed to reflect fair value.

Treasurers Report – Season 2017-18 by Gordon Dry --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Club recorded a surplus in the accounts for the financial year ended 30th April 2018 of $ 30,159. This is made up as follows: Senior Section + 9,348 (surplus) Junior Section +26,649 (surplus) Depreciation - 5,838 ----------- +30,159 (surplus) A hefty surplus for the Junior Club arose from increased levels for subscriptions and camp fees, plus a good return from the “Botham” fundraising evening. Also, curtailing the previously significant expenditure on playing uniforms, reduced outgoings markedly. The Junior Club committee may wish to review the annual subs for the new season ahead. Overall, the financial outcome for the Club is a strong result and adds to a sound financial base for the Club going forward. Grants from the gaming machine trusts were generally at an acceptable level, though the trust funding for the Hawkes Bay junior camps was sharply reduced. I propose to look at other avenues to try and pick up some of the shortfall in this area. Club funding from other sources was also very pleasing. We need to continue to nurture and develop all avenues of income where we can. We can look forward to 2018/19 with confidence. Our reserves are healthy, but we need to keep a firm hand on the situation, so that the Club can continue to prosper and benefit from our financial strength. All in all, the Club is in excellent heart and well placed to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Go the Mighty Easts!!
