AS WE GATHER: In the Nicene Creed we confess, “And I
believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life.” This
Third Person of the Trinity whom we celebrate today
“proceeds from the Father and the Son.” With the Father and
the Son He is both worshiped and glorified. This is God who
has spoken by His prophets as today through Ezekiel He
declares, “You shall know that I am the Lord, when I open
your graves, and raise you from your graves, O My people.
And I will put My Spirit within you, and you shall live”
(Ezekiel 37:13–14).
This He has done in the hearts of everyone who has heard His
saving Word, from Adam and Eve to you. To emphasize the
universality of God’s desire, today we recall that post-
resurrection Day of Pentecost, when no barriers of language
could hinder God’s work.
Jesus tells us that this Spirit He sends is from the Father. The
Spirit comes to witness about Jesus and His work of salvation
for all. That witness consists of both the truth about sin and
about the Savior, Law and Gospel, to bring us to repentance
and enliven our faith repeatedly, day by day as we live in His
presence and the grace of God.
PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: O God, in order that all
may obtain the saving faith, You send Your Holy Spirit who
works faith where and when it pleases You in those who hear
3
the Gospel. Shine in our hearts, O Spirit, precious light, teach
us Jesus Christ to know aright, that we may abide in the Lord
who bought us, till to our true home He has brought us. Lord,
have mercy.
PREPARATION
HYMN “Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord” LW 154
INVOCATION
Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 139:12–14
Pastor: O God, even the darkness is not dark to You;
People: the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with You.
Pastor: For You formed my inward parts;
People: You knitted me together in my mother’s
womb.
Pastor: I praise You,
People: for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION John 3:8
Pastor: Beloved in Christ, God sends His Holy Spirit as
He promised to work true contrition and sorrow
over our sins and the gift of the repentance of
faith in His forgiveness. In this truth we make
our confession together.
4
People: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the
faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your
love. By the power of Your Word, we confess
our sin and need of Your grace. We confess
that we have sinned against You in our
thoughts, in our words, and in our actions,
both in what we have done and in what we
have failed to do. For the sake of the mighty
work of our Lord Jesus, His death and
resurrection for us and the whole world,
grant to us Your forgiveness and new life.
Pastor: “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear
its sound, but you do not know where it comes
from or where it goes. So it is with everyone
who is born of the Spirit.” Receive the Holy
Spirit. Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of
my office, as a called and ordained servant of
the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of
you, and in the stead and by the command of
my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins
in the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.

5
These all look to You,
to give them their food in due season.
When You give it to them, they gather it up;
when You open Your hand, they are filled
with good things.
When You send forth Your Spirit, they are
created,
and You renew the face of the ground.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the
faithful,

People: have mercy on us.
Pastor: O Lord, who ascended to the Father’s right

HYMN OF THE DAY “Come Holy Ghost, Our Souls
Inspire” LW 157
SERMON (Rev. Dr. Allan Buckman)
CREED Nicene Creed
People: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth and of all things
visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-
begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father
before all worlds, God of God, Light of
Light, very God of very God, begotten, not
made, being of one substance with the
Father, by whom all things were made; who
for us men and for our salvation came down
from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy
Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius
Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the
third day He rose again according to the
Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits
at the right hand of the Father. And He will
come again with glory to judge both the
9
living and the dead, whose kingdom will have
no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord
and giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son, who with the Father and
the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in
one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I
acknowledge one Baptism for the remission
of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the
dead and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God in
Christ Jesus, and for all people according to
their needs.
Lord God, on this day we praise You for
sending the light of Your salvation to the whole
world by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit.
Cause the light of Your saving Word to shine in
our hearts and throughout the world that we
with many may be brought to true repentance
and strengthened in saving faith in Christ. Lord,
in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Pastor: Cause Your Spirit especially to lead, guide, and
enlighten all pastors and those whom You have
called to proclaim Your life-giving Word. By
the same Spirit, help them to point us and the
world to Jesus Christ and Him crucified and
10
risen again for the life of the world. Lord, in
Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Pastor: Even among the nations and those placed in the
authority of government, cause Your light and
Your truth to guide in the way of truth, both to
the punishing of the ugliness of evil and to the
praise of the beauty of all that is good. Give
them wisdom to lead all people in the way of
righteousness and peace. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Pastor: By Your Spirit, bring Your Word and assurance
of deliverance, health, and healing to all who
are in sorrow or need, sickness or adversity.
Deliver, O Lord, especially those who are most
helpless and those to whom death draws near.
Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Pastor: We give You thanks for all who have gone
before us with the sign of faith, for all the saints
through the ages, and especially our loved ones
who now dwell in Your nearer presence and rest
from their labors. [Silence for remembrance.]
Keep us in fellowship with all Your saints, and
bring us at last to the joys of Your heavenly
kingdom. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for
whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy;
through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
People: Amen.

From sin’s bondage set me free.

should at all times and in all places give thanks
to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and
everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
for Your sending of the Holy and life-giving

Spirit on Your people, enabling the saving
witness of Your grace to continue to all the
ages. Therefore with angels and archangels and
with all the company of heaven we laud and
magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising
You and saying:
SANCTUS “Holy, Holy, Holy” LW 168

Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy
sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee;
Which wert and art and evermore shalt be.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky
and sea.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

creation, for You have had mercy on us and
given Your only-begotten Son that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have
eternal life.
In these last days, You have poured out Your
Holy Spirit on Your Church that Your sons and
daughters might proclaim the wonders of Your
salvation in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

body and blood of Your Son, we may go forth
to proclaim His salvation to the ends of the

24; Luke 22:19–20; 1 Corinthians 11:23–25
Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He
was betrayed, took bread, and when He had
given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the
disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My
body, which is given for you. This do in
remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after
supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave
it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this
cup is the new testament in My blood, which
is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This
do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of
Me.”
PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST
Pastor: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup,
we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. 1

Your coming for the final judgment.

Stewardship Thoughts for May 20: Pentecost
Acts 2:1 – “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all
together in one place.” Pentecost was the Old Testament
harvest festival: a time of thanksgiving, bounty, and the
giving of gifts. How appropriate that in the New Testament it
takes on the meaning of a new harvest: the ripe fields of the
nations, bringing in the elect of every tribe and tongue to sing
the Lord’s praise. Every farmer knows that it is God who
gives the increase and that the harvest calls for thanksgiving.
Life Thoughts - May 20 “We celebrate when a mother has
second thoughts concerning abortion and keeps her baby. We
sing ‘Alleluia’ when an orphaned child once abandoned is
adopted and lives in a home filled with the presence of
Christ’s love reflected through a mother and
father.” Chaplain (Lt. Colonel) Steven Hokana, Assistant
Director of Ministry to the Armed Forces (MAF) (LCMS) – A
