Over 1,000 educators and bus iness par tners attended the 2011 National Career Pathways Network Conference, October 13-14, in Orlando. The conference theme, “Transforming Lives for a Strong America,” reflected the increasing emphasis on the need to create opportunities for student academic and career success that can lead to increased personal and corporate economic strides in the U.S.

The Association of Florida Colleges is the professional association for Florida's 28 public community colleges/colleges, their Boards, employees, retirees and associates.

LSCC’s Dean of General Education and Transfer Programs Gary Sligh will represent this significant state-wide organization as its 2012 president. Dr. Sligh was elected as the

group’s president-elect during last year’s annual convention. His term’s theme is “Many Dreams, One Future.”

Organized in 1949, AFC’s mission is to promote, represent, support, and serve the individual members and institutions in their endeavors to provide their students and citizens with the best possible comprehensive community college educational system. In addition to every Florida community college, AFC has 9,000 individual employee and retiree members.

LSCC takes great pride that one of its own will lead this prominent state organization throughout the coming year.

Christyne Hamilton was LSCC’s nominee for the LeRoy Collins Distinguished Alumni Award. She and the other nominees were honored during the Association of Florida Colleges Convention’s Presidential Gala Dinner on October 27, for their substantial contributions to their colleges and communities.

Chris is truly a community college success story, not only because she is an alumna of Johnson Junior College, but

also because she retired from a long and distinguished academic career, retiring as Seminole State College’s vice president of administrative and business services. She is as busy as ever, however, working tirelessly as LSCC’s equity consultant.

LSCC’s Lucy Torman and Dr. Gary Sligh are the proud parents of two National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. The two stellar dual-enrollment

students, Megan Torman and Graham Sligh, will find out this February if they advance to Finalist standing.
