Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus and

Mother Mary,

Last week we reflected on the words

of Jesus “I am the vine, you are the branches.

Whoever remains in me and I am in him will bear

great fruit.” This week Jesus takes us deeper into

that reality and beckons us to

“remain in his love.” God is love and Jesus came to manifest that

love through his life – through a life of obedience to the Father

unto death – “Thy will be done”.

Jesus came to manifest (to make clear in a palpable way)

that love through his life. Jesus lived at a !me of brutal Roman

occupa!on when oppression and injus!ce toward the poor and the

outsider were considered the norm. Throughout his life, Jesus

taught forgiveness, courage, hope, faithfulness to the Father and

above all love for God and for one another. Jesus had a public life

for less than three years, his followers barely understood him and

he was put to death as a criminal, hardly a success story. Yet the

frui+ulness of his life lives. It lives in the world today. It lives in us.

Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. As branches how

do we bear fruit? “You will know them by their fruits. Do men

gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? Even so,

every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear

good fruit.” (Ma".7 15:20) We a"ach to the vine through our faith,

through receiving the Eucharist and unite through prayer.

We can trust, we can truly trust that the vine is good.

Knowing that, knowing that we are connected to good means this;

· that from the start we have been loved “You formed my inmost

being; you knit me in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)

· that our sins are forgiven

· that eternal inheritance is ours

Today, Jesus asks us to remain in that love.

With a grateful heart we can go into our week to obey the

command to love one another in a small measure as we have

been loved. —God Bless, Fr. Bala
