Sustaining the Practice (Shitsuke)
To Train people to practice the system continuously so that it becomes habitual and ingrained in the culture of the organization.
Maintain and review standards. Maintain focus on this new way and do not allow a gradual decline
back to the old ways. Think for Better ways. When an issue arises, review the first 4 S's and make changes as
appropriate. This is the phase where the company tries to make the process part
of the culture of the company to ensure the implementation and improvement of the practice. By performing regular audits and Training and Discipline to employees the practices will be sustain
-It means that sustaining the practice make the work to be kept in order, through this method the rules are keep to be maintain every day. It is also sometimes associated with to do without being told
Ways on Sustaining Practice
Guidelines in order to sustain the practice
Build awareness of the importance of 5s through retraining reward and recognize efforts of staff
use techniques/approaches/strategies to sustain the established activities.
Reviewing the 5s methodology
5s slogans and posters 5s newsletters to share the progress of 5s methodology 5s achievements that provides the standards and performance
indicators.
“Sustaining the practice requires self-discipline without which it is impossible to maintain consistent standards of quality safety and cleanliness.”
Additional S's
These additional S’ do not form the traditional set of “phase”, it is simply to clarify the benefits of 5S and not different or more comprehensive methodology.
Safety
A sixth phase, "Safety", is sometimes added.
There is debate over whether including this sixth "S" promotes safety by stating this value explicitly, or if a comprehensive safety program is undermined when it is relegated to a single item in an efficiency-focused business methodology.
It is the phase wherein the company ensures the safety aspects of the practice through reviewing every action and each area to assure that they do not overlooked any potential hazards.
Security
A seventh phase, "Security", can also be added.
To leverage security as an investment rather than an expense, the seventh "S" identifies and addresses risks to key business categories including fixed assets (PP&E), material, human capital, brand equity, intellectual property, information technology, assets-in-transit and the extended supply chain.
In this phase the company assures a security to their different investment either to people or any type of assets.
Total security management (TSM) or the business practice of developing and implementing comprehensive risk management and security practices for a firm’s entire value chain.
Satisfaction
An eighth phase, “Satisfaction”, can be included.
Employee Satisfaction and engagement in continuous improvement activities ensures the improvements will be sustained and improved upon.
It is important to have continuous education about maintaining standards to know if the employees are satisfied to the ongoing practice.

This is JAPAN today.Notice how Japan recovered from past disasters that struck the country in just a short period of time?
According to studies, the 5S played a fundamental role in shaping the Japan we know today.
So, what does 5S do exactly? Why is it important?
5S Objective - to create a quality working environment in a systematic and practical way. Next, to create a workplace that is more efficient and productive to contribute towards organizational excellence.
Let us take a look back on the 5S Methodology – Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke and find out the purpose of each.
Seiri:ELIMINATION
1. Separating the useful from the useless: ELIMINATION
2. Sorting out and keeping only what is necessary for the environment through: The elimination of the
useless items The selection of the items
required for efficiency in the workplace
Objective: the implementation of useful tools for creating an
effective work environment without bothersome and useless influences
Seiton:ORGANIZATION
1. Organizing items based on their use: Organization

2. Putting things in their proper place by: Selecting the best place for
each object Selecting a method for the
organization and identification of each object
Objective: Eliminating the need to look for objects
Seiso:CLEANING
1. Eliminating the sources of dirt and smudges: CLEANING
2. Efficient elimination of dirt by: Identifying the sources of dirt
and smudges at the time of each cleaning procedure
Implementing measures to eliminate the sources of dirt and smudges and ensure cleanliness with minimal effort
Objective: To keep things clean.
Seiketsu: ORDER
1. Visually standardize better practices: STANDARDIZE

Now that we know the purpose of every methods of 5S, we will now go to the overall purpose of the 5S Methodology:

IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY
Production workers do not have to look for tools thus making them work with ease and the production, faster.
ACCESS AND RETURN AT THE SAME LOCATION
If items are accessed at an accessible location possible – with the adoption of standardization – they are most likely to be returned at the same correct location.
PLANT MAINTENANCE IMPROVEMENT
Sense of OWNERSHIP brings Sense of RESPONSIBILITY
Preventive Maintenance is built-up – highlighting potential problems before it impacts the performance.
TASK DIVISION
Nature of Business is the variation for dividing tasks among workers (e.g. Production Workers, Specialist Maintenance Engineers etc.)
Q FOR QUALITY
Dirt Management – its impact in a Manufacturing Environment; but in some, they welcome dirt in their production.
Dirt impacts product performance – directly/indirectly through compromising the integrity of the test process.
5S: GOING DEEPER
Inappropriate Layout = Damaged Product
If you have an inappropriate layout for making your product, it has a tendency to become damaged. Why? Because, there is no proper method to be followed. The outline for making the product is either unfitting or improper. That’s why, with 5S, there is a structured method to be followed in order to avoid product damages.
STANDARDIZATION

A Standard Operating Procedure is MUCH easier to achieve if the tool to be certified is always in a clear-marked location.
Other Objectives of 5’s
To improve Health & Safety: Clear pathways between workbenches and storage racks can minimize
accidents.
