systems arepractical, cost-effective andenergy efficientsolutions forpollutionabatement, re-entrainment andodor controlproblems. Tri-Stack fans andsystems are usedat hundreds offacilities, serving

as direct replacements forconventional centrifugalexhaust fans which are usuallyassociated with tall, unsightlystacks. Lightweight, modularconstruction with lower systempressures (typically 2” w.g.)than conventional exhaust

stack designs help provide atwo year payback when usedfor centrifugal fanreplacement. Otheradvantages of Tri-Stacksystems include low profiledesign, low noise levels, variable air volume controland vibration free operation atlower operating costs. Tri-Stacks are also virtuallymaintenance-free, offeringsignificant cost savings withregard to maintenance labor, while eliminating the need forrooftop penthouses andexpensive vibration preventionhardware. Direct drive motorsexhibit up to 200,000 hourlifetimes, eliminating the needto replace belts, pulleys, orother limited life components. Tri-Stack systems are designedfor use at hospitals, biomedical facilities and

research laboratories atuniversities, pharmaceutical, chemical and petrochemicalorganizations. They’re alsoideal for exhaustinghospital/infirmary isolationrooms (or researchlaboratories andpharmaceutical productionfacilities) where 100%conditioned makeup air isusually required, and foremergency diesel generatorexhaust to prevent re-entrainment and eliminateodor in the neighborhood. Infact, Tri-Stack systems shouldbe considered wherever issuesof exhaust pollution, odorcontrol, re-entrainment,aesthetics and energy savings are important.

Sizes, capacities and configurations for virtually any pollution abatement and odor control application

Tri-Stack systems are designed for retrofit andnew construction. They are available withmany different motor sizes to meet preciseairflow and pressure requirements. Strobic’stechnical/engineering staff will be pleased towork with you to determine the best possibleTri-Stack configuration for your application.

The Tri-Stack TS-2 roofexhaust fan providesup to 18,500 CFM withstatic pressures of 5.25"w.g. maximum andmotor horsepowersranging from 5 to 15.

Tri-Stack TS Series roof exhaust fans

HEPA filtration systemFor special medical/pharmaceutical applications such as isolation room andquarantine room exhaust, Level 4 safety laboratories, or similar applications, bagin/bag out HEPA filtration systems are available for Tri-Stack systems.

Fans for high temperatureenvironmentsTri-Stack fans are also available in rigid steel construction for many hightemperature applications such as emergency diesel generator, furnace or boilerroom exhaust. Fans can withstand up to 750° F temperatures without the needfor outside air dilution, and incorporate chemical resistant high temperaturecoatings. A brass rub ring on the inlet bell conforms to AMCA "C" spark resistancespecifications.

Retrofit applicationsReplacing outmoded centrifugal fans with Tri-Stack fans is practical, convenient, and cost-effective. One manifolded Tri-Stack fan can typically replace up to 20individually dedicated stacks enhancing building aesthetics and eliminatingnegative implications associated with roof stacks. In addition to performance andoperating cost advantages, retrofitting Tri-Stack systems reduces engineering costsand eliminates extensive coordination of production/processing schedules toprevent unnecessary and expensive downtime.

• Prevent re-entrainment–Tri-Stack systems send avertical “jet plume” ofdiluted exhaust gas up to350’ high, providingatmospheric disbursementand preventing exhaustfrom re-entering the facilitythrough fresh air supplyventilation systems, doors, and windows.

• Eliminate odor– The dilutioncapabilities of Tri-Stack fans(up to 170% of free outsideair is introduced into theairstream above the roof),effectively eliminate odors, preventing them fromentering the facility andneighboring buildings.

• Reduce noise at the property line– Tri-Stack systems areinherently quiet. Directdrive motors are quieterthan centrifugal fans with

belts and pulleys; highefficiency operation permitsuse of smaller horsepowermotors; more efficient bladedesign contributes toquieter operation. In theevent that noise is aproblem, Strobic Air offersa number of noiseattenuation accessoriesdescribed elsewhere in thisbrochure.

• Comply with architectural/aesthetic ordinances– Lowprofile Tri-Stack systems areoften not even visible fromthe property line. As aresult, problems associatedwith tall, unsightly stacks –including the perception ofexhausting polluted air inthe neighborhood – areeliminated with Tri-Stacksystems. Since manycommunities have strict

ordinances governingheight of building exhauststacks, Tri-Stack systems areideal for code compliancein virtually all cases.

• Lower energy costs– Directdrive motors in Tri-Stacksystems use substantiallyless energy per horsepowerthan comparable beltdriven motors. Combinedwith mixed flow impellerdesign energy consumptionis minimized. Based oncurrent energy costs, atypical Tri-Stack system canprovide a return oninvestment (ROI) in less thantwo years. In addition, forapplications that requireconditioned makeup air,Strobic offers accessoryheat exchanger systems thatcan significantly reduceenergy costs.

Value added accessories for enhancedsystem performanceMaximize HVAC system performance, minimize noise at the property lineStrobic Air offers a number of useful accessories for Tri-Stack fans including systems to reduceenergy consumption, provide even quieter operation through higher sound attenuation, and manyspecial construction materials and/or coatings to accommodate unusual applications such asoperation in acidic, caustic and high temperature environments. Many of these accessories aredescribed here.

Heat recovery systemsUnique glycol/water heat exchanger coil modules for Tri-Stack systems extractexhaust heat for heating or cooling conditioned makeup air. (A 1° F rise inmakeup air temperature permits a corresponding 3% reduction in heating costs, drastically lowering energy costs for savings of thousands – or hundreds ofthousands – of dollars per year.)

Acoustical silencer nozzles™ Acoustical silencer nozzles for Tri-Stack systems attenuate up to 12 dBa forquieter operation in particularly noise sensitive areas. Low profile design isunobtrusive, enhancing roofline aesthetics without affecting fan performance.Acoustical silencer nozzles may be retrofitted onto existing Tri-Stack fans quicklyand conveniently.

Fans for harsh environmentsTri-Stack fans are also available with special materials of construction and/orcoatings for use in caustic, corrosive and other severe environments (such aschemical processing, plating and wastewater treatment facilities) where they maybe exposed to nitric acid, fluorides, sulfuric acids and other high concentrations ofcaustic exhaust components.

Mixed flow impeller technology–the key to superior performanceTri-Stack systems provide significant performance, reliability, and costadvantages over conventional centrifugal exhaust fans

Strobic Air has been refiningmixed flow technology fans formore than two decades, and

has pioneered many aerodynamicconcepts associated with thistechnology. Mixed flow fans–originally developed for lowpressure, high flow applications–provide optimum performance invirtually all configurations of lowpressure and high flow, and highpressure and low flow. They offersubstantial advantages overcentrifugal-type fans such as higherefficiency performance for lowerhorsepower requirements forcomparable pressures and flows,as well as energy efficientoperation. The constantacceleration ratio of mixed flowfan blades permits both theleading and trailing edges toperform equal work, maximizingefficiency and providing a stableperfor mance curve without stall or unstall sections.

Because Tri-Stack systems requirelittle or no maintenance, health and safety considerations ofmaintenance people (on the roof)are eliminated, while freeing themfor more productive work. Inaddition, the need for rooftoppenthouses to protect maintenanceworkers is also eliminated, reducing costs and weight on the roof structure.

On a direct operating cost basis, use of Tri-Stack mixed flow fantechnology reduces energyconsumption as indicated in thechart opposite. When combinedwith accessory heat recoverysystems, Tri-Stack systemsdramatically lower overall energycosts for building climate control.

Tri-Stack systems meet ANSI Z9.5, ASHRAE 110, NAPA 45 and all applicable ventilation standards

Tri-Stack systems conform to all applicable ventilationstandards – without exception – such as ANSI/AIHAZ9.5 (American National Standards Institutes/AmericanInstitute of Hygienic Association) for laboratoryworkstations and their exhaust systems), ASHRAE(American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers, Inc.) 110, and NFPA (NationalFire Prevention Association) 45. These organizationsprovide guidelines with regard to building air intakeand exhaust design, indoor air quality and re-entrainment issues of contaminated exhaust enteringdoors, windows and outside air intakes.

Cost is obviously a key consideration whenevaluating capital equipment for complexHVAC systems. To that end, consider

these 10 reasons why Tri-Stack systems helpreduce costs for pollution abatement, odorcontrol, and re-entrainment.

Modular construction— Tri-Stack systems arecomposed of three individual modules, speciallydesigned to speed and simplify installation whilelowering installation cost. Modular designpermits quick installation directly on the roof, eliminating the need for expensive constructionequipment and helicopters that require buildingevacuation. Tri-Stack systems (with self-containedmixing boxes or plenums) may be easilyretrofitted onto existing roofs with minimal effort.

No protective penthouses— Without maintenanceproblems, there’s no need for expensivepenthouses to protect maintenance personnel on the roof under adverse conditions. Instead, you can expect savings of several hundreds ofthousands of dollars in a typical installation.Maintenance-free operation— Tri-Stack’s direct drivemotors are virtually maintenance-free withtypical lifetimes of 200,000 hours. There areno belts, pulleys, flex connectors, or springvibration isolators to maintain, and the motorsare designed to operate continuously–without periodic maintenance– for years under normal conditions.Unique exhaust nozzle design— Tri-Stack systemsincorporate computer designed, state-of-the-artexhaust nozzle designs that help lowerresistance, increase flow and pressure, andincrease stack outlet velocities to minimize by-pass requirements. These characteristics worktogether to further reduce operating costs.Special fan wheel design— Tri-Stack’s unique fanwheels are developed with Computer AidedDesign (CAD) techniques. Efficient fan bladedesign helps lower horsepower requirementswith subsequent energy reduction. In addition,non-stall characteristics permit use of variablefrequency drives, further enhancing efficiencyand reducing energy consumption. No expensive silencers needed— Increased air flowvs. resistance efficiencies enable Tri-Stacksystems to provide high performance atsubstantially lower noise levels–particularly inthe lower octave bands–often eliminating theneed for expensive inlet and/or outletsilencers.Simple installation without roof curbs— Stack height of Tri-Stack systems is only about 60% ofconventional stacks. Fast installation—A typical Tri-Stack four fan systemcan be mounted on the roof – in less than twohours – with minimal rigging equipment. Andwhen retrofitting existing systems (typicallyinstalled while penthouses are beingconstructed), Tri-Stack eliminates the need for“temporary” exhaust systems. In addition tosubstantially lower installation costs, engineering costs are also reduced, as well asdisruption of work schedules which can causewasteful and expensive downtime.

Reduced horsepower motors— A new exhaust nozzledesign maximizes system performance toprovide increased airflow and efficiency whilelowering horsepower requirements, thus furtherreducing energy consumption.

Retrofit applicationsReplacing outmoded centrifugal fans with Tri-Stack fans is practical, convenient, and cost-effective. One manifolded Tri-Stack fan can typically replace up to 20individually dedicated stacks enhancing building aesthetics and eliminatingnegative implications associated with roof stacks. In addition to performance andoperating cost advantages, retrofitting Tri-Stack systems reduces engineering costsand eliminates extensive coordination of production/processing schedules toprevent unnecessary and expensive downtime.
