Who’s the training for?In short....everyone

To put it simply, everybody in your organisation will need H&S training at some level. The trick comes with finding that level and making sure that your people are properly trained.

Why train?There is a difference between Training and Learning. Training helps people to learn through dynamic interaction with them either in classrooms, workshops or online. But learning is the key to competence and only the individual can acheive this. Anderco delivers the optimum blend of training to best enable the individual to learn and thereby take responsibility for their own Health & Safety.

The Positive reason The provision of a positively safe working environment is a moral, environmental and social responsibility of all management whether in the public or private sector. Keeping people safe and healthy at work improves their effectiveness through increased productivity with improved outputs and increases their efficiency because they take less time off due to accidents and illness.

Importantly training reduces fatalities and injuries which have such a negative impact on employee morale and a devastating impact on the families of the victims.

The Legal reasonWe live in a litigious society with a lively claims culture. Health & Safety claims are expensive, corrosive to workplace positivity and very time consuming for management. Having claims awarded against you can

seriously impact your bottom line and increase your insurance costs. One of the best defence against claims is to prove that the litigant received appropriate training. Overall a positive Health & Safety culture within any organisation that ensures compliance can reduce insurance costs and maintain effectiveness and efficiency.


Despite increasingly effective

training regimes, Ireland still had an average of 50 workplace fatalities

per year in the last 5 years. And over 500,000 days were lost to accidents in the workplace. A similar number

of days are lost to illness. These costs are substantial and will

directly affect your bottom line - unless you take preventative action.

The Injuries Board awarded an average of 9,200 claims a year for the last 5 years totalling €1,032

million.

Who should have Health & Safety Training?

Simply stated all Managers, Supervisors and Staff require some level of Health & Safety training to ensure they are safe at work and won’t endanger others with whom they have to interact. This applies to all sizes of organisation from the sole trader to the large corporate organisations in the public and private sectors. • Managers – Need to understand

the legal requirements of Health & Safety regulations from EU Directives to national policies. They must also create and invoke the organisation’s Health & Safety policy and ensure it is applied. In addition they must undergo any organisation-specific training appropriate to their duties i.e. if they have to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to inspect work outputs they must be trained in its use.

• Supervisors – Need to invoke and manage the Health & Safety policy thereby ensuring ongoing compliance. And they also must undergo training appropriate to their duties.

• Staff– Need to know the Health & Safety policy and how to apply it. They must ensure they are provided with the required processes, procedures and PPE to ensure they can safely do their job and can comply with the policy. And they must know how to use any equipment or PPE provided for their protection. It is important to ensure they understand that they have a responsibility to protect themselves.

All organisations are different and have differing Health & Safety requirements. A generic induction programme may suit initially but thereafter requirements diverge according to the employment sector. Providing a customised Safety Passport system has proven very effective for many organisations to date and is a good way of ensuring compliance with sector specific requirements.

The options typically include:

Classroom training

Instructor led

Historically called chalk and talk. A good option if peer interaction between students and personal interaction between the instructor and students are the main drivers. Set up costs for this option are relatively low, initial development costs are typically a sixth that of median level e-learning where maintenance and delivery costs are low.

Instructor led and Computer Aided Instruction

Classroom based, Instructor led. This uses digital networks to deliver training courseware to the instructor in a classroom typically delivered from a training portal within a Virtual Learning Environment and either delivered via an Intranet or though the Internet. You can get very powerful results from this combination of instructor and computer aided training.

Computer Based Training A term covering many options.

• ComputerAidedInstruction which can include a wide variety of media from e-learning to PDFs to online manuals to standard Microsoft Office tools e.g. PowerPoint presentations. Typically provided through a Virtual Learning Environment and designed to support learners through life.

• E-Learning. Digital content delivered as courseware. If SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) compliant, it allows for bookmarking to enable students to pick up from where they left off and can, with a suitable Learning Management System, record progress, results and accreditations. The case for e-learning will ordinarily be triggered by the Training Needs analysis recommending that e-learning could be an option.

• WorkBasedTraining. Typically this is where digital training assets in an organisation’s Virtual Learning Environment are linked to work tasks and can be studied whilst working over a prolonged period to build up competence based on work experience.

• ExperientialTraining/Gamification. This is where training is created using simulation tools, emulation or games technology to deliver heavily customised training scenarios with underpinning scoring or feedback. Excellent for task specific training requirements e.g. training bank teller staff how to deal with a wide range of customers using the full range of the bank’s products.

Blended Learning

The training solutions of the moment, the Training Zeitgeist, are for blended learning solutions. Typically large organisations will provide pre-learning online and then have a dynamic and busy day workshop to consolidate knowledge and effect peer to peer learning.

Informal Learning

Up to 70% of learning is informal due to the power of the Internet and organisational Intranets.
