OUR MISSION
The mission of ACSC is to inspire, encourage, and support every student to achieve at
high levels academically and socially as responsible citizens by doing whatever it takes.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Anderson Community School Corporation (ACSC) has become fully engaged in the Eight Step Process as a consistent, sustainable school improvement structure. After launching the Eight Step Process in partnership with the Anderson Federation of Teachers (AFT), staff have aligned themselves in collaborative relationships around the goal of improving instruction for all students in ACSC. Through this process, students are provided consistent core instruction from teachers who have collaboratively planned with grade level or content area colleagues. At the end of a three-week instructional cycle, students engage in formative mini-assessments. Based on the assessment data, students are afforded an opportunity for immediate, second chance learning when needed. The Eight Step Process provides a systematic structure for continuous school improvement. The 2013-14 school year brought the opening of Southview Preschool Center, open to any four-year-old in the Corporation as well as eligible 3- and 4-year old’s with disabilities. Its mission is to provide preschool students and their families with authentic enriching experiences preparing them for success in kindergarten and in their journeys as life-long learners. Elementary instructional programs are anchored in balanced literacy and early foundations in numeracy and thinking mathematics. Whole group, small group and individualized instruction provides a sequence of gradual release of responsibility in supporting all students to become efficient readers. Reading Specialists supplement literacy instruction for the most struggling readers. Elementary students also benefit from a full range of special classes, including art, music, library, and physical education. Self-contained, high-ability classrooms are an option for elementary students, beginning in grade three. Students with mild disabilities are included in grade level classrooms from kindergarten through grade three. Anderson Intermediate School provides transitional fifth and sixth grades with partner teachers working in small learning communities. Highland Middle School students in grades seven and eight benefit from a teacher team approach for increased integration in the core subjects. Middle school students are invited to a wide array of fine and performing arts, technology, and related arts opportunities to complement the core instruction. Anderson High School provides a full complement of courses and career pathways to prepare students for college and careers. Many options are available for Advanced Placement, Advanced College Placement, Dual Credit, Career and Technical Education, Fine and Performing Arts, National Junior Navy ROTC, etc. At the secondary buildings, a wide variety of extracurricular and alternative learning opportunities awaits every student. ACSC is in its fifteenth year using Peer Assistance and Review (PAR) as a teacher evaluation system. Through the deployment of Consulting Teachers, first year (Intern) teachers are provided ongoing support over two semesters in the areas of instruction and classroom management. Additionally, veteran teachers determined to be in need of assistance are provided at least eight weeks of Consulting Teacher support to raise their instructional effectiveness. The program shares governance and operational procedures in partnership with the AFT.
