City Sponsors Annual MLK, Jr. Community Celebration

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Wide Celebration was held at the Paramount Theater on Monday, January 20. Once again, the City of An-derson served as the primary financial sponsor of the event which featured Derick Grant as the keynote speaker. Grant played basketball professionally for nine years, eight of them for the World Famous Har-lem Globetrotters. Grant played college basketball at the College of New Jersey where he finished with 1,542 career points and was an NABC All-American. Derick received his Bachelors Degree in

Business Leadership, graduating with a Magna cum Laude honors, and completed his Masters degree in Organizational Management. He is married to Ander-son native Carly Clendenen. Mayor Thomas Broderick Jr. said the annual event helps to bring people together from across our com-munity. “The civil rights movement put us on the path of equality for all,” he said. “As Dr. King dreamed we are now judged by the content of our character and not the color of our skin.” The celebration began in Anderson in 1980. A re-ception was held after the event in the Paramount Ballroom.

Downtown Skating Rink Winds Up

Second Successful Season

More than 13,000 people have taken advantage of

the downtown skating rink in Dickmann Town Center

in just two short seasons. “We are thrilled with the

popularity of our downtown skating rink,” said Mayor

Thomas Broderick. “We are already looking forward

to next season and the Parks Department is hard at

work making plans to make it even more popular!”

The rink, along with the Santa House and the down-

town Christmas Festival are part of the city’s quality of

life initiative.
