Thomas•Roskilly•Body

Following their adverts in January and February’s editions of the Andover Gazette, Thomas Roskilly Body invited me to try their body contouring and breast enhancement treatments.

MELT, which is body contouring, and Qilinn, which is breast enhancement, are not only new to Andover but to the UK. Innovator Dr Sister will launch these amazing machines at Professional Beauty, Excel in London this month. (They are already widely used in Scandinavia.)

To be honest I was a bit nervous and skeptical – how can this work? But believe me it did!! My first experience was MELT on my tummy. Wow! It was so relaxing, soothing and such a lovely warm feeling. I was impressed with the professional manner in which the treatment was given. Paula gave me all the information I needed as well as the opportunity to ask questions. There was no pain or soreness just relaxation. The machine has different ‘heads’ which are smoothed over your body while you lay back on the bed. Since

the treatment I have lost 4lbs and my tummy is more toned, so I am very happy.

The following week I tried Qilinn (breast enhancement) and, to be honest, I was more nervous with this one. I shouldn’t have been because everything is calm and Paula and Dorthe are such friendly people. Again Paula gave me all the information I needed and made me feel so comfortable. I laid on the bed wearing goggles (just like sunbed goggles) to protect my eyes from the light flashes while the treatment was given. It was relaxing and I could feel myself going to sleep. Since the treatment I can see a difference – I have more ‘fullness’; it’s brilliant!

I would never consider surgery but I would consider these treatments! They are safe and, in comparison to surgery, they are inexpensive. I must admit it took me to try it first but now I think I maybe hooked!

Thank you Thomas Roskilly Body.

Give a Little, Save a Lot.

Andover has seen much change over the years, royalty, new business and worldwide inventions.

• Andover was a significant area in prehistoric times, as portrayed by many findings in the Iron Age Museum.

• In 994 AD, Vikings were confirmed in Andover by Bishop Alphece at the present site of St Mary’s Church.

• When Andover was registered in the Domesday book, Andover had 107 males inhabitants and a total population 500.

• During the great plague, Andover suffered extremely from these outbreaks, from 1603-1636, a plague lasting 13 years.

• In 1706, Twining’s began selling fine teas in England, and as many of you know, one of the many factories was based in Andover until 2010.

Fast forward to more recent times we have seen a new theatre, mutli screen cinema, redevelopment of the existing college and new supermarkets.

Andover keeps growing, has an amazing history and has the potential to become well known far and wide, so why isn’t it? And why is it that so many people appear have a low opinion of the town. I don’t know, but maybe if we all adopt a positive attitude, we can make this town amazing. If the history of this town has taught us anything, it’s that we have been through some rough times, but with vision it can great again.

We like to hear from you. What should we do to get empty retail premises full again, to get more businesses into the many vacant units on our trading estates. Come on Andover what do you think?

When it comes to maximising your revenue and profits, it’s all about executing the right strategies in a timely manner with the right people. In these times of gloomy forecasts for Europe this is just the time to UP your game and ensure that you are pressing all of the right buttons.

It is not necessarily about doing more, but doing the right thing. As the saying goes, ‘sometimes more means less’ or rather spend your energies on doing the right things and not just the ones you are used to doing.

Here are my top 10 tips for every business owner:

1. Concentrate on your Customer base:

Understand your customer demographics and why they buy your products and services. ASK them the question. Also ask them if they can recommend others to you. Maybe set up a new pricing structure offering new price breaks giving your customers more flexibility to buy!

2. Increase LOW cost marketing:

Set up a business Twitter and Facebook page. Start a blog or comment on other blogs.

3. Ask for opinions:

Bounce ideas off of people you trust. Ask your team for input to new ideas. Ask your customers how you might change your product or service.

4. Keep your Web Site fresh:

Make sure if you have a Web site that it is up to date and reflects your current strategies. Add an e-commerce section. If you haven’t got a Web site, invest in one. You can get started for very little outlay now.

5. Free up time to sharpen up what really makes a difference:

This one always seems impossible, but look at your ‘to do’ list. How many things do you do that you could STOP doing?

Are you properly organised. Are you using technology or is it using you?

6. Offer special events to draw in customers:

Run demonstrations or education classes. Re-look at your pricing policy and maybe re-launch products or services. Re-arrange merchandise to make it appear fresher to give a new customer experience.

7. Network to increase referrals:

There are both free and fee groups that you can join and don’t ignore the ‘virtual’ groups on the Net. Do not miss out on social event networking.

8. Keep a watchful eye on your cash flow:

All businesses need cash. Make sure that your invoices are being paid promptly. Pay early if offered a discount. Monitor your cash flow regularly, daily if needs be.

9. Update your business plan:

You should be planning for success, but you cannot monitor your achievements if you do not have a plan and do not have a way of measuring what you have done.

10. Prepare for a step change:

You might need additional funding to make that next big step. How will you convince friends, family or banks (or other financial institutions) to put in money if you are not clear on where you want to go and where you have come from? You must be able to show the ability to repay any loans.

So, go forward from here with the confidence if you do all or even some of these the chances are your competitors will not. You will have a terrific advantage to succeed.

Good luck and see you next month.

Headlines such as, “Obese teens face a health time bomb” have graced the pages of UK newspapers over the last few years. According to statistics, nearly one in five 15 year olds is obese and one in five 13 to 16 year olds are overweight. Obesity seems to be a growing problem in today’s society.

What’s more, it can affect teens psychologically too and may bring with it a range of problems, such as low self-esteem, bullying, negative self-image, loneliness, a lack of self-confidence and depression.

Even something as seemingly simple as drinking one can of sugary drink each day can have a profound effect on a teens weight. A study which looked at the weight of 103 teens, found that drinking a single 330ml can of sugary drink could lead teens to put on 1lb in weight every three to four weeks. This equates to up to a stone in extra weight over a whole year.

The last thing teens want to feel is different or isolated because of their weight. Whilst some may be happy to talk openly about their weight issues, others might not, so tread carefully and don’t push your teen to talk to you. As a family, you can help most by supporting them and showing willing to do something positive yourself too. That means all taking up healthier eating and all getting involved in additional exercise and activity. If they have your support and encouragement and know that they’re not alone in trying to make changes, it can be very motivating.

Tommy Gentleman founder of Reasons Fitness, Andover’s premier new gym told YSB, “Through my job as a Personal

Trainer and Coach, I have been privileged to work with many teenagers of all body and personality types. Some are already into fitness, some get their exercise through their competitive sports such as football or netball, and some prefer a more “virtual” approach!

Inactivity and bad eating habits are an issue with teens these days, however, I believe that it IS possible to transform a teenager with low motivation towards exercise, into a healthy young adult.

One of the main key factors towards transforming a lazy teen, is having a positive role model. This could be in the form of a professional athlete or actor/actress, or perhaps in the form of their family members!

If you are a parent or a sibling or perhaps even a friend of a teen with potential obesity troubles then set an example in your own health and fitness. Be an inspiration to them, help them find what they need to make the necessary changes in their lives.”

Are you concerned about the inactivity of teenagers? Is too much time spend in front of that TV or games console? Let us know your views at www.yoursoapbox.com

On a fairly grey day, we took an energetic walk along part of the Test Way between Mottisfont and Stockbridge. The five-mile walk took us along what used to be part of the Sprat and Winkle railway line, and across some beautiful green fields, through marshland, and alongside the River Test.

The first half of our walk wasn’t quite what I’d imagined, as the footpath took us alongside the somewhat noisy A3058 road and the river was seldom visible from the footpath. But the second half of the walk, from the area near Kings Somborne all the way to Stockbridge, was much closer to the image I’d had in my mind of the beautiful landscape with rolling hills, peaceful wooded tracks, and the calm and crystal clear chalk stream river with swans and coots swimming amongst the reeds.

This section of the 44-mile Test Way follows what was originally a canal between Andover and Redbridge near Southampton and was then converted into a railway line. The Sprat and Winkle line, which opened in 1865, got a lot of passenger traffic from fishermen heading to the famous trout fishing spots along the River Test, as well as race-goers (and race horses) travelling to Stockbridge. It was also used to carry troops from Salisbury Plain to Southampton as they headed to France in the First and Second World Wars.

Showing signs of its history, there are abandoned railway sleepers and old railway bridges along the footpath, but the most interesting find was Horsebridge Station, which was closed in 1965 as part of Dr. Beeching’s Axe, the mass closure of 50% of stations to save money. The station was bought in 1985 by Val and Tony Charrington, who have since restored it to its Victorian glory and now open the station for afternoon teas and weddings.

Further along you come to the Marsh Court Estate, featuring a grand Tudor-style house designed by Edwin Lutyens in 47 acres of land. You can see the house when you reach theStockbridge Common Marsh. We ventured

off the Test Way onto the Common, which was my favourite part, with access to the river’s edge and wide open marshland. You come out along the footpath besides the Lillies of Stockbridge tearoom on the high street.

The full Test Way route takes you from the chalk downs at Inkpen to Eling on Southampton Water. We’ll be venturing out to other sections of the walk way soon.

Helicopters and aeroplanes depicting the history of army flying were the inspiration behind Harrow Way Community School’s latest art project, ‘Made Form.’ 42 Year 10 GCSE students visited the museum in

Middle Wallop to draw visual, informative studies of selected objects linked to aircraft engines, clothing, maps and many other historical aviation artefacts.

One of the following headings – Broken or Damaged, Spheres and Cylinders, Fastenings, Locomotion and Interlocking Forms, provided the starting point for each student. They sketched historical items which best illustrated their chosen topic be it buttons on a 1940’s army tunic, the complex workings of a helicopter engine or a water damaged map.

Sylvia Harvey, Head of Art at Harrow Way said: “There are so many incredible objects in the museum that are fascinating as historical items whilst providing the ideal inspiration for these students. Given the nature of this project, we really could not have chosen a better location.”

The Harrow Way artists had a busy creative day - in the afternoon they attended Roche Court Sculpture Park to draw, photograph and investigate the contemporary sculptures exhibited there.

The drawings, photographs and research from both sessions will be used in subsequent weeks to inspire and extend the student’s personal creative journey. The aim is for each student to select from a variety of media – clay, plaster, wire and textile to complete a 3D outcome.

Needless to say, Harrow Way has been recognised for its commitment to and excellence in arts education. The Arts Council England awarded its prestigious Artsmark Gold to Harrow Way Community School in June 2010.

For more information on Harrow Way Community School, please call 01264 364533 or visit www.harrowway.hants.sch.uk. Visits to the school by appointment are always welcome.

One thing was really new to us. Royal Caribbean International have introduced a Wow! Recognition card. This is a card, one per passenger, which can be given to any member of staff who has given exceptional service – delivered the Wow! factor in other words. The Wow! Recognition card overcomes doubts some people may have about pre-paying tips. Knowing you have a card to award, keeps all the staff keen and on their toes! Just like us! All of the staff here at Cruise In regularly cruise and we regularly publish their reports in our Newsletters. For the moment all we can tell you is we’re still in the middle of

First we were on on Royal Caribbean International’s Navigator of the Seas, a Voyager class ship, for six nights from Fort Lauderdale, calling at Grand Cayman, Falmouth (Jamaica) and Labadee, Haiti. We followed this with 5 nights on Royal Caribbean International’s Liberty of the Seas, a Freedom class ship from Fort Lauderdale calling at Belize and Cozumel, Mexico. The ships are brilliant. The itineraries were brilliant. Some of the ports of call were really eye-opening. Belize was just great. Neither of us had been there on previous cruises. You had to be on it to know it. Three days before sailing, the Rhine authorities threw all river traffic into chaos. This came as no surprise to them. Vessels over a certain size were banned from sailing upstream from Duisburg. Any other vessels could only manoeuvre in certain areas with many docking points unreachable. Unheard of. No water. No rain forecast for 10 days. The lowest water levels at Christmas time since records began. We were one of the only vessels to sail somewhere! Well, take a look at the photos. Happy people. New Christmas Markets. A cruise to remember for more reasons than one. But we made it. Duisburg. Krefeld. Dusseldorf. Cologne for 2 days. Coaches to Koblenz, Bonn and the Grandhotel Petersberg, Konigswinter. And the best bit of news that nobody onboard knew.....had we gone upstream to Wiesbaden and Rudesheim we wouldn’t have got back...river closed for bomb disposal! We all had a brilliant time under the circumstances with a great Cruise In Party, lots of splendid food but above all....the good old British family spirit that wins through every time! Thanks to all of you for coming and your lovely company. This year, fingers crossed that it can’t happen twice in 100 years, we’ll all be up river where we should have been!

THE EVEN MORE SPLENDID SPLENDOUR OF THE SEAS

Royal Caribbean International's Splendour of the Seas had a complete refurbishment, a 'five-week revitalization', as it was called, in October 2011. The ship was upgraded inside and out at a cost of $50 million. 124 balcony cabins were added and all existing cabins were upgraded and their technology enhanced. There are new stateroom amenities including flat-screen TVs and remodelled bathrooms. Ship-wide Wi-Fi access has been installed and all cabins have iPads so guests can access daily schedules, onboard accounts and make restaurant reservations. There are many new dining options. New venues include Chops Grille, the signature steakhouse, the Asian Izumi restaurant, The Boardwalk Dog House hot-dog counter (capable of serving up to 1,000 hot-dogs a day), The Park Café deli-style restaurant, and a new à la carte menu in the Viking Crown Lounge. The pool deck has a new outdoor cinema. The indoor theatre has new stage technologies and 'spectacular shows' are performed in three languages. A new feature is the 'vertical entertainment' concept in the Centrum. Here aerialists perform jaw-dropping spectacles and up to 1,400 passengers can see the show. There are also two full-length, multi-deck LED displays. The Champagne Bar has been transformed into the fabulous new R Bar, a sophisticated 1960s vibe with signature cocktails. Other new spaces include the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery,

the Diamond Lounge for Crown and Anchor loyalty guests, and a Concierge Lounge for suite guests. Royal Caribbean has also introduced many modern features and new technologies to increase efficiency and minimise environmental impact. These include advanced water treatment, new bridge electronics, and to make the vessel run more fuel-efficiently, new external paint. All these new features increased the ship's weight so a 217-ton 'duck-tail' was added to the stern to increase stability. During 2012 Splendour of the Seas will homeport in Venice. ...LED displays for info...

‘WE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW YOU WERE HERE!’

That’s a phrase we’ve heard on a number of occasions since Cruise In have been appearing in the Andover Gazette. It’s probably because for eleven years we’ve been tucked away in the Business Centre on River Way. However, as a result of the Andover Gazette, it has been lovely to have met many local people over the past few months. We’re even more delighted to have been able to book some of you on - often a first - luxury cruise holiday. We’re not your typical walk-in, high street travel agency. We’re a true cruise consultancy, but our door is always open and we’ll always put the kettle on while we discuss your cruising options. Not only do we all cruise – lucky us – but we sell all Cruise Lines rated 4-Star and above. So if you don’t see your favourite line featured on our website or in our brochures and newsletters, it doesn’t mean we don’t sell it. We do! And probably at a better price than anyone else!

We all live in a rural area, but how many of us really know what goes into managing the fields around us and what farmers actually do on a day-to-day basis? I know I don’t, and having lived most of my adult life in cities, I am very curious to learn more about farming. So I took a trip to Saxley Farm, Red Rice, near Andover to talk to local farmer Matthew Read of the John Read Partnership, who manages five farms covering 3,110 acres of land between Andover and Salisbury, and we will be featuring a monthly interview with him on Inspired Community about life down on the farm.

By general standards, the Hampshire and Wiltshire-based farming operation Matthew runs is a big one. He grows three main crops: wheat, barley and oilseed rape. The wheat is used mostly in the West Country as animal feed and some is exported from Southampton, but it is also used for milling wheat by the likes of Premier Foods’ Rank Hovis in Andover. The barley is sent to Norfolk and converted into malt for beer and some whisky. And the oilseed rape is crushed for its oil and used for a range of things from industrial to cooking oil.

They used to grow linseed (with the pretty blue flowers) but have found that oilseed rape is easier to manage and grow, and provides a better return.

Each crop is grown on rotation, so in the first year a field will have oilseed rape, the second year they plant wheat, and in the third year it is rotated to barley, to ensure the soil doesn’t get too depleted of nutrients. The oilseed rape is their so-called ‘break crop’ as a non-straw part of the crop rotation, but they’ve also used beans and peas in past, as well as the linseed.

The Team on the Farm

Matthew spends his days overseeing the management and organisation of the farm, and has two full-time workers “who do everything including establishing the crop, cultivating,

Saxley Farm: How Local Farmer Matthew Read Manages His 3,100 Acres of Landby Angela Wilbraham

drilling, fertiliser spreading, and crop spraying. They are currently working from 7.30am until it gets dark, which is about 4pm right now. But they put in long hours when it gets busy.

“My job is to run the business of the farm and to make sure the farmers have all the kit they need to do their job. When we get really busy we bring in part time workers and I’ll get on a tractor myself,” says Matthew. Maintaining the farm is a costly business. There’s a current project to concrete an area where lorries turn, which is going to cost about £15,000. A new drill, costing £55,000, is about to arrive although it “should generate enormous savings of money and time as it’s a direct drill that will save us pre-cultivating the land”. And a new tractor has been ordered, to the tune of £90,000. All in all, the farm has four tractors, two combine harvesters and a selection of other equipment like sprayers and spreaders.

Managing the Uncertainty in Farming

The farm is profitable, but Matthew says it is “up and down, depending on the world price of wheat. We’ve seen it go from about £70/tonne up to £200/tonne. Right now the price, at around £140-150, is good. But there is a lot of uncertainty and costs have risen dramatically in the last few years. Australia has just had a record harvest and the weather is changeable. Last year was very dry and while we had a good harvest, not everyone did. “We can usually gauge this ahead of time and we sell our crops in advance. We are selling our 2012 & 2013 crop now.”

Usually they sell to merchants who trade futures on their crop on their behalf, but they have been considering managing their own futures account, dependent on finding the right broker.

They receive a Single Farm Payment subsidy as part of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) through Defra. “This is an important part of our income,” says Matthew. “Could we survive

Page 29: Andover Gazette

without it? Probably. We could change things that we do, but it wouldn’t be easy. And that’s why we jump through hoops to qualify.

Changing Practices for the Environment and CAP

“With the CAP being renegotiated now, there is a lot of uncertainty here too,” he says. “We are anticipating changes such as ‘greening the CAP’ and a financial cap on payments.” To that end, the farm has changed a number of its practices, such as reducing the number of passes across the land with machinery like ploughs to reduce its environmental impact. But Matthew disagrees with using the CAP to manipulate the market and control food production by bringing back theset aside policy, which is currently being discussed.

Matthew works with some manufacturers on (heavily regulated) trials at his farm of new crop varieties and fungicides. This provides the manufacturers with valuable data on the new products, but also helps them with marketing, and they often hold open days for other farmers to come along and see how the trials are going.

The Lay of the Land

The five farms, spread across 15 miles, that make up the John Read Partnership business include the original family-owned farm of Queen Manor at Boscombe Down, where his mum still lives. The farms at Newton Toney and Over Wallop which are run by Matthew on a contract basis, where his company is hired to do the management and farming work in coordination with the land owners. He is also the tenant farmer of both Parsonage Farm at Durrington and Saxley Farm in Red Rice, where his base is, including his family home with wife Jen, two children, the main office and grain store. Oh, and their very happy dog Dotty.

He is lucky enough to have a tenancy agreement for three generations of his family. “Having this kind of tenancy, which is not really available any more, gives us a very good level of security,” says Matthew. “We pay rent and that rent is reviewed every three years based on how well the farming business is going.” After

Matthew Read in his Oilseed Rape Farm in Red Rice, Hampshire

his father, Matthew is the second generational tenant here, but he’s yet to see if either of his two young children wants to follow in his footsteps.

With several generations of his family having farmed in the area, farming is in Matthew’s blood. At aged 17 he left school and took a trip to Australia, where he worked as a farmer. He then returned to the UK to go to the Royal Agricultural College. After graduating in 1989, he took over the running of Eastover Farm, Abbotts Ann, before then taking over the family business from his father.

Chairing the Crop Sector at Red Tractor

In his spare time, Matthew is a director of the Assured Food Standards organisation, which is a British organisation that promotes and regulates food quality, and licenses the Red Tractor quality mark. Matthew is a chairman of the Crops and Sugar Beet Scheme within the Red Tractor Assurance for Farms. “It’s a fascinating role as the red tractor scheme covers about £11 billion worth of food. And our crops and sugar beet group deals with a wide range of crops which we all consume on a daily basis.” With the 14 people on his board, they write the technical standards that farmers must follow in order to qualify. They have a marketing team who then identify producers, such as breakfast cereal manufacturers, or maltsters, or millers, who source farm assured products and who might want to license the red tractor logo for use on their products to show they comply.

I’ll be revisiting Matthew in February to kick-off a monthly series of blogs to explore just what our local farmers have to do each month so keep a look out for more soon.

If your child is aged between 6 and 16 and needs some help with core subjects like Maths and English, or simply needs some direct assistance with exams like SATS/Common Entrance/11+ /GCSE in those core areas, then help is now at hand via a new tuition centre opening in Andover. The centre is based at the Westmarch Business Centre, directly opposite the 24 hour Tesco Extra store, on the A343 Newbury Road.

The centre will be jointly run by two fully qualified teachers, Bas and Emma Brown, who have over 35 years teaching experience behind them in both the primary and secondary age groups. Bas has, for the last few years, been a headmaster of two schools, so brings a wealth of educational and business experience to this new venture. Bas and Emma have three children of their own, one at University, and two of primary school age; as parents and teachers, they are very aware of how important confidence and success at school is for our youngsters, who will be entering an increasingly competitive world over the next few years.

Kip McGrath is an Australian company who have been enjoying success with their unique tuition centres, bespoke individualised education programmes, and resources, for over twenty five years in more than twenty countries worldwide. There are currently over 200 Kip McGrath centres in the UK, with a record number of parents deciding to give their children that little bit of extra help. One child described it as;

“A cool way to add to school.”

All sessions will be based at the centre, away from the distractions of home or school. Children would be assessed by Bas or Emma for free and then, if help is needed, an individually tailored programme suitable to the child’s needs will be put together. The children attend for weekly sessions after school on an evening to suit families. The sessions are eighty minutes long, very pacey, and are divided into six learning sessions. These involve Kip McGrath resources and individualised help from a tutor, who would always be a fully qualified teacher. Each session can involve specific help for an upcoming exam, if appropriate. The groups are small, comprising of only four or five children, homework would be set and marked each week, and parents get regular feedback from the tutors.

The service is very affordable which is vitally important in the current economic climate. Sessions are priced at £28, which is the equivalent of £21 an hour, and slightly cheaper than traditional one to one tutoring. Discounts will be available for families booking a term

in advance and for any parents who successfully recommend the centre to another local family.

Often children can be distracted at school, so the Kip McGrath centre is deliberately set up to be a warm, friendly place, where children can succeed. They may well learn new areas of the curriculum, but often it is an opportunity to reinforce what they already know and apply it in a common sense way, in an appropriate educational environment. Many of the resources used involve interactive software which helps reinforce previous knowledge and offer a fun way to learn. Kip McGrath, as a company, have always been one of the leaders in the field of professional tutoring and the use of appropriate software. The Andover centre will benefit from the company’s rollout of its new INSIGHT programme in 2012, where much wider internet based resources will be used both for tutoring sessions and at home. Each session involves educational games related to the topic the child is studying; there is little point giving up extra time to learn unless the children have some fun!

Thousands of children have really benefited from this programme of unique private tuition over many years, both in terms of increased success in class, and also improvements in self confidence inside and outside school. That, in itself, is worth so much nowadays, and the long history of success should give parents the confidence to come along and try this new service for your children.

The Westmarch Business Centre is adjacent to several large superstores, so it is possible to do the weekly shop whilst your child, or children, learn. Call and speak to Bas or Emma Brown, who will be delighted to meet you and your child, and discuss how best Kip McGrath can help.

If you would like a Free Assessment for your child please call the centre, and speak to Bas or Emma. 01264 748 913.

I am often asked by clients how well I think they are doing and how I think other local businesses are performing.

I know times are still very tough for lots of businesses but actually local businesses still seem to be performing very well under the circumstances.

Some of my clients are telling me they are very busy and are even having to turn work away. I have asked them why they think this is and they say it comes down to a few main points:

1. They are doing a good job.

2. They are still investing in marketing as they see it as a vital part of their business.

3. There is still plenty of work out there, but they are having to find new ways of getting it.

4. Existing customers trust them which in

turn leads to recommendations to new

customers.

Many clients are still struggling to win work but

I think this gives them an opportunity to review

their costs and maybe decide to do things

differently. This could reduce their costs which

will in turn let them be more competitive on their

pricing.

Often customers assume that a slow computer means the end of the road for it and an expensive replacement is needed. This is not necessarily the case as there are a number of inexpensive techniques that can be used to speed up your computer to how it was when you bought it, utilising built-in software tools and upgrading the hardware.

These include:

• Windows tools – several tools, such as Disk Cleanup & Disk Defragmenter exist in the operating system to re organise how your computer utilises space on the hard drive, hence making interactions quicker.

• Virus checkers and software to remove other malicious bugs – make sure you have a virus checker which has regular updates and use it to scan your computer regularly; the easiest option is to schedule it to run the scan automatically. Even virus checkers can miss some other ‘bugs’, so use an anti-malware program to periodically scan your computer

Computer Too Slow? Time To Throw It Out? STOP!advises Peter Clarke from PC PAL

and really clean up the hard drive.

• If you don’t use it – remove it. Old programs that are no longer in use still take up valuable resource so removing the program (not just deleting the shortcut) can considerably improve your computer’s speed.

• If the computer is 4 or 5 years old it is highly likely to have insufficient memory to run modern day programs quickly enough. This is easily remedied, at little cost, by adding more memory to the system.

• Just like with your car, your computer can benefit from a regular service to identify and address all of these ongoing issues.

If you have questions regarding this or any other computer issue or you would like to book a service for your computer then contact PC PAL on 01264 931000, email [email protected] or visit www.pcpal.co.uk

I was privileged enough along with some colleges from local radio station ‘Andover Sound’ to become one of the ‘select few’ chosen in the UK to exclusively test drive the world’s first diesel hybrid car, The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, all thanks to Marshall’s of Newbury. At the special launch event on Wednesday 8th February, we were given the opportunity to drive the innovative new model, before its nationwide rollout.

The Peugeot HYbrid4 which was awarded Diesel Car Magazine’s ‘Best Eco Car of 2011’ five months before it went on sale is an eco-friendly model that sets a benchmark for low CO2 emissions. Peugeot have certainly given this new crossover the French style treatment. With head up displays for your speed and battery conditions which all slide away seamlessly into the dashboard when you switch off the car. Inside, the silent start up with the electric motor reveals that you are sitting in one of the most advanced hybrids in the world. The 3008’s interior is light and spacious, with a clever folding option for loading through to the front seats. The seats are comfortable and the interior is stylish and is finished off with a panoramic sun roof making it the perfect family car. The boot loses 100 litres

of space over the standard front-drive 3008, but retains its split tailgate and compartment under the floor. All in all, this is a surprisingly practical car.

Two Motors are better than one! (Fuel economy: 74.4mpg Combined) Under the bonnet is a 163bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine attached to a robotized manual six-speed transmission driving the front wheels. A hefty 8kW generator recharges the nickel-metal hydride battery, which lives in the back along with a 37bhp AC electric motor driving the rear wheels. This provides four-wheel drive, not that a 3008 will do much off roading, but I can see many drivers being attracted to the idea of 200bhp and fleet managers to the fiscal advantages of 99g/km emissions of CO2 with the all-weather capability of four-wheel drive.

Zoe Martin, dealer principal at Marshall’s commented: “The new 3008 HYbrid4 is a completely

new driving experience and it is fantastic that we can now share it with our customers.

“It is essentially four cars in one, with four different modes, which include auto, sport, full electric and four-wheel drive. This gives the 3008 HYbrid4 the driving capabilities of a performance car, fuel efficiency of a diesel and the handling of a four wheel drive but with the environmentally friendly credentials as well as the money saving aspects of an electric car.

“Drivers are now becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, but with the 3008 HYbrid4 you don’t have to compromise on style and performance to drive an eco-friendly car.”

Company Car Buyers please note: As a company car vehicle, the 3008 Hybrid4 hosts a series of strong benefits for drivers and employers. The benefits include 100% capital write down on the cost of the vehicle in the first year, if purchased outright. The vehicle also sits within the lowest ‘Benefit in Kind’ (BIK) threshold, resulting in savings on Personal Company Car Tax. On top of that the 3008 Hybrid4 is also exempt from the London congestion charge.

The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 range starts with a £26,600 model, with CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km and deliveries commence for the UK market now.

For more information or for details on any of the models in the Peugeot range, please contact Marshall’s on 01635-572-900 or visit the dealership at Newbury Motor Park, The Triangle, Newbury. Alternatively, visit www.marshalls4peugeot.co.uk
