Longwood Graduate Fellows, Wyck Staff and Volunteers after a Professional Outreach Project planting day.

As our gardens fall into a seasonal slumber, the Longwood Graduate Program continues to unfurl. It’s been a busy few

months under the leadership of Brian Trader, Interim Director and Marnie Conley, Co-Leader. With matriculation of a

new class of five Fellows, facilitation of the Professional Outreach Project, formalization of a new mentorship program,

and recruitment of incoming Fellows for next year, the Longwood Graduate Program is anything but dormant. We

thought you’d want to hear directly from the current Fellows on what’s happening with the Program:

The Professional Outreach Project

By Gary Shanks, Second Year, South Afr ica

The Professional Outreach Project for 2014 took place at Wyck Historic House, Garden, and Farm in Philadelphia,

where all 11 of us, First and Second Year Fellows, redesigned the perimeter beds of the historic rose garden. It started

with an RFP process in May and a project kick off with Wyck by July. Our work included complete installation of new

plants, as well as interpretation, labeling and accessioning of the Historic Rose Collection to enhance the visitor

experience at Wyck. The opportunity of seeing this project through, from conception to completion, and with the

partnership of Wyck and public garden collaborators, was a definitive highlight for the Fellows. The Fellows learned the

time. Working on the Professional Outreach Project lead to a sense of achievement and growth as a group, setting the

standard for their involvement in future projects, and ultimately, guiding their careers.

International Experience

By Andrea Brennan, First Year, Indiana

The First Year Fellows are excited to be traveling to Japan in January for their International Experience. For this trip,

the Fellows have been charged with a detailed exploration of a particular horticultural subject, bringing back a tangible

deliverable to illustrate how explorations or educational trips might work in a public garden setting. Knowing the

Chrysanthemum is an important part of Japanese culture and a core collection at Longwood Gardens as exemplified by

the annual Chrysanthemum Festival and their cultivation of the Thousand Bloom Mum, we are anxious to bring back

cultural knowledge to enhance both programming and their core collection. At the center of our research, we will be

exploring and documenting Japanese horticultural traditions and techniques not yet practiced at Longwood. Stay tuned

in to our blog in January for daily accounts of our trip!
